That's a musical keyboard, not the computer input device. This interesting use of the Kinect camera allows for one to place a musical keyboard pretty much anywhere at all.
Check out the video above and you'll see what I mean. When you think about it, this isn't anything too particularly special. Just an impressive demonstration of defining areas of interactivity within a 3D space. But it scores massive bonus points for making it easier to recreate that amazing piano scene in Big with actually having to find (and then possibly dispense with) a giant keyboard.
Now, if you want Gene Hackman, that's another matter entirely.

@The Young Scot: You're half-right. I'm aware that it was Robert Loggia and not Gene Hackman in Big. It's a thing which is true. Yet my mind refuses to accept it for some reason and any recreation I perform would have Hackman.
Afterwards, he would concoct a grand scheme against Superman.

all fanboy wars aside, Kinect is groundbreaking technology, not only in its gaming applications, but in its real world applications as well. what can Move offer to the real world, aside from being usable as a glowing space dildo?
Where the Kinect stands now kind of reminds me of the iPhone pre-AppStore; pretty craptastic as it's intended but it shines like gold when it comes to hacks.
What Kinect offers is potential. Games are not just hardcore shooters and RPGs and adventure games. A video game's definition is literally any game which can be played using electronics which connect to a video display.
Now, you could argue that Kinect offers nothing to the people who only enjoy Halo, Gears, and other "hardcore" games. However, it is exciting new technology, and the amount of amazing homebrew software being developed for it proves it. I'd bet dollars to donuts that outside of the shovelware we're going to get for the Kinect (and shovelware happens to any new technology), we're also going to see new games which simply can't be done on Move or Wii.
So what does Kinect have to offer gaming? Plenty, it looks like. What does it have to offer you? Nothing, since you've written it off already. Have fun being a "hardcore" gamer, dude. I can have fun flailing my arms and legs around like a jackass, and I'm certain games are going to come along which reward me for doing precisely that.
If I could play out that scene from Big on an imaginary piano with my imaginary pet tiger from Kinectimals playing the second part I might buy a new litterbox bundled with Kinect. Who doesn't want a pet tiger that plays piano???
Jayson has a point. The kinect does little that the wii hasn't already done. But I have faith it will be taken advantage of and we will see some mature and interesting titles.
Not trolling here but... Kinect is an awesome piece of tech, with the ability to elicit the wow factor from anyone with half a brain. But at the moment, it's a solution looking for a problem. In that respect I compare it more to MS Surface computing than anything else in the gaming world.
I hate MS but I will buy one of these - for my Linux PC when the hacking community have matured some of their projects to a usable state. But I just don't see a use for it without a controller for most games...
Haters: nobody thought a game like Infinity Blade was possible on an iDevice when it first launched. Granted, it's received a few tech upgrades since, but it's the same basic hardware. Just sayin'.
some of these comments get more immature as time goes on. cool hack, ive been checking them out as they show up on posts and i would love to have a hacked kinect. i readit wasnt that hard to do, just some driver manipulation or some shit? either way, HERP DERP to the type of people that go 'oh this is gay and boring and im gonna find a reason to pick it apart cause i have the safety internet on my side"
yeah that, quit fucking doling that. joke, laugh, live longer, fuck yeah @bakewell and your rainbow spewing wisdom.
Hah @the people talking smack to fanboys, you are just as worse. Let the man have his opinion. @ mrshiswatwista so far for the games been implemented the move looks good for just about almost every game. "Fanboy" aside my ass hah.
If you rebut someone's anti-Kinect fanboyism by talking about Sony and putting the word "accomplishments" in quotes, or asking yourself why you even bought a Move in the first place, you're subtly doing the same thing, but on the opposite end. Just saying.
As far as the video goes, again, a good hack. I think maybe Microsoft should get ahold of some of these people so we can get something good in the gaming department.
they need to make an open source kinect pc app to show you how to do the kamasutra.
female is pink, male is blue. line up your bodies to the image on the screen using the kinect.
Obviously the technology is good. No one can deny it. Technology has slowly been coming to this touchscreen interface world for a while now.
Look of the Sixth Sense technology that has being developed. Amazing stuff with hand gestures and projections.
The only issue is the one that many have brought up. Interesting results, but none of it is for gaming and probably never will be. Nothing wrong with digital puppet shows. Nothing wrong with a digital piano. It's just not going to do what MS claims it will do for games. The real application will be for other entertainment purposes and PCs.
@ MrSwishaTwista
Since when did gaming tech have to do more than be good for gaming? Great for Kinect that it's tech has other applications. Right now, those appear to be pretty much they only worthwhile applications we're going to get barring maybe 1-2 titles if we're lucky. Hope I'm wrong, but I'm doubting it.
There's a reason why the Eyetoy failed on it's own. Kinect is only a more robust one with some new things slipped in. But overall it has changed little of the underlying concept and that's where the limitations do exist.

Dude i feel really sorry for you! Must suck donkey balls to be allready that smug and spoilt, only getting a new kick with better graphic engines. U r no real gamer thats a fact! For example Pac Man makes use of one stick, four directions. I would def say its a hardcore game.
Trolling? Hardly. I'll listen to the company that was working on the motion tech before the others.
And how has Kinect proven SONY wrong? All MS has done is a terrific hype campaign targeted to the dumbest generation of American consumers. They have one game of note and that's Dance Central.
I'll be far more interested in seeing the sales on future games. Mark my words on this: Kinects worldwide will be collecting dust in the not to distant future.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
also, unless I'm missing the reference, Gene Hackman wasn't in BIG. I think you're thinking of Robert Loggia.
Unless I missed the reference, in which case, ignore me.
Fixed that for you jayson.

Siegfried and Roy?
Oh man I could take over for those guys in Vegas!! LittleBigD and Skittles Live!!!! We'll do a Liberace tribute!!

Honestly, please read this article:
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-11-27-sony-why-we-turned-down-kinect-interview?page=1
What sony said was "we tried, and we thought it sucks."
What Microsoft did was "we bought companies where bunch of people who don't agree with Sony assumption."
End result: Sony keeps spewing Kinect is shit and Micosoft says absolutely nothing.
Do you troll much?
