Non-review: Why I couldn't finish Demon's Souls photo

We're not in the business of reviewing games we don't finish, so I'll say right away that I did not finish Demon's Souls, the latest action RPG for the PlayStation 3. Because of this, we will not be giving it a review score this week. This write-up is going to have to suffice. Sorry.

It's not that I didn't want to finish it. I truly do, and I look forward to doing so. It just isn't going to happen now. The review date is upon us, and I've got plenty more game to go. On top of this, Atlus has pulled down the gaming press test servers to prepare for the game's retail launch.

I regularly plow through 80+ hour epics in no time as a reviewer, barely breaking a sweat; I'm kind of known for that around these parts. And it's not that Demon's Souls is a long game; that's not the case at all. The issue here is that I couldn't finish it in a timely manner. It was just too hard for me to do so, and I think I was playing it wrong.

It's not that Demon's Souls is a bad game. Actually, it's a very good game, and one that I'd recommend to gamers that like a stiff challenge. It's an incredibly rewarding experience at times, too. This is the type of game where patience and a mind for strategy are more important than reflexes. But it's also the type of game that is so difficult that you'll sometimes have to put the controller down and step outside for some fresh air. It's been awhile since I've played a "controller breaker." Demon's Souls is definitely a controller breaker.

Collecting souls is the whole point of Demon's Souls, an action RPG from From Software, published by Atlus USA. Become a warrior, fight enemies to get souls, get stronger. But you'll have to make it out of each level intact to make good use of these souls, and that's the real challenge here.  If you die, you lose all the souls you've amassed. My problem is that I died far too often.

You'll see: you will die in minutes. You're supposed to. That's not a bad thing, mind you. It's kind of how Demon's Souls work. You're supposed to get up, dust yourself off, learn why you died there, and then come back in a soul form, doing your best not to die there again. In this soul form, you'll have half the hit points you did as a living person, making it even easier to die again. Can the dead die again? Not really. But you can fail as many times as necessary, forcing you to start over from the level's start each time. I did this many, many times, losing everything I gained for sometimes an hour or more, starting over from the very beginning each time. Frustrating is an understatement.

Hard, but pretty.

Demon's Souls is all about learning from mistakes. My problem is that it took me too long to do so. An online-connected game will give you plenty of help as far as learning from mistakes goes. You'll see the souls of other gamers playing on the same level. If you see a blood stain on the ground, that's where they died. Using it, you can actually watch their dying animation, giving you some hints on what not to do when you proceed. Messages can also be left for other gamers (or yourself) to warn of upcoming dangers. Both are nifty ways to help gamers ascend the steep difficulty incline, but I feel like Demon's Souls is so difficult that you're better off being as cautious as possible at all times. Depending on these blood stains and messages is a sure-fire way to become a blood stain yourself.

So why couldn't I finish Demon's Souls? I think my main problem is that I played it like an action game for too long. While you have a sword to swing and full control of your character, mindlessly slashing away is a quick way to find yourself face down on the ground. My desire to explore had me mashing the R1 button to swing my sword as quickly as possible, with the goal of taking down enemies as fast as possible. It turns out that I should have used the aiming feature (R3) and battle strategy (like long-range magic attacks)  instead. The game also provides evasive maneuvers (backwards roll) and a shield that took me too long to put to good use.

I also didn't place enough stock in memorization. Things go down in Demon's Souls almost exactly the same way they did the time before, when you died. Enemies are in the same place, for the most part, as are obstacles and checkpoints. Much like the more challenging dungeon romps of our youth, Demon's Souls needs you to know and expect what is coming up next. You'll have to go into battle fully prepared for all of the level's obstacles. The amount of patience required to learn from your repeated deaths is immeasurable.

This will not end well.

Simply put, I was not prepared for the challenge Demon's Souls provided. I've played some difficult games lately, but this is on a whole different level. This is not a negative thing, and I feel like you'd have to play it to understand the depth of this statement. I just want to make it clear that my lack of preparation and patience is the cause for me missing the review time frame, and that the game is not at fault in any way.

Would I recommend Demon's Souls? Wholeheartedly. It's a beautifully crafted game that demands your undivided attention and forces you to recall gamer skills that you proably haven't used in more than a decade. Don't let the fact that I didn't finish it dissuade you from enjoying it. I can't wait to jump back in. Don't let the difficulty factor stop you, either. Demon's Souls is difficult in the best way, much like some of the best NES and Super Nintendo era games were. Those with enough patience and dedication will be rewarded with the type of game we just don't see much of anymore.

I heard a couple of rumors that a certain reviewer (or reviewers) couldn't finish a review copy of Demon Souls because of its difficulty. I can't believe that person was you Mr. North

play offline. other people will only interupt your game after you get past the tower guards fog door in 1-2 entering 1-3 then the nightmare starts after the penetrator. so play it offline its nice having co-op but for the sake of reviewing it play offline, then when you want to do the online segment replay the story online simple.

MrSadistic - i'd bet that more than a few "reviews" out there came from unfinished games. Not calling them out, but i know when we got review copy, and to see the reviews go up that quick....well, yeah

The only thing that Dale admitted that was kinda a turnoff is it is a "Controller Breaker" other than that this game sounds pretty damn awesome.

I tend to break controllers fairly often. Hopefully i can take it easy cause ive been looking forward to this game for a while and PS3 controllers are expensive!

Funny, I pre-ordered it yesterday from Amazon (Deluxe Edition)

I'm up for a challenge. And it's not the cheap kind either.

CAN'T WAIT.

Nice little write-up Dale, my copy will be arriving tomorrow(hurray Amazon Prime) and I'm so pissed that I didn't get a replacement PS3 yet.

A big suggestion I've seen around boards is playing the game offline your first time, and then if you're gonna dive into it a second time, then you go online to experiment or play differently. This is because you get to play New Game+ style with everything you got except Quest items, and I would assume you would know what to do already.

Firstly? I appreciate this write-up MORE than I would have a full review. I think it says more, and while I'll still be picking the game up, I look to reviews for outside perspective on possible purchases from a seasoned writer. That is exactly what this was.

That said, over the years I've seen tons of games (Ninja Gaiden, Prinny, Comix Zone, etc etc) where reviewers specifically criticize a game for being difficult; not imbalanced, just difficult. I'd like to raspberry in the general direction of those practice. I like the "heads up" about a challenge in written reviews, but when I see people write "It was hard. 4/10" without explaining why, I just frown.

"i'd bet that more than a few "reviews" out there came from unfinished games. Not calling them out, but i know when we got review copy, and to see the reviews go up that quick....well, yeah"
I'd believe that. I was listening to the CAGcast and Shipwreck was talking about how he and another reviewer never made it past the first level. Hearing stuff like thus makes me wonder why I actually want this game.....

Good Non-Review, I think it's better if this game didn't get a rating, there's way to much that depends on the player/players rather than the game.

It reminds me of Oblivion. If you don't know how to play it, you're going to suffer.
I hate and love Oblivion leveling system at the same time but for someone unprepared it can be frustrating.

In Demon's Souls' case I would argue that you don't need to "finish" the game to get a reasonable, "score-worthy" appraisal of its quality. There's no real plot that could fall off the rails in the second half, or characters that die (besides you, over and over again).

Once you get past the tutorial and first stage, literally all of the game's options are open. The level cap is 712]. Going to New Game+ actually increases the difficulty, and with the World Tendency system in place, the game will have to be "farmed" over multiple times to see the changes that appear going from pure white to pure black.

It's simply not a game to be picked up, then put down once the credits roll.

All the good press and promises of "reward" simply don't make up for the fact that I will never have enough time in my days to play this game as it is meant to be played. I'm intrigued by its existence, and yet content that I will never, ever play this as anything more than on loan from a friend to see what all this "dying" is about.

I also liked this write up.

I've grown to respect our Destructoid community, which I now feel a part of, and having to go somewhere else to a full review is a nuisance. I'm a little disappointed because a complete review would have been nice. At least you had the guts to tell us you couldn't finish, and that takes a lot of cojones. All aside the insight you provided regarding why you couldn't finish is a big help to all of us waiting for our copy.

Quality "non-review" of this game. The above shows how pointless actual scores are. At best, they serve for an aggregate indicator of the game quality. I was really curious about picking this game up but, given that Brutal Legends and Dragon Age are on the horizon, I will pass for now.

To all the people who think this is "impossible". It's not.

You'll find that after a few hours, everything will click for you. Maybe it didn't click for Dale, and it happens, but for most people, it will.

Also, exactly what unangbangkay said. You do not have to finish the game to get the full picture. As someone who has reviewed, and finished the game, I can safely say that everything you experience in the first 10 hours is representative of the finished product.

I did a double take when I first saw this, this was my thought process: "Dale North couldn't beat Demon Souls, shit, what have I gotten myself into." I've wanted a hardcore game with old school sensibilities for a long time now but I'm starting to worry that Demon Souls may be too much game for me. I still can't wait for tomorrow though. >=)

Oh, forgot:

"You'll see: you will die in minutes. You're supposed to."

Use the cling ring, and level up health. Also, the game really excels at the "fight or flight" mechanic. Those beetles you mentioned above in the picture? They're really easy to avoid, and you never have to fight them.

I just noticed that while I attempted to quell preorder customer's fears, I didn't stop and say "NICE REVIEW, DALE!"

If I had to guess your score, it would be an 8.5.

Also, one last thing for prospective buyers: if you got the deluxe edition, which comes with the strategy guide, you'll have nothing to worry about. It'll teach you where/how to easily craft the best weapons in the game very early on.

Nice work man, glad you are willing to write about your experiences with the game without tacking a number on it!

I pre-ordered the deluxe edition of this game and I am actually nervuos about it as I keep hearing how hard it is, but I guess the strategy guide will come in handy!

i hope it's not stupid hard like Ninja Gaiden Sigma, I sold that game as it was not fun to play at all, hard for the sake of being hard is not fun :(

Thanks for the honest review!! I'd far rather know that a game is like this rather than have some reviewer want to show he's got "game" by reviewing it and not mentioning the difficulty or frustration for those that go into the game without knowing. I suspect that there are other reviewers that didn't actually complete the game... but didn't bother saying so in their review.

Having played the shit out of the imported version, I found out that it's only hard if my idea of "hard" included dying a lot. After a while, I approached it like I did God Hand, got used to dying for stupid mistakes, learned, and enjoyed the fuck out of it.
