Not happening: A fix for Mass Effect 2 tiny text issue photo

If you can't read the text in Mass Effect 2, buy a new TV. In a recent message board post about the problematic tiny text issue affecting SDTV owners, BioWare revealed that it can't patch the problem. "We understand that on some (SDTVs) the smallest text in Mass Effect 2 can be difficult to read," project manager Michael Gamble told readers. "While this was not an intentional result, it was a byproduct of the enhancements to the user interface."

"After investigating potential solutions, we have determined that while this issue does affect a small portion of SDTV owners, we are unable to resolve it for Mass Effect 2 through a title update."

If its any comfort, Gamble said that the developer will look into this issue with future Mass Effect games. But hopefully by 2012 you'll have already bagged that 56" flying plasma HDTV you've always wanted.

What the he'll is wrong with game designers. Did they not stop to think that not everyone has 20/20 vision and high def. Oh well, I wouldn't want to read the games convoluted and pointless plot anyway.

It's 2010 people. Flat panel TV's are on pallets at Walmart. If you can afford a 60 dollar game for your hobby, you can save 300 for a decent TV. If you can't, you sure as hell shouldn't buying full-price retail games. Suck it up and deal with it.

No one puts in an option for this issue (which is a major playability issue that has ruined a lot of games), and yet you could still choose to have your game's audio delivered in mono until...hell, there are probably new games that give you that option. And I have *never* even seen a mono TV.

I...I don't understand it. I know it might cause the occasional spacing issue, but...this seems like a major bug, if it has made me return games immediately because the text is unintelligible (see: Rising, Dead).

I have a 32in Vizio 1080p and the text looks just fine.

Don't understand why some TV's have the problem and some don't. I understand why SD sets do, since the resolution isn't native to the display, but all HD sets should, in theory, display it fine.

So if you have 500 bucks for a new TV, a Vizio 32in 1080p set might be your answer, apparently.

I have a large TV, but that still doesn't mean it's fair to people with smaller TV's. This is an issue that BioWare can fix with a simple patch and they're cheating their customers by refusing to make it happen.

@Methos - You know Walmart is bad for your health, right? So is assuming people can save money to by luxury items like an HDTV compared to a $60 game (or a free game if you use game trading sites like Goozex). Some people have kids, and mortgages, and bills and things that are a little higher in priority. That being said, I do love my 52" LCD Sony Grand Wega. It is 2010 after all.

I played ME1 on a big, standard def TV, and it was a big problem any time there was text without voiceover, which was thankfully rare. Games like Lost Odyssey, featuring lots of menus with tiny text, were absolutely unplayable.

Honestly, I have trouble with some games on my new 37" HDTV.

I'll never understand why most developers haven't had the foresight/programming skill to design around this, at least during this transitional generation.

Also, I wholeheartedly second the scorn leveled at Methos.

This is probably the most contradictory statement a developer could make. As a designer, it's your responsibility to account for the usability of your game and test for such scenarios. If they'd done any degree of meaningful research, they'd realize that they had a portion of their audience (most likely not negligible, but only real design research would reveal this) who would have a degraded experience due to this oversight - or, as the developer puts it "interface enhancements."

Nobody, in my book, gets a pass for ruining the experience of a primary audience because of their lack of empathy, understanding of their users, or failure to do the right research and implement those findings.

Of course, I do this for a living, so it gets me especially worked up when designers flat out ignore their audience or refuse to do well by them.

It's not just those with SDTV's... I wear bifocals and don't have the best of vision and even with Dragon Age: Origins on a 32" LCD screen I often had to get up closer to read the text. With all the tech out there nowadays it would be nice if they allowed for scalable text in video games. It doesn't seem like this would be rocket science.

It's 2010 yet developers are still lazy for stuff like this? FEAR (on PC that I know) had the option to increase or decrease text (and your HUD!). Seriously game developers, put some effort; you'd think you guys would have resolved this after Dead Rising...but alas, you can say this just a really cheap way of FORCING users to get a HDTV.

I think your selling yourself short(Im contradicting myself I know) by not playing current gen games on an HDTV.

On the flip side it should be a no brainer that some people will be playing your game on a SDTV and its bullshit they didnt know it. Even then on my 42" HD Samsung LCD the text is fucking small, I think its one of the best games Ive played in the last few years but they really screwed a couple of things up... But thats just Bioware being Bioware.

There is NO developer error you idiots. Too small on your crappy TV, get a new TV or a new damn hobby. Just cause the 360 CAN be hooked up to an old television, doesn't mean it should. Like others have said, the games are SIXTY dollars. If you can't afford current-gen gaming, go with a Wii or even better, a PS2.
People looooove to blame the big bad moneymakers. Text size is absolutely fine on HD btw, and I have bad eyes. A.Get a real TV or B.Get Glasses or C.SHUT UP

If you don't have an HDTV by this time, I feel bad for you. More and more games are being optimized for HD and I don't think developers care if a few people still haven't upgraded. It took me a while, too, but it was damn well worth it.

What they really need to fix is the fucking magnetic field around the biotic that puts up the shield in the last mission that makes it so if you get within 4 feet of her (for me it was Miranda) you jitter around them and can't aim. That shit sucks! I still got past it.

As for the small text I could read it but barely (32 inch SDTV). It made the codex useless and the email a cunt but still I managed. I mostly didn't read anything except the conversation options where the font color was more problematic the the text size. I wish Microsoft would make it mandatory for the text to be readable on an SDTV.

The text is too small at times for more people than it should be and to me, that's an issue. Maybe Mass Effect 3 will fix this. It's a shame too cause I dont read a lot of the flavor text that I would normally read.

I bought a 22' crt for $5.00 at the salvation army. $40.00 VGA cables for the 360, and some pc speakers I already had.

HD setup for under 50 bones.

I'm not saying Bioware is right, just trying to offer an alternative to spending hundreds of dollars.

I didn't have as much of a problem with the text being tiny as it did with it color clashing with the background it was on. I remember quite a few conversations(talking with mordin is one that definitely came to mind) where i couldn't read what some of the dialogue options were because of the color background they were on. Not sure if that is a problem or not on HDTVs. And yes i can spend $60 on a new game, but no that does not mean i can lay down $300 for an HDTV, I have other expense that take priority.

You can easily get a nice LCD monitor for roughly twice the price of a new game. 'Problem' solved. If your bottleneck is your setup, maybe you should wait another 2 weeks or so on a $60 game and prevent the "It's my fault, but I wanna bitch" issue. Love the personal attacks, nice community! /expected

If they're getting mad and pretentious over something as trivial as a TV, I would not want to meet these rich people in real life. I won't deny it, HDTV's are actually pretty cheap (relatively) these days, but that doesn't mean everyone can afford it.

Besides, by adding an option to make the text larger, it's not like it would be hurting your experience of the game would it? People saying such an idea is stupid have simply never had to work with substandard equipment. This is coming from someone with a 42" HDTV now, but had to use a 20" LCD for a really long time.

I own a big HDTV, but I can't be using it all the time, in fact I rarely use it becaue others in the house need it.

So Lysergio, fuck you. I own a HDTV and I'm still affected.
So you have the thousands to spare on a new TV, good for you but blaming others for not have a large income is just stupid.

Baybe they would ranter buy ten games over a long period of time rather than one TV with no new games to play it on.

Don't impose your life on others. The game functions for you, why stop it also functioning for others?

To all those "buy another TV" people. Its about options and knowing your consumers. This was a stupid oversight. Some people can afford a new game every now and then, but not be able buy a new HD.

I could only afford 3 games last year because of my economic situation. Luckily things are better now, and I could afford to get a new TV.

And Lysergio, you are a hypocritical dick.

Or instead of forcing me to buy a new TV maybe they could put themselves through the painful agony of a larger font option.

Sorry but not everyone can/is going to buy a new tv sothey can see the fucking font on a video game. If your poor little feelings are hurt then maybe you shouldn't be such a prick. I have no sympathy for someone who's telling the rest of us to "Get a tv or shut up." If you're expecting me to just buy that and not be even slighty peeved you're even more detached from reality than I thought.

And I'll reiterate I don't care how much a new HD tv is. That's no excuse at all. Unless the devs are packaging their shit with the tv I apparently need then as the customer I'm expecting it to work fine on my tv.

I'm happy for you and your position. Congratulations. But the fact remains that the lack of an option is bullshit. Just as bullshit as the lack of dedicated servers in PC games.
