Not a RAW deal at all: THQ offers 3 PS2 WWE classics on the cheap photo

Does wrestling still have as much of an audience as it did years ago? I can only speak for myself, of course, but I haven’t watched Monday Night Raw in nearly five years. However, in high school, I spent countless weekday afternoons playing the PS1 games WWF SmackDown! and WWF SmackDown! 2: Know Your Role with my friends, and we were all really into wrestling back then. I haven’t played a wrestling videogame since the disappointing WWF SmackDown!: Just Bring It on the PS2, but apparently, THQ has been putting one out every year since then.

As of tomorrow, March 5th, you’ll be able to pick up three of those newer PS2 bestsellers in a package deal. Currently available on Amazon for pre-order is WWE SmackDown vs. Raw Superstar Series, which brings together the first three games of the SvR series: WWE SmackDown vs. Raw, WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2006, and WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2007 (boy, that’s a mouthful).

The three-game set will retail for $29.99, which makes it very similar to another collection of classics that will be out in two weeks. However, unlike Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection, the press release (after the jump) for this set mentions no extra content aside from the original games themselves. Still, you can’t complain about three full games for $30, and for wrestling fans looking to get into the video game series, this seems like a great way to do it. Does this tickle your fancy, Dtoiders?

THREE CLASSIC WWE® SMACKDOWN® VS. RAW® VIDEOGAMES TOGETHER FOR ONLY $29.99

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw Superstar Series Now Available For the PlayStation® 2 Computer Entertainment System

(AGOURA HILLS, CALIF., March 4, 2008) – THQ Inc. today announced that three of its top selling WWE® SmackDown® vs. Raw® videogames are now available in one package for a suggested retail price of $29.99. WWE SmackDown vs. Raw Superstar Series will include the first three videogames of the popular WWE SmackDown vs. Raw series: WWE® SmackDown® vs. Raw®, WWE® SmackDown® vs. Raw® 2006 and WWE® SmackDown® vs. Raw® 2007. WWE SmackDown vs. Raw Superstar Series is available exclusively for the PlayStation® 2 computer entertainment system.

Today’s release of WWE SmackDown vs. Raw Superstar Series is the perfect prelude to WrestleMania® 24, which is scheduled for March 30, 2008 in Orlando, Fla.

Developed by Yuke’s Co., Ltd., the WWE SmackDown vs. Raw videogames have introduced players to the virtual experience of living the life of a WWE Superstar. Since its first installment, the series has brought WWE programming to life through a host of key new features, extensive rosters with WWE’s most popular Superstars, incredible graphics and engaging action in and beyond the ring.

I saw "WWE Classics" and was hoping for SvR 2006, Here Comes the Pain, and Shut Your Mouth.

Instead, I saw 2006 and two mediocre wrestling titles. I'll pass.

Isn't this just buying the same game three times over? It's like a Madden package, the only difference is possibly roster changes and maybe improved game mechanics, in which case why not just the latest edition?

I do have one question. Are these games gonna have Chris Benoit in them or is THQ erasing him from the games, much like WWE has erased Benoit from their history books.

Wow, I don't even know where to begin, why would anyone purchase this, and not the actual updated one?

"in which case why not just the latest edition?"

Probably because 2008 wasn't really an improvement. Then again, that's just me. I haven't enjoyed a WWE game since SvR 2006.

As for wrestling games in general, Fire Pro Returns is where it's at.

@ZeroSignal

That's a good reason not to buy the most recent but why would you need all three of these at once? That was more my point. And yes Fire Pro is the shit.

I'm still waiting on Fire Pro Returns to get released here in the UK. I'm so jealous of not being able to play that :(

Could always wait for TNA Impact (lol)

Yeah, I got what you were saying. I rented 2007 and 2008 and quickly noticed that... nothing really changed, except for the roster which is already outdated months before the game comes out.

Wouldn't this be the equivalent to EA putting out a "Madden collector's series"? You're essentially getting three copies of the same game with roster changes and slight tweaks.

This set is retarded. Unless you're a collector, and somehow missed out on the games before, I don't know why anyone would pick these up.

What a joke of a deal.

Also, I watched Raw last night (don't ask why) and I can confirm that it's about the worst show on television.

It's just too bad the Smackdown series sucks dick. It's too bad Aki isn't making wrestling games anymore, they were the best. Fire Pro and Aki wrestling titles are the best you will get.

I used to watch wrestling when I was younger and now I can't stand it. The only fun wrestling game was on the N64 and I can't remember the name...it was awesome though.

@Samit Sarkar

Actually F Whipple got it but just not the revenge part as the game is WCW vs NWO (had to google it). I remember playing the crap out of that game with my friends.

Who buys these games new in the first place? The last time I in any way even interacted with wrestling was playing smackdown on my PS1

I heard the TNA guys working on the TNA game are big fans of the n64 wrestling games and they were trying to make it as close to those as they could. Maybe it'll be sweet.

Couldn't you just get the "original" versions used for like 5 bucks a piece? You'd save money and get the original roster from before WWE tried to act like Chris Benoit never existed.

Yeah, they sort of ruined the games at 2k7, totally revamping the combat system into some retarded confusing mess.

I don't really care about WWE at all, but the create a character feature in these things are awesome, and it's great to make a stable of your own freaks in your own custom league to play with.

And to all the collectors of the world, you can thank ME for the Devil May Cry 3 pack not having the red bar Greatist Hits packaging. I made a very vehement point in a meeting with Capcom a couple of years back about how gamers hate anything that defaces the cover art, and that most people buying a 3 pack collection would be collectors anyway.

Unfortunately it was already too late for the Resident Evil on GameCube pack at that point, but notice that Hitman was saved from this fate as well.

I demand thanks from the unwashed masses.

I dunno, I had the same sentiment as Cowzilla: Isn't this like packaging Madden '05, '06, and '07 and then selling them for $30 instead of the Gamestop price of $6?
