No Zelda or Mario before early 2009 photo

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata realizes that Nintendo fans are disappointed. In a recent interview with SpiegelOnline, Iwata was nothing short of humble when discussing Nintendo's failure to capture the hardcore gamer at E3 this year. When prompted to respond to the sentiment of disappointment from gamers, Iwata explained that the reason Nintendo was not able to cater to the hardcore crowd was because of release schedules.

We wanted to show what we are this year and [in] early 2009 on the market. We have [never neglected] hardcore gamers, and there are still teams in such games. It just takes longer [to develop] these games; they finish in two to three years. We could not bring any [hardcore games] in the beginning of 2009, so we couldn’t show any at E3.

If Iwata's previous statements about upcoming hardcore games mean anything, this implies that Mario, Zelda, or even Pikmin will appear eventually, just not before early 2009. All of this was prefaced by Iwata saying that the Wii’s success was built on the premise of lowering “the hurdle” of games to bring along a new following. Certainly, while it may be exciting to get our hands on one of those hallmark first-party Nintendo titles like Mario or Zelda, I think I’ll pass on the new standard that is WiiMusic. Hopefully Mr. Iwata doesn’t think that the majority of us would like to watch Link walk through a dungeon as we mindlessly hit “A” to simulate discovery.

They need to bring out some DLC for Mario Galaxy, the potential of extra levels that could be made in that game is infinite.

in other words, nintendo is just going to totally ignore the core-gamer during the holiday season?

I'd rather them take time to make the games great than rush them out.

@Justice: Maybe if they release a storage solution and stop being five years behind in terms of online content.

@mistic: Yes, and make a KILLING with stuff like Wii Music and Wii Sports 2. WOAH, HOW UNEXPECTED. (That was sarcasm.)

Personally, I'm surprised and pleased they're even bothering with "hardcore" games anymore when they make boatloads of cash with "games" like Wii Fit and Wii Music. They make more off of lazy garbage, it seems.

E3 2008 Press Conference wants a word with you, sir.

P.S. Do you think he even believes his own lies?

Good. It's about time they took a break from their main franchises.

Considering the length of time between major Mario releases, I'm not surprised at all. Consider that Galaxy came out in 2007 - we shouldn't be seeing one until at least 2010, in my opinion. A major Zelda sounds on track for Christmas 2009, though.

Still, poor showing, Nintendo: we're expecting this stuff already, and you have nothing to offer us this holiday season. I'm disappointed.

"Zelda? AGAIN. Christ, how many times can they repeat the same goddam formula."

Considering "gritty" FPS's come out like twice a month and decent action adventure/rpg's only come out like once or twice a year, I'm not complaining. Don't like it? Don't play it.

No shit there won't be any Mario or Zelda games for a while. They don't release one of them every year because those are quality games that really do take a lot of time. The real question is: WHERE THE FUCK IS KIRBY?

If I had a Wii, given the quality of most of their third-party titles, I would find it more worrying that if it's not Zelda, Mario, or another main franchise Nintendo has nothing to show those over the age of 8.

I would like them to get the games right, like they did with the last Mario and Zelda games. So I am ok to wait. I almost forgot they made real games for the Wii.

Agreed. Let's just hope third-party developers can take up the slack until then.

Also, I'd like to agree with those saying they should take their time.

It was what, five years between Sunshine and Galaxy? And look how good that break did. Lots of new, fresh, fun ideas.

In a perfect world, Zelda should come out in 2010. I think they need to remp up the new concepts after Twilight Princess.

Not that it was a bad game, it just brought little change to the party. Forest Temple, Fire Temple, Water Temple... It was just too much like Ocarina of Time.

I hope the next Zelda takes a page from Mario Galaxy and brings fresh, exciting concepts to the table.

I really hope they take their time making the next one. They must have rushed the last one since they forgot to make it challenging or fun.

Well, I'm certainly glad that they're not releasing them on an annual basis.

Also, seeing as how Nintendo doesn't think that E3 was the place to display games for the core gamer, would this be a slight wink and nudge to the return of Nintendo Spaceworld?

The issue sir is we are concerned with where Nintendo's priorities are. why should we care about our Wii. Thats why people are upset with Nintendo, because nobody can ask for any good first party titles this christmas. I'll be buying a bunch of 360 titles, but I guess the wii will collect more dust until at least summer 09. Seems like Nintendo is no longer interested with selling games for the wii when there are so many consoles to be sold.

My biggest issue is that we get told that 3 games are possible in the works. The Mario and Zelda teams two games and Pikmin. Where is all of this fat cash that the wii makes going? Microsoft finally just produced their first profitable quarter on the 360, but they have been going out and purchasing up new titles or new developers for awhile now. they don't just have 3 teams working on 3 games for the next year. Nintendo used to be all about games. Thats why their virtual console does so well. Now however they seem to be all about accessories and thats a shame.

I agree with The-Excel, it would be nice to some other games besides Mario and Zelda. Not that I am saying I don't want to see any eventually.
But hey, there is still some good games coming out for the Wii, even for the core gamers. I definitely will be looking forward to games such as Warioland: Shake Dimension and Tales of Symphonia 2.

Nintendo's problem is that they need better 3rd party support so that people have something to play in between Mario and Zelda games.

Why is Nintendo trying to milk Zelda and Mario again? I'll agree with them that 2008 is just too soon after the last Mario to be trying to find another way to play the series. There are so many other great franchises that remain untapped, or could even be resurrected for the Wii. I would kill to see a First Person Punch Out!! a new Mario Paint, a new F-Zero, or a new Star Fox. Why does it HAVE to be Mario or Zelda?

Why does a "hardcore" nintendo game have to be about Zelda, Mario, or Metroid? Can't we have like, something else?

Thirty year olds who are still into Mario. yeah.

The only chance you have of seeing another Mario is when another console is released.

So far, the only system that has had more than one Mario game has been the NES. No other Nintendo home console has ever had more than one, And don't you dare tell me that Yoshi's Island is the Second Mario for SNES. They slapped SMW2 on that because they were scared to death it wouldn't sell otherwise.

There's a good chance you'll see another New Super Mario bros on the DS, and it might translate to Wiiware at some point, but if you're expecting another Galaxy, you'll probably will get it when Wii2 comes out.

Zelda on the other hand has a good chance of getting a second game. They usually make two of those per system.

I didn't really expect Mario or Zelda at E3, because games of that caliber really do take several years to develop. Two things bother me though: first, why couldn't they start Pikmin 3 earlier and show it to us, and why couldn't they show a logo for Mario and Zelda, like they did for GTA:CTW? It would have saved the conference, IMO.
