No voice chat for Brawl? Say it ain't so! photo

If you counted yourself among the many that were looking forward to seeing voice chat make an appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii, your hopes have just been dashed. Speaking with IGN, Masahiro Sakurai let the bad news slip:

"Well, when I first started making Smash Bros. Brawl, I thought it would be wonderful if online battles between friends had voice chat and potentially keyboard based chat as well. But there are all sorts of rules and regulations regarding communication on the Wii platform and so it was apparent to me that it just wouldn't come together, we weren't going to be able to do it, so we decided to cancel that feature. I'm very sorry about that. But if you're really desperate for it, you could set up Skype by your game station and go at it with a friend if you like"

This was never a deal-breaker for me, but I'm still pondering over that part about "all sorts of rules and regulations" concerning communications on the Wii platform. So this isn't something mandated by the FCC, but rather an internal Nintendo thing? So much for Nintendo's claim of avoiding the pitfalls of restrictions. Sad news indeed, but we all know this game's going to rock, regardless of this.

[Thanks, Adam!]

I don't know if anybody mentioned this cause there are many comments but the Wiimote doesn't have a mic built into it, the DS does. Anyways...it sucks but this just means that Nintendo is looking out for people and kids.

I am trying to look at this piece of poo positively!

Well I don't care. I'd rather be upset if a match lagged because of voice-chat and SSBB is a game where there must not be any lag so yeah, stfu about no voice-chat, if you want it so badly you'll find a solution, if not don't buy the game, simple as that.

All these anti-pedo measures are crimping our style... I wanted to play SSBB with my brother and be able to talk trash like we did back with the original... now I gotta make a phone call? And if voice chat's going to kill the bandwidth, the issue would be with the Wiis network coding. Great console, but you don't have to guzzle Nintendo's koolaid so readily.

@vexed alex:
Missing the point? Why? Because we have an opinion? As GoldBond and many others said: You don't need voice-chat in Brawl, you only get to experience Brawl truly if you invite friends over. I agree that it's shitty without leaderboards but hey, the game has so much content I won't miss it. So plz go play Halo 3 again, a game which unlike SSBB relies on online-play, and stop trolling about no voice-chat.

No dude, you're definitely missing the point. I'm glad all your friends who want to play Brawl live within driving distance. That's great. Awesome for you. But not everyone has that luxury. A lot of my friends live in Orlando which is about a 3 hour drive from me. I'd like to play them AND be able to talk to them without having to run up my phone bill.

The point though is that this is basic shit that only Nintendo seems to get away with. You don't to voice chat with your friends, cool. But that doesn't mean it shouldn't be an option.

Again though, this doesn't make or break SSBB, it just sucks that Nintendo treats it's entire audience like toddlers.

wow, this got ridiculously heated, very quickly.

Personally I don't think Brawl needs voice chat, even when I play with friends we really don't say much during the matches anyway. It really makes the taunts that much more effective as well, especially with each character having four now. I can see why people might think its a good idea, but its really not necessary.

I'm not defending Nintendo either, when it comes to online they are completely inept, but this choice seems to be better for the GAMEPLAY, which is all I care about. The less lag the better, and its free... and its wireless. SO even though it seems like they are in the stone age, you might want to think about the actual decision for this SITUATION. It was the best option, I think.

I am kinda disappointed by peoples reaction to this. Are we so impressed by this game we are forgetting some of the expectaions we should be holding developers to? If you dont want to hear some 13 year old talk shit then we should be able to pull up the menu and turn voice chat off (hell put a parental code on this feature if need be). Why should we be setting up skype on a seperate computer? If Xbox 360 and PS3 game developers created a FPS without built in voice would that be acceptable?

I love nintendo, I cant wait to play this game, But we need to hold Nintendo to higher expections than we do right now. No voice chat?
No harddrive?
These shortcomings are unacceptable in this day of gaming.

It's a Nintendo thing, Nintendo loves friends codes for the same reason they despise voice chat with "strangers". They really want to protect the "E for Everyone" crowd from the "M for Mature" Crowd.

Basically the [unwritten] rule is, "If you can guarantee that the 10 and under crowd will never hear any naught-bits over voice/text chat, then go for it, otherwise, forget it."

I mean the only way you can chat is if you exchange friends codes. I guess this is a safeguard, Nintendo figures you should at least know the person before you can freely chat with them. It's a sucky system, but until voice chat can be filtered/censored, what can ya do?

There's always a solution for everything, if you want it so badly you'll find one. As many said (including myself) smash bros was never about online, it's a neat addition and I fully understand that people appreciate it but please, we're still talking about Nintendo. They have their own philosophy and if you don't accept it like I did years ago... well then that's bad for you. It's like getting a XBOX360 and expecting a bunch of good non-shooting Multiplayer-Fun-Games like Mario Kart or Smash Bros.

I don't think that the exclusion of voice-chat is going to ruin the game for anybody, so fuck this whole discussion, some people just bought a Wii expecting a Online-Monster...

I'd rather have voice-chat or at least text (you'll get really fast and in fact I'm writing this on my Wii) with your friends between the matches like Mario Kart and I admit that this truly is a shame but during the match? No thanks. There are so many games other games where voice-chat makes sense like teh haloz, Gears and any other FPS but SSB?

Ah and because I know that many will see me as a wannabe phoenix wright/apollo justice for Ninty I've collected a few things I don't like about them, enjoy:

1. friggin sport-based mario games and general abuse of the franchise, like they couldn't have figured out an other one.

2. Overpriced VC-Games

3. No Wii HDD or Flash storage device

4. Friend Codes

and so on...

The difference between you and me is that I've learned to live with Nintendos faults and in my eyes they seem minor if you compare them with the competition, they just hit the soft spot. If Ninty can't deliver me an experience I wish for I'll just play it on another platform, it's not like it's going to kill me.

If it was voice chat enabled, there'd be freakout scare pieces on the local news somewhere, guaranteed. Just like with Pictochat.

Sucks, but doesn't bother me personally too much. As has been pointed out, most conversation during a match amounts to "Fuck! I died," or "Pikachu is cheap and I hope you get cancer."

Well then don't buy the fucking game. Let me guess, you were one of those that skipped Metroid Prime 3 for not having online multiplayer. It's not hard to imagine that some people will complain like they always do. Just get over it, okay? Some people here act like their life depends on voice-chat. I never said Brawl should have no chat at all but I really can't stand people complaining about every little shit, but that's teh internetz I guess.

"we want online-play for brawl!" - "here you go" - "aw geez, we also want voice-chat" - "sorry can't have it" - "oh noez! damn fuckerz!!1!"

As I said, if you want it so badly you'll find a solution. Like a bluetooth headset or something. Come on guys, you can't say that there's absolutely no way to set up voice chat. With all these complaints about it you could as well go and tell your mom, Nintendo isn't going to listen. I'm glad Sakurai filled the game with so much content to cover it up but if you want something to change you have to make nintendo feel it, like don't buy their games or something. I still think they're working on a channel that works in the background or something else like an external device. So again: No voice-chat is disappointing but not something that HAS to be in Brawl. If you still think it's a industry standard and Ninty has to put it in you haven't understood the concept of the Wii and maybe bought the wrong system.

I think the worst part of all the bitching is that somewhere along the way we stopped thinking of online features as being supplemental to the core game, and now we seem to think they're fucking required in every game out there.

This isn't to say that it's not discouraging to see Nintendo being a bit too guarded with their online shit, or being totally backward thinking depending on how you wanna look at it, but gamers are sort of assholes when they don't get what they think they have the right to.

Yeah, as consumers our opinions ought to help shape what we're getting, but the sense of self-importance that mindset has instilled in some people is downright appalling. There's never any middle ground. If a developer leaves out even one feature that self-absorbed gamers think ought to have been included and they cry foul. Then we get this sort of discussion.

Eh, I'd like to see Nintendo get their act together sure, and voice-chat might have been cool to have in Brawl, but the lack of a secondary (If complimentary) feature aint worth whining about to my mind.

This is exactly why Nintendo is fucking gay. and this is the perfect example of nintendo fanboys happy of bending over for nintendo, taking it up the ass, and then getting a facial.

Its fucking bullshit. "rules and regulations"? what the fuck is he talking about? either they implement voice chat or they don't, its simple as that. Could you image if Bungie came out and said that there was going to be no voice chat in Halo 3, but you could use skype on your computer instead? They would be the ones getting fucked in the ass.

Nintendo can go fuck themselves. Its shit like this that just makes me not be able to stand them anymore. I don't know how to express my anger and frustration any better in words other than saying that Nintendo fucking sucks and I hope that they die in a fire.

And yes it would be a cool option to discuss strategy with a player better then you, and it definitely would make playing with friends funner.

Again, missing the point a bit. It's not the end of the world. It's not going to change most people's opinion on whether to buy it or not. No one is surprised at this news (at least they shouldn't be). We know this.

It's more or less people getting fed up with Nintendo's overall way of doing things. Sakurai basically confirmed that it wasn't a matter of whether or not they could implement the feature, it was a matter of Nintendo making it more or less impossible to do so.

Should we not demand a certain standard from these people? Should we just take it up the ass and go "oh well. guess I should have known."?

Again, it's not a deal breaker or anything. I guess I'm trying to say that it's more about the bigger picture than just this game.

Bas, you're sitting here complaining about people complaining. It's a comment thread—we're commenting, and you're commenting. Some people are using heavy language (not least of all you) but that's normal.

There was a feature I was looking forward to that apparently got the axe. I'm disappointed, and I explained why. I explained why in my situation this lessens the enjoyment I'll eventually have. That's all.

I'm not sure why you're so dead-set on shutting people's disappointment up. I'm still buying the game, I'm still going to love it, and with my friends who can/will, I'm going to Skype or iChat with them while I play. As I've already said, I'm basically doing exactly what you suggest I do.

You're accusing people of saying things they're not saying, contradicting yourself within the same posts, and most importantly you're focusing wholly on your own opinions rather than reading other people's post carefully (you continually miss many of our counter-points).

And yeah, this is the Internet, which is why I'm still sitting here arguing with an idiot with no reading comprehension. Chill out. And while you're at it, if you don't like people complaining about little features or the lack thereof, don't read the comments to an article whose sole purpose is to discuss our reactions to an axed feature. The title should have clued you in.

So don't act like if it was.

I completely agree with you that we can't accept every thing Nintendo does but just because "the competition" uses these "standards" that doesn't mean that Nintendo has to use them too, it just doesn't fit in the concept of the Wii. Some people are still thinking Nintendo is competeing with MS and Sony on the same level but you know what? They're not. Read what I'll write to David Quinn and you'll understand why they do things like this.

@David Quinn Whatever
Look dude, I completely don't care if you buy the game or not, good for you if you'll enjoy a great game that doesn't essenitially need voice-chat, you're just naive expecting something like that from Nintendo, it's not my fault your childhood dream has been crushed just because you thought YOU could shape the game like you want. Sakurai himself said it, I said it: We feel sorry about it but in the end this is still like expecting from Microsoft Mod-Support for Unreal Tournament 3, they just won't do it so easily. But hey, have fun getting disappointed by every "cut" feature in every Nintendo game, it's going to happen a fuckload of times.

And about the other's posts: Everybody who has a problem with the absence of voice-chat has brought the point that you could make it friends-only or include a mute button or parental controls and so on. But hey, not every parent is as mindful as you and watching every step of their children. The average parents aren't going to check if there are parental controls in the game and when little Billy finally finds out what a threesome or a facial is, it isn't the parents fault for not caring no, it's Nintendos and you know that. So please look at it from another perspective before you talk shit about missing counter points. By now you should know that Nintendo doesn't care as much about their core-fanbase as they do about children and their retarded parents. Not everything revolves about getting your game-sessions as convenient as possible.

Wow people are getting super pissed about this, and I understand why. I live overseas from home, and I use XBOX Live to speak to my brother and all my friends. Without it, gaming would suck.
Maybe a lot of you Nintendo fan boys are introverts, but most people aren't...even if I don't want to talk, I still enjoy hearing the stupid stuff people say sometimes...and if it's too offensive I mute them or leave. Nintendo isn't giving anyone the choice, because they're lazy.
I think the Wii is such a joke. It's like they have one cool feature(motion controllers) and they half-arse everything else...like they've paid their dues or something. I'm tired of crappy looking N64 games...that apparently are so fun that basic features, graphics, and variety in games aren't important.

Well in an FPS you can take cover and have the downtime to mute individual people, if you stop for a second in SSBB you're toast. But that's besides the point.

You guys remember that Nintendo's first two systems were called the Famicom right? (That means FAMILY COMPUTER)
And gamers are distinctly NOT family friendly. Nintendo is just saying that they know how awesome their games are, and if you don't like conforming to their rules on their system you can happily go somewhere else and they will still be doing just fine.
