also, those that abuse trust are dicks and they live in their own personal hell's anyway. so even tho they steal a game, don't think that doesn't start to leave marks on their already fractured souls.
i imagine people who keep repeating that process become much like gollum.
You have to look at the big picture. If someone pirates content, they are obviously interested in it. People generally don't steal things they don't want. The battle lies in convincing them to pay for it. It may be a very small percentage, but it's still money.
Which he probably did the same thing, took since he couldn't afford than bought later.
Notch knows.
please don't be one of those people. the numbers for and against the pirating issue are flimsy and extremely suggestive at best. an attempted download does not equal an actual pirated copy for example.
by citing both skyrim (wildly successful and selling very well) and the witcher 2 (ehhh, didn't sell so well) and saying that piracy is somehow effected either (wait, so if everyone in three continents pirated skyrim, why did they have such huge sales numbers still?), you have pretty much invalidated your own argument.
(I mean, he's right of course)
If you have $150 to spend and you go buy 3 games, you probably "can't afford" a fourth, but you *could have*.
My point? This is gonna be used by countless dipshits who ignore/don't understand the real meaning of "can't afford" to justify blatantly not supporting the developers of games they like.
He's having his cake and eating it too, and I can't blame him for it.
I could see a lot of people abusing this sort of developer trust. Unless a game is released it just seems unlikely that a lot of people who already own a game would buy it; especially when it's from a less well-known developers than Notch. Eh, maybe I'm just cynical.
minecraft.net
you're welcome.
@matt welch
what you have just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this thread is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
@rammstein
baZING! *followed by a quick groin jab*
Jim Sterling: "One has to respect that, whatever one's view of piracy. Class act, that Notch."
What in the incoherent fuck are you talking about?
Ouch! I wouldn't want to be Minecraft right about now! Zing! Hehehehe! Good one! Burn! Oh snap!
@nfm1337: ty ;)
But seriously though, I bought Minecraft back when it was Buy 1 Get 1 Free and it turns out you need a specific IP address to play with others? Defeating the purpose of playing it with my roommate and thus my $21 were wasted.
Also, you have to build everything yourself. That's just lazy programming right there. But then I was never into Lego, which minecraft is a wholesale ripoff of.
To the white knights still saying the guy won't buy the game because pirating is evil: he WANTS to buy the game, you thickheaded clods. That's how the exchange began in the first place.
Here's the thing. PAY ATTENTION. ITS PRETTY SIMPLE.
Some people will pirate no matter what. It's an unfortunate reality that you cannot change. Not with good will, and not with DRM. Pirates gonna pirate. These people are not potential customers. this is not the kind of person notch is speaking to. It's not the kind of person Valve is successful with. It's not the kind of person Louis CK had success with. Yet it's the kind of person companies like Ubisoft, EA, and Sony constantly try to hopelessly fight while harming the bystanders - many of whom result to piracy as a result of worsening service.
Well if you say YES to any of this, your all law breakers and thieves.
He can say what the hell he wants as clearly potential losses aren't an issue for him anymore, it smacks of arrogance.
Same situation with Valve, they are sitting on the best and most popular DRM service out there, why should they care about piracy when it's not a problem for them?
Other developers aren't quite so lucky, and saying crap like this is just selfish.
@amtalx
When I have a passing interest in a game, I'll buy it new EVENTUALLY and by the time I do the price will probably have dropped. Maybe pirates should try to do the same?
What gives them the right to play NOW and pay LATER? Nothing.
You overestimate the kindness of pirates, they'll get something without paying for it simply because they can. They won't feel bad about it either.
@Sexualchocolate
So what you're saying is now you're less of a scumbag? Good on you.
You still didn't pay for all of those PS2 games though did you?
Notch is just doing PR here. Of course he wants money for the quality product he and his team have made and he SHOULD be compensated. He just doesn't want to stoke the flames of the retarded Internet so he gives some middling, warm-fuzzies statement.
Fuck you. Save your money like a fucking big boy. Or fuck, turn tricks if you need games that badly.
So, they were technically going to pirate anyway.
I like Notch, I just hope he doesnt turn into an arrogant douchebag like those guys who made Angry Birds.
i pirated minecraft to see if i liked it. i did, and i paid for it during the alpha stage. everyone is happy. except you.
when i see people like you throwing insults and going bananas over piracy i just think you must be jealous or something. like those uptight religious types that really want to have sex but deny it to themselves and call people whores and sinners when they see them enjoying their carefree lives.
i find it funny you call out valve as being selfish when so many small games do really well using their service, and this is a comment on a story about a game funded by fans before it was even finished. obviously there is scope for anyone to succeed in this industry, and personally i have no sympathy for those that use piracy as an excuse for failure cause by their poor product and/or marketing, luck has nothing to do with it. the key is to understand your audience. some devs do, and some don't.
what notch has said cannot possibly be abused since it has no real world power, it is merely his opinion.
it's not like a magical door has been opened with light shining through it suddenly making pirating more fun and interactive.
essentially what Notch has said is "i am not giving you a copy so that you can get the game for free legally" or phrased another way "if you want to get it without paying then you can make yourself a criminal to do so, I'm not going to enable you".
it's very applaud-able since he is forcing the gamer to take responsibility for their choices, instead of being 'the man'.
Yeah it is a shame I didn't enjoy Minecraft, luckily I have so much more and better to play.
I never said Valve were selfish, I said that such STATEMENTS are selfish because they hardly any developers are in such a cushy position to be that ridiculously casual with piracy.
Jealous? My backlog is far too big for that. I still have quests in Xenoblade and Skyrim to do, too many games man.
I don't like piracy simply because it's a pathetic, inexcusable act and developers deserve better, so I'm gonna bitch about it whether you like it or not thanks.
You aren't bothered by the fact that Machinarium and World of Goo got 90% piracy rates? Both of them being acclaimed and cheap indie games? It's all their fault is it?
Classy.
@jorbams
Great comment.
