North America can download Tekken 5 on the PS3 this month photo

Previously only a Japanese download via the PlayStation Network, PlayStation 3 owners in North America will be able to download Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection later this month. Of course, it wouldn't be a Sony news item if it didn't contain a smidgen of bad news. Sorry y'all, no online play for this one. From 1UP:

We asked Namco Bandai if online play was an undocumented feature in the North American release of Tekken 5, representatives from the company told 1UP the following: "Online play will not be available in this download."

Because thus far Dark Ressurection is only on the PSP.

God I wish I had a PS3 right now...

...and as far as I know, no online is pretty much the standard position most 3-d fighting games take now-a-days, lag and the need for precise timing being the main reasons.

This isn't Sony bad news. This is "same as usual" news.

Already had the game from the japanese store because I was sick of waiting. Good enough news for the people that have been waiting patiently though.

A lot of people don't mind the lack of online play.
Dare I say, thank god for Robert Summa?
No, I probably shouldn't.

So they want us to pay money for essentially Tekken 3 with more characters. After 3 I stopped caring about Tekken and moved to Virtua Fighter's geener pastures.

@Milofo

hmmm so virtua fighter 5 is original? Virtua fighter is guilty of the same thing. The only difference is that people actually play tekken.

Milofo, you could conversely say that Virtua Fighter 5 is Virtua Fighter 4 with more characters. And the price is higher than Dark Ressurection. (it's what, 30 bucks?)

ZING!

Most people who bitch about Virtua Fighter 5 have never played it. I actually have been for around 6 monthes so I know what its like. I can tell you this, it is not a clone of VF4. Not all fighting game series make clones of their previous games, for example Street Fighter 3, but a lot do like the Tekken series so people think the same rules apply everywhere. If you really want to know about Virtua Fighter go here, http://www.destructoid.com/virtua-fighter-5-features-trailer-leaves-nex-cold-surprisingly-lonely-29612.phtml#comments

I was upset with all the Virtua Fighter hate around here so I saw fit to write the truth.

Again, read what I wrote what I wrote in my link then say what you want. I only speak from experience of playing both series and not just look at screen shots and spamm my opinion on forums. Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection is also in my arcade here so I have played it, and I could use Law's moves from 3 to now for the most part.

I'm not saying that virtua fighter is a bad game. It is probably the deepest fighting game there is but that still doesn't change the fact that noone plays it. Even in Japan people are playing more and more tekken. I'm sorry but I don't feel like playing one character for like a year to master it. In the end its about fun factor and tekken in my opinion is more fun than virtua fighter. There is more competition and the competitive scene is bigger also.

Its fine if you like Tekken more then Virtua Fighter, everyone has their own preference, but you are feeding me some huge bullshit about which is the more compettative scene. I kind of live in Japan right now and have been for 1/2 a year and the whole time everyone is playing Virtua Fighter while the Tekken machines are not played at all. I don't know where you get your information from, but from someone that lives in Japan Virtua Fighter is king.

Milofo speaks the truth to some extent. Depending on where you are, Tekken isn't as popular as VF in Japan. The opposite can be said when you go to Korea. It's all about play location. As for the VF/Tekken debate, it's always been heated. I am a east coast tournament player and Milofo certainly seems to know his VF, no doubt about it. Although saying Tekken DR = T3 with more characters is pretty far off base. The changes from T3 and single game revisions like T5>T5.1>DR are actually quite robust with each version changing the core gameplay more than say VF4>VF4 Evolution. I have been an avid VF and Tekken fan but both games have grown a great deal with each sequel/revision.

You know why Korea likes Tekken better than Virtua Fighter?

Because Sega still refuses to add a Korean/Taekwondo user to the roster.

And they added, what, a third wrestler?? A luchadore no less!

Sony isn't fucking anybody by not putting online play in this. Being a huge 3d fighting fan, the smallest amount of online latency can kill a game that bases itself around frame specific attacks, very specific timing and so forth. A great example is Guilty Gear X2 Reload when it was on XBL. It was a great technical game with a huge fan base but the online play was horrible because you had to resort to lag tactics. This was all you heard about. People hated the game and it was shunned for having such horrible online play. You would have the same bitching if Tekken was ever online.

As far as extras and other things added for console versions, there is definatly a difference between Tekken 3 and 5 but when I play at the arcades there doesn't seem to be much different, maybe I'm missing something.

@deiga
Its only 2 that are wrestlers but I know the sentiment since I didn't like the idea of another fake fighting style going in; practice kung fu myself and a little kickboxing. Even though wrestling and luche libre are pretty fake, they make it work playwise in the game. Thinking game mechanics I don't know if Tae Kwon Do would work because it needs to be different in play from the other characters, Tae Kwon Do uses too many kicks, and I don't want a button masher like Hwang in Tekken(at least he was in 3 and 4 to me).

@Milofo
There are huge differences from each game. I honestly don't feel like typing everything out but the frame data/hit properties for characters alone from the games give you an idea of how drastic you would alter your play style. Take into account that over the span of two games, they added closed stages, uneven levels, position changes, wall techs, just frames moves, escapeable stuns, offensive wall attacks, always retooling the okizemi system and taking it out almost completely in 5.1, and countless other things they have added, changed, and removed. You might still have some of the same moves for characters, but they implementation of moves have changed a lot from game to game. You might not "see" the difference depending on your skill and how much/who you play, but I assure you, it's there. As you know, it's the same way with Virtua Fighter as you have noted before.

Yep timing and stuff like that is definatly changed. Virtua Fighter doesn't have the layered stages like DoA or Tekken but it definatly has the wall attacks and such. Maybe because I use Law I havn't seen much different. I can say Heiachi last boss is cheap as hell though, same with Dural.
