We aren’t surprised that Activision and Infinity Ward had a strong showing in the month of November with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The prime reason being that we’re aware that a lot people seem to dig the IP. The other reason, of course, is that most studios and publishers steered clear of the launch. Hell, even my mother put off her neck surgery for fear of competition. But some games did come out, and some even sold well considering, at least according to the latest NPD numbers.
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 -- Xbox 360 -- 4.20M
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 -- PS3 -- 1.9M
- New Super Mario Bros. Wii -- Wii -- 1.4M
- Assassin's Creed II -- Xbox 360 -- 795K
- Left 4 Dead 2 -- Xbox 360 -- 720K
- Wii Sports Resort -- Wii -- 720K
- Wii Fit Plus -- Wii -- 679K
- Assassin’s Creed II -- PS3 -- 448K
- Dragon Age: Origins -- Xbox 360 -- 362K
- Mario Kart (w/wheel) -- Wii -- 315K
While nowhere near 4.20M units moved, it's nice to know that Mario can still hang with the newer big boys. On a dissimilar note, it's a bit of a shock to see that another FPS, L4D2, was able to roll during the MW craze. Mad props.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I do have Demons Souls though, so I'll be set for a long, long time.
I actually played the start of AC2 yesterday, drowning italians is fun.
I don't think PC-sales stats can really be done at this point; Steam would not be taken into account and is too big of a factor.
What you should be asking is why do third party companies make PS3 exclusives in america. There are more gamers on the XBOX.
Yep Activision is "disappointed" [sic] that they sold 1.9 MILLION copies. Some games can wish they would do that in their first month. If you would not want to sell 1.9 Million of a game, your stupid.
I might not be a PS3 fan, but some people must be called stupid.
I know on VGCharts, the PS3 version of Modern Warfare was sitting pretty at around 3.7 million during november while the 360 version was at around 5.3 (give or take).
Regardless, anyone who commented saying that it was a mistake going multiplatform for the game is an idiot. Even at a little less than half, (OF FOUR MILLION!!!) I'm sure Activision made more then enough to recoup the development costs of the PS3 version (mind you it's a port with some fine tuning).
