And since they are apparently losing money with each 3DS sale now, it makes sense they want us to buy DSi XLs to compensate.

Think of it this way: Sony made more money off PS2s the first 2 years the PS3 was out, then from actual PS3s.

Shouldn't we tell Sony the same thing. Didn't the PS2 outsell the Xbox in Japan last month? Granted the PS2 is $99 but they're still selling a console from 10+ years ago.

Well my friend said she asked her 10 year old son if he wanted a 3ds and he said "no, I want a DSi XL, I don't like the 3d." But you can turn it off and it can play the same games. "Nope. I want a DSi XL, the screen is bigger too."

So I guess there's that.

I don't think it's weird; by that logic they should've stopped selling regular DS in favour of the DSi (and Sony the PS2), but why do that when people would love to have ALL THREE? I for one have a DS and a 3DS and still would love to have an XL.

This makes perfect sense. New color to go with new kirby. In addition the ds has an amazing library of games. Why would some1 purchase a 3ds with no games?

I don't see what the issue is the DS has more widespread appeal than the 3DS so this isn't directly targeted towards us, since it's pink I'd wager that it's being targeted towards the female demographic that never picked up a DS and isn't compeled to get a 3DS. The PSP just came out with a new value pack remodel (which was a good decision in my opionin), this is just a new color. I don't get it people we're getting upset with Nintendo for abandoning their old consoles for new ones, but them showing DS support is a bad thing? Note everyone is ready to moved on to a new console, I bought my PS1 after the PS2 was released and I loved that console to pieces.

The DS is still selling well I'd be foolish for them to abandon it completely. Sony released a silver PS2 a month after the PS3 came out, then a white PS2 a year later, most people were either happy or they didn't care because they already moved on. It seems like no matter what Nintendo does everybody hates them for it, it's just a new color they've been doing that for a really long time, they also released a new flare red 3DS today so it's not like 3DS owners are getting left out of new color choices.

Is always good to read a level-headed comment. Seriously I don't get the reaction of many people here, they just announced a new color for a DS model, I don't see any issue here. This is obviously target to the people who doesn't have any DS model and that is not interested on the 3DS. Is true that nintendo have made many strange movements lately, but still is dumb to overreact to everything that they do, even with simple things like a new color.

typos, I just woke up. My point is the DSiXL was made with the elderly and chidlren in mind (not saying adults and teenagers can't enjoy it as well). The 3DS is made for the "veteran" gamer, and like I said earlier since it's pink it's being targeted towards girls. People are still buying DSiXLs even though the 3DS is backwards compatible, theirs a reason people still want DSiXLs Nintendo might as well capitalize on it.

Add to that that the DS, and portable gaming in general, is a "one for each user" platform, where multiple people in the same household would have their own system.

Is it so difficult to visualize how mom and dad could want to buy little Jenny her own DSi XL so she can share her brother Tim's games, rather than buying her a 3DS and create undue friction between the siblings?

Remember when Holmes said the Nintendo execs lost it? Well I think he was right.

Thanks, it's always nice to hear people like reading my input. It gives me reason to keep typing. I like that Dtoid gives us an opportunity to have a voice, every other gaming website where I use to voice my opinion most people either didn't care or just flamed me.

Make a black DSi XL at around $125 and you can have my money, Nintendo.

You make good points, and rationally, I see they're very valid. It just seems to me as if Nintendo should be doing everything it can to be pushing its future, versus focusing on its past by offering up new models (designed to spur consumer interest).

Well, people are still making DS games. Nintendo themselves is putting out a new DS Kirby.

To be fair Nick, this model getting released was probably already set in stone BEFORE Nintendo ever thought the 3DS was in trouble, and couldn't just abandon production for it.

Whatever choices they made to spur sales of the new system (you know, OTHER than the big price drop) we probably won't see before the 4th quarter.

myosan here sorry for all the anti 3DS views recently but I really do love my little black box and how I miss my XL..this my friends is a money spinner when o have enough cash I'll buy another XL to go with my gba gba sp ds lite and 3DS..it's a family thing....

Its just a freaking new color people. The way some people are acting, its like you think Nintendo just announced a new economy version of the DS, you know maybe without WiFi. Oh wait no, that's right it was Sony who just did that, with their 6 almost 7yo system. When their new system will be out in Japan a month, or two after the PSP E1000 comes out in October.

My point is, its just a color change, so what difference does it make to Nintendo, which systems they sell? They still get the money either way. Did Sony kill off the PS2, when it was outselling the PS3? No, they gave it price drop, so it would sell even more. Its called a business people. These companies try to make money, on all of their products, until they absolutely can't sell them anymore!

im honestly thinking about getting a dsi xl, i have a huge collection of ds games and i want the best possible system to play them on, and seeing as they look like shit on 3ds, i might just go ahead and purchase the xl soon, not a pink one though.

This is really counter intuitive. But, considering the profits will still all go to Nintendo, they can release whichever handheld they want.
