Nintendo president Satoru Iwata realizes that Nintendo fans are disappointed. In a recent interview with SpiegelOnline, Iwata was nothing short of humble when discussing Nintendo's failure to capture the hardcore gamer at E3 this year. When prompted to respond to the sentiment of disappointment from gamers, Iwata explained that the reason Nintendo was not able to cater to the hardcore crowd was because of release schedules.
We wanted to show what we are this year and [in] early 2009 on the market. We have [never neglected] hardcore gamers, and there are still teams in such games. It just takes longer [to develop] these games; they finish in two to three years. We could not bring any [hardcore games] in the beginning of 2009, so we couldn’t show any at E3.
If Iwata's previous statements about upcoming hardcore games mean anything, this implies that Mario, Zelda, or even Pikmin will appear eventually, just not before early 2009. All of this was prefaced by Iwata saying that the Wii’s success was built on the premise of lowering “the hurdle” of games to bring along a new following. Certainly, while it may be exciting to get our hands on one of those hallmark first-party Nintendo titles like Mario or Zelda, I think I’ll pass on the new standard that is WiiMusic. Hopefully Mr. Iwata doesn’t think that the majority of us would like to watch Link walk through a dungeon as we mindlessly hit “A” to simulate discovery.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
@mistic: Yes, and make a KILLING with stuff like Wii Music and Wii Sports 2. WOAH, HOW UNEXPECTED. (That was sarcasm.)
Personally, I'm surprised and pleased they're even bothering with "hardcore" games anymore when they make boatloads of cash with "games" like Wii Fit and Wii Music. They make more off of lazy garbage, it seems.
E3 2008 Press Conference wants a word with you, sir.
P.S. Do you think he even believes his own lies?
Still, poor showing, Nintendo: we're expecting this stuff already, and you have nothing to offer us this holiday season. I'm disappointed.
Considering "gritty" FPS's come out like twice a month and decent action adventure/rpg's only come out like once or twice a year, I'm not complaining. Don't like it? Don't play it.
Agreed. Let's just hope third-party developers can take up the slack until then.
It was what, five years between Sunshine and Galaxy? And look how good that break did. Lots of new, fresh, fun ideas.
In a perfect world, Zelda should come out in 2010. I think they need to remp up the new concepts after Twilight Princess.
Not that it was a bad game, it just brought little change to the party. Forest Temple, Fire Temple, Water Temple... It was just too much like Ocarina of Time.
I hope the next Zelda takes a page from Mario Galaxy and brings fresh, exciting concepts to the table.
Also, seeing as how Nintendo doesn't think that E3 was the place to display games for the core gamer, would this be a slight wink and nudge to the return of Nintendo Spaceworld?
My biggest issue is that we get told that 3 games are possible in the works. The Mario and Zelda teams two games and Pikmin. Where is all of this fat cash that the wii makes going? Microsoft finally just produced their first profitable quarter on the 360, but they have been going out and purchasing up new titles or new developers for awhile now. they don't just have 3 teams working on 3 games for the next year. Nintendo used to be all about games. Thats why their virtual console does so well. Now however they seem to be all about accessories and thats a shame.
But hey, there is still some good games coming out for the Wii, even for the core gamers. I definitely will be looking forward to games such as Warioland: Shake Dimension and Tales of Symphonia 2.
E3ALITY
Thirty year olds who are still into Mario. yeah.
So far, the only system that has had more than one Mario game has been the NES. No other Nintendo home console has ever had more than one, And don't you dare tell me that Yoshi's Island is the Second Mario for SNES. They slapped SMW2 on that because they were scared to death it wouldn't sell otherwise.
There's a good chance you'll see another New Super Mario bros on the DS, and it might translate to Wiiware at some point, but if you're expecting another Galaxy, you'll probably will get it when Wii2 comes out.
Zelda on the other hand has a good chance of getting a second game. They usually make two of those per system.
