Not all NGP models will support 3G photo

Sony has clarified that its upcoming portable, codenamed "Next Generation Portable," will come in more than one flavor.

That 3G support it mentioned won't be featured in every NGP model. According to Sony Europe's Andrew House, only one model will feature the 3G capability, and the service will (obviously) cost extra. All units, however, will ship with Wi-Fi support, explains House.

"So the user gets a choice," he tells Eurogamer. "Wi-Fi is available wherever, which clearly is the most important aspect of connectivity and that connected experience; 3G will be a subset of that."

Interesting, but not really surprising: similar devices, like Apple's iPad and Amazon's Kindle, offer similar options. It's unclear who will be providing the 3G service for the NGP, or how much extra the functionality will cost.

The difference is that with Kindles and nooks, the 3G service is free. You just pay a premium for that model.

Living in a rural area, I'm probably going to have to bite the bullet and get the 3G version.

Interesting, could be intriguing who decides to pick up the 3G for Pay Monthly...

That makes perfect sense, no 3G model for me. Maybe we can expect the lesser to be the same as Apples products and cost $100 less than with the 3G option.

I just hate how expensive the wholr 3G thing is in Canada. The ipad 3G would cost me an extre $15 a month (for 250mb which is itty bitty) or $35 more for 5gb, what a rip off.

I wonder if you'll have to pay a monthly service fee for 3g on top paying more for the 3G capable NGP. I know e-readers don't require a monthly charge but there is a big difference between the file size of a book and the file size of a near PS3 quality downloadable game.

Nope, no 3G for me. I still refuse to get a data plan on my phone, even.

Now that the SKU is different, I think I understand the model.

You're paying a premium for 3G, and that's like your "$5 a month for however long they support it."

Somehow though, if I'm paying more for a SKU with a 56K connection, AND I have to pay a monthly fee however, fuck that.

Depends on the cost and payment options. A dataplan for a portable system is not something I'll pay, Sony. Not when I have to pay for the games, too.

Who gives a flip about 3G, besides the car (which will have converted WiFi in the future, IMO) everyplace that we go anymore has WiFi, local McDonalds does, skate park where my kid goes, Home Depot, etc...

Smart move to make the barrier for entry as low as possible.

Why saddle someone with paying for 3g tech they won't use if they only play at home?

It's nice to have options.

Good move Sony!

@phi39582 exactly! I recently turned down my iPhone data plan to 200mb a month, turned on wifi, and have been monitoring how much data i use over 3G. And do far in almost a month, it's been 40mb. I get wifi at home, and at work, so I only really use the 3G network if I am waiting at dunkin donuts or something. The only other times I would want to use 3G is 1) in the car or 2) on the train. But if I am in the car, I am usually driving, if when I am on the train we go under ground so I lose 3G anyway haha. I have a wifi only iPad and it's perfectly fine.

wifi for me!

Ooh, I can skip the 3G model and tether the thing to my phone when I need 3G.

... then download Skype for the NGP and trade my phone for a PlayStation Phone, and make speaking exclusively in "Yo, Dawg" memes.

Now about real backward compatibility.

How many 3G devices do people really want to pay for? It's already annoying enough for me to pay that $30 for data on my phone.

I don't even know what 3G is. All's I can understand from this comment thread is it has something to do with a monthly fee, and if that's the case, I don't care what it does but I'm not buying. Hell, my phone is still on pay-as-you-go 'cause I barely need to use it; can't be that big a loss for me.

If there's more than 2 models, they're doing it wrong. All there needs to be is "3G version" and "non-3G version".

All this really confirms is that there will be at least two models of the device. Smart move on Sony's end since it allows them to knock down the price of the Wi-Fi version... presumably.

3g means 3rd generation network, and is how cell phone companies designate wireless data plans.

it's usefulness on the psp is somewhat low as 4g phones with wireless tethering are currently available, and are bound to be widely available when the "ngp" ships.

if they offer a true unlimited 3g plan at an affordable price, and it has skype and/or google voice support, that could be interesting. i don't see myself or too many others trying to use this as a primary communication device though.

It begins.

Personally, I find 3G to be more reliable and consistent that 75% of wi-fi signals I get on any given day.

3G please. I'll pay the premium and play it safe. I've been the guy at a friends house downloading something on wi-fi just to find out his router can't take all the information, overloads, and I'm SOL. Once and never again.

Obviously it depends upon the specifics, but I'm glad that I'll be able to pay cheaper to get the wi-fi model since more likely than not I won't be using the 3G

This is stupid. Unless they have big plans for 3G (now they have two models they pretty much can't though) they should've just left it out. Everything about this device is cutting edge except 3G anyway, it'll age far faster than the rest of the hardware. I know customers have become accustomed to 3G and WiFi only devices, makes me think some market research shows you can sell more when presenting a few options as with many Apple products.

With the upcoming Wireless Hotspot function on the iPhone, I can just connect the NGP to my phone via WiFi and use its 3G connection.

So the WiFi model will probably cost $299.99 USD, and the 3G model will cost $349.99 USD. Makes the 3DS look cheap, now doesn't i?. I can't wait for Kaz to announce the price at E3, just to see the Sony fanboys jaws hit the floor. It will be E3 2006 all over again. LOL!

PSN+ members should get the 3G plan included. Would be a huge incentive to fork out the cash for that service.

@PEICanada7: No it does not, $249 is still expensive for a nintendo handheld. I'm not saying it's not worth $249 just that it's a bit on the expensive side.
And I think the "psp2" is gonna be atleast $349 for the regular model maybe $399 for the 3g version.

People like peicanada7 amuse me. They will drop $300 dollars on a 64gb iPod touch and not bat an eyelash. Yet they complain about price when something with better tech (3DS, NGP) is cheaper, or around the same price point.

Your comments lately make me ashamed to be on the same island as you. You sound like the local Microplay clerks.

well the days of PSN being a free service are coming to an end... if the 3g comes with a paid subscription it wouldn't be a bad deal.

LIke others have said though it really doesn't matter if you already own a smartphone. I can just wifi tether and be fine... of course now I'm mercilessly draining the battery of TWO devices haha.
