Not a joke: Devil May Cry 4 going digital this month photo

For some reason, Devil May Cry 4 on PC is only now about to be offered through digital distribution outlets. As they say over on Capcom Unity, it's "better late than never." December 22 is the day this will go down, in case you missed out on the latest installment of this series.

Do people still dislike Devil May Cry 4? It seemed like, at least for a time, everyone came together to hate on the game. Personally, I never understood why. Dante not being the primary focus -- I'll give you that one. Otherwise, it seemed like a relatively good action game.

The campy cutscenes? So not a bad thing. That said, the timing for the last boss can go f**k itself.

I liked DMC4, Nero wasn't so bad, and fuck you all, I like Johnny Yong Bosch as a VA. I almost squealed when I heard Firion talk for the first time in english.

The one thing for me that can go f**k itself are those goddamn dice games. I must have been on level 19 for about an hour fighting the same battles over and over because I kept getting unlucky rolls.

DMC4 was originally slated as a PS3 exclusive. It went multiplatform. That's really all you need to know to understand the hate. It's called the wrath of demented PS3 fanboys...

Oh my god. That was the worst part of the game.

Mini-review time!: I felt they should have stuck with Nero the whole way through. Throwing Dante in there halfway through felt like they had ZERO confidence in Nero.
"Don't worry, you'll get to play as Dante soon!"

Going through the game backwards, fighting the same bosses and enemies again? That was not necessary. Dante's gameplay DID change it up alot, but it doesn't change the fact that it's lazy ass game design.

Even with all it's problems, I really enjoyed it. It's not as good as the other 2 DMC games though.*

*DMC2 is not a DMC game.

People hated DMC4? I only hated Nero as a character. I feel like he's been done before.

Of course, after the excellent and much more fast-paced DMC3, I can see why some people would be pissed.

It wasn't "bad" like DMC 2 was, it just wasn't excellent. While Nero's new mechanics did gel with the series (in fact, I thought JYB's Nero was more fun than Dante), the level designs were pretty awful, and there wasn't much additional content: something the franchise is known for.

DMC 4 is a perfect example of a "7"ish game.

I hated DMC4 not because of no Dante (I actually preferred Nero over him), but because of the end game. You fight the same bosses about 4 times and you have to roll a dice, making a short, stupid level take about 68 minutes. Awful design choice, there.

I thought Nero was a great 'eyecandy' addition to the series but I hope later DMC series include both Nero and Dante in a way that their playstyles can diverge more from "Nero has the Devil Buster... Dante has styles and weapons." Although the Buster gave some amazing visual moments (I found myself playing the game at least twice just to see all the modifications that Devil Trigger makes on grabbing each enemy), it felt like a simplified Dante. I also wasn't a big fan of Nero's Exceed system and thought it was just a twitchy man's version of the kind of attention that a great Dante-player would put into quickly shifting styles and weapons.

I'd like to see DMC5, if Nero's in it, as a game where you more or less have a choice at the beginning of the game to either go with Nero and Dante and I'd like to see their games, while entailing the same levels technically, to have divergent paths sort of similar to how Sonic 3 with Knuckles was Sonic 3, but some levels were almost 100% different due to Knuckles' abilities.

I can't believe I just referenced Sonic and Knuckles in relation to DMC4.

at least thats how they stacked up for me. 1 only lags behind because it feels so dated.

I loved these games. I thought 1, 3, and 4 were all great. And Nero's hand added a much-needed newness to the system that was getting tired.

ummmm the dice in the game could be controlled....

The number on the top of die when you hit is the number you'll get. All you had to do was time your devil arm right.

Also DMC4's bloody Palace is a pretty good challenge.

DMC4 was a disappointment. Going from 3's brilliant combat to a bastardized version where you couldn't even toggle between locked-on enemies was painful. However, I really liked the Nero mechanics. It was a shame that the upgrade system was shit and that they only gave us half a game to play through twice (one time with Nero, and the next with nerfed Dante). Couple that with a 20-minute install, a worse story than 3's, and a caricaturization of Dante, and you get a big disappointment in my book.

I blame myself though, I was beyond hyped for it.

I just replayed DMC4 the other day and I still love it, I can't believe that anyone complained about it as much as they did! I agree with the smaller complaints though, having to fight the same bosses 3 times was a bit much and retreading the same ground with Dante was a bit weak, but having the 2 characters was a great feature as they were so different. I even found myself preferring Nero's Buster/Exceed system over Dante's style switch system.

Despite its faults, it may not be as great as DMC3 but I thought it was pretty damn close, which still makes it a fucking awesome game.

Oh, and to anyone that complained about the dice game, de BLOO hit it on the head, I got through those sections using this trick in about a minute each.

I never really had any problems with the dice part. Got through it pretty quickly, tho it was incredibly satisfying to watch dante simply slice the thing in 2 when his turn showed up.
And I, for one, really liked DMC4. Might play it a little again before the UK release of bayonetta

I liked Devil May Cry 4, obviously it was not as good as DMC3 cause Dante was the secondary main character, and the fact you had to fight alot of the bosses 3 times was kinda weird but other than that this was a great game.

I played through about half of it and got sick of it though. >_>

As someone who's already sunk somewhere around 100 or more hours in to this game on pc I cant really say I understand why anyone would hate it. I've yet to play another game that replicates the experience you get from this on the pc exclusive dark knight mode where you can be fighting up to 500 or more enemies at once. Only downside is you need a gamepad to play it.

I really enjoyed DMC4, but I have to agree to that 3 was a much better game overall. Nero's play style, while much different from Dante's, was a lot of fun, and you can deal out much more damage than Dante in the same amount of time if you know what you are doing.

Also, the dice games are REALLY easy. It's not random at all. All you have to do is hit the die on when the side before the one you want is showing in the sequence.

I recall most of the hate coming from Sony fanboys that were all pissy about one of their exclusives coming to the 360. I'm glad it did get a multiplatform release honestly, because I still don't know any PS3 owners that have this game. Regardless of the platform though, it was an amazing game. I still play it from time to time, and hope more people pick up on this once it does go digital!

It's weird to think DM4 was going to be a PS3 exclusive once...because I actually made the mistake of getting the PS3 version first and it was bad.

Not the game itself, but the install was so long I had time to go take a shower. And not a quick one.

And even then the loading of scenes, despite that install, took forever. Even the controls were loose. I know this because I went and checked out the 360 version (I'm lucky enough to have both) and the controls were good. It really felt like it'd been built for a 360 controller with this title.

The game itself, from characters to graphics (speaking of graphics, I was pissed when I saw the graphics were better, not the same, on 360...I felt ripped off) and boss batttles, it was pretty good stuff.

I DO hate on DMC4...the PS3 version. It was inferior on a technical level by more than a slight degree. There was no excuse for the game not looking and playing equal on each machine. For those reasons, I flip a finger at DMC4 and won't buy DMC5 till I rent next time.

I actually liked this game. I was a bit disappointed that you had to play most of the game as Nero, but when the time finally came round to play as Dante, I actually preferred playing as Nero.

It's alright. It wasn't godly like DMC3, but it still alright.
But the thing that annoyed me the most was when playing the same levels and bosses again, but as Dante.
That was plain lazy.

The game could have used more polish all around More Bosses, More Missions, Better Backstory for Nero etc. I still enjoyed it though.

Hopefully they learn from the criticisms and make Devil May Cry 5 the best one in the series. Which it better be, because I'm not going to want to see a Devil May Cry 6 after that.

it's a great game, not stellar. it suffers from some structural weaknesses like the backtracking. I think most of the hate is sony fanboys lashing out at Capco for wanting to make money (those scoundrels!) and xbox people not really caring about the franchise. Also why the f did they make Nero look exactly like Dante?
