November hardware NPD: Nintendo wins photo

All the platform publishers touted some big sales during November, particularly over the Black Friday thing people get so excited about. Turns out the talk wasn’t just trash -- the latest hardware sales numbers are down YRY, but the publishers as a whole still moved a wicked amount of units during the month according to the latest NPD numbers.

The Nintendo DS took the crown, selling 1.70M units for whatever reason. Nintendo also nabbed the second highest sales of the month with 1.26M Wii units sold. The Xbox 360 and PS3 lagged behind, selling 819.5K and 710.4K respectively while wishing it were the DS, the PSP moved around 293.9K units.

And if that’s not enough numbers for your eye holes, check this: the PS2 sold big again to the tune of 203.1K. Who doesn't own this thing yet?

I guess the daddies are buying current generation consoles for themselves and the PS2 as a "toy" for their children.

I heard a lot of those PS2 are going to kids indeed since their parents walk into a gamestore, see the machine that costs next to nothing, and then see a cabinet of secondhand games for it that is 4/5 times larger then any other cabinet in the store...

There is a HUUUUUUUUUGE load of absolutely great games available allready, where-as the PS3 only has LBP and R&C for kids... Plus its more interesting for gamestores as well since they make more profit on secondhand games then on new ones :-)

You know what? Sony should slim down the PS2 even further, put an LCD screen on top of it and sell it as a PS2 Portable. A great game library, DVD-playing capability, I'd buy one over a PSP for sure.

Oh, it would feature 2 analog sticks, of course.

You asked who doesn't have a PS2 yet, but I think you mean "Who doesn't own some version of the DS yet?" I mean seriously, with the consistent high number of DSs sold, you would think everyone would have it already.

If your parents haven't got you a DS yet, they don't love you.
If you don't live with your parents, then you must be poor....or you just don't like handhelds.

Handhelds hurt my feeble hands. It's why I stopped playing my PSP, and I have my iPhone. No DS for me.

I don't have a PS2 either. :( If I'm lucky I'll have one by Xmas. There's a ton I want to play for it.

I would just get a PS3, but yeah... no BC.

Yeah I still don't have a ps2 but over the years and over the roommates I've been very close to three of them.

The DS's sales numbers don't make any sense. I'm going to wikipedia, brb. Ok so 115M DSs have been sold, if you include this novemeber. About 140M PS2s. Which is more? Only time will tell.

I guess the PS2 is being bought by third world country importers mainly. Here in Brazil it still sells like hotcakes, given the ease of piracy.

Or it could be the economy sucks and people can still find satisfying gaming experiences on DS and PS2. Just a thought, its not a real headscratcher.

PS3, even at $300, forces an upgrade some people still aren't willing to make (HDTV) because they see the frivolous purchase for what it is. Oh and game games start at $60 bucks. And no backward compatibility to PS2. PS3, not matter how you slice it, is no PS2, but would be helped greatly if it was.

360s continue to sell because, well, 360s are made to break.

The reason being its a good system, with a crap ton of good game. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out. Wow look at the poor PSP, that's just pathetic!

Technically if I wanted it I could say I owned a PS2, but since I sold/burnt/ate all my titles for it [regretted] there would not be much point.

It's been a while since we had a strong Wii showing at the Fanboy Friday.

I have to say, I'm totally shocked that the 360 out outsold the PS3. Like stunned. With the PS3 price drop and the MASSIVE advertising campaign, I thought for sure the PS3 would beat out the 360 this holiday, but so far no dice. Even all the analysts were predicting that it would be all PS3 this holiday. I even saw it in the local newspaper. Weird.

I mean, if you were buying an HD system this holiday and you didn't already have one, and you had to pick between either the PS3 or the 360, you'd be insane to pick the 360. The PS3 gives you way better bang for your buck. And this is coming from someone who only has a 360.

I really don't understand how the PS2 can still be selling, but how in the hell did Nintendo win this month? How can a system sell 4 million copies of one game and yet not even break 1 million consoles sold?

"How can a system sell 4 million copies of one game and yet not even break 1 million consoles sold?"

Because they're mostly just selling to their already existing user base. Not everyone likes FPS's, so that why you never really see that big of a boost in sales, when a big AAA shooter comes out. Just take a look at the Halo games, and GTA 4 as examples. In the months that those games release, the hardware sales only went up slightly!

The 360 sold so well because the some of the Elite bundles that are around are ridiculously good value for money. Asda in the UK were selling an Elite plus 5 bestselling games of 2009 for 189 quid! Compared with a PS3 bundle with 2 topselling games for 249. It's a no-brainer, really. Politics doesn't even come into it for most people.

Having said that, PS3 sales are certainly nothing to be ashamed of. There are going to be a lot of happy gamers this Chrimbo.

PS2 still gets ports of most of the Guitar Hero titles as well as licensed ports. Money-maker

I think people are beginning to buy more PS2 so they could play on a different one every day of the week.
