There are two problems for storage on Vita. The fact that its twice the price for the same read/write speeds as the cheaper market leader is one, but the other issue is that you don't have adequate storage until you get up closer to 16 or 32GB and even for PSOne Classics that can seem like a tight amount of space.
Meanwhile 16 or 32GB on 3DS is a freaking warehouse.
Also worth pointing out that Nintendo has pretty much cleared 20 million 3DS units worldwide while Vita is just barely past 2 million, if that. We'd actually have a number if Sony told us what it was, but the last number tracked was like pre-2 million.

Actually on Amazon the bigger memory cards have a nice % knocked off of them, for anyone on the fence.
I was thinking about picking up a Vita, but I just recently decided that I am going to pass. I don't see the possibility of any RPGs I will be interested in. This news just makes me feel like I am making a good decision.
Sony needs to realize their crappy cards are worth LESS than comparable cards because they can't be used in any other device. I'll wait for either a price-drop of the cards or a Vita Re-design that eats Micro-SD like everything else on the planet.
The base Vita price doesn't really seem that bad to me tho it could stand a good price drop. For me the real problem sits with the contrived, needlessly expensive proprietary memory.

I still feel that $250 is fair considering all the Tech that comes with the Vita, it's just the damn memory cards. They really should have used regular SD cards. Sure they've slightly gone down in price, but there still really high $81.58 for a Vita 32 GB card, when I can get a 32 GB SD Card for $20 or less.

But I don't think the price thing is an issue of pride so much as profit.
The intire 3ds situation was weird to say the least as when Nintendo started they were making profit on each system as usual.
That 100 dollar cut shocked everyone, no one expected Nintendo to do that because as long as I remember they have always sold systems for profit and now up until the 19 million mark they lost money on each 3ds.
Sony probably wanted to sell the vita for more but went to match Nintendo so they were selling the thing at a loss to begin with. Their plan probably was to match the 3ds in units and make up the loss with memory cards and games. I bet money they didn't think Nintendo would make such a cut either.
Now that the 3ds is cheaper what's there options, to take another cut or rely on releases to even out the system costs, they probably went with the latter as they have to pull a profit from this device eventually.

Honestly sony needs the price drop... I just picked up a Vita last week but ended up returning it due to build quality (Weak left analog and mushy right trigger). If they're going to make Vita a $400 purchase (Memory card + Game) the least they could do is make sure it has top notch build quality. Until then at $250 I'm going to feel like I'm throwing my money away.
I've been saying this since the system came out, but its good to hear the sentiments mutually ringing about; system price okay, memory price not. It's funny to think how many overall sales they lost just because of that one little (huge) oversight. It is truly the successor to the PSP in every way.
Dragon's Crown is about the only game I'm interested in so a price drop wouldnt inspire a purchase out of me.

It's especially baffling considering they make MORE money from digital sales. Triple-Billing us for the digital games by making the storage super-expensive is just outright retarded.
The memory prices are pretty much immoral, but I don't get the people expecting Sony to cut the price, like, YESTERDAY. The Vita is a lot more powerful and expensive than the 3DS, and Nintendo hemorrhaged money when they dropped the price. Sony is already losing money on each Vita sold, and people actually expect the Vita to compete on price with the 3DS?
The current price is what I would have originally expected the first price cut to be after a year on the market. Memory prices do need to come down but more than anything, it just needs games.

I love my Vita, but I'm still having trouble bringing myself to upgrading the memory past the free 4GB card I received.
so far Vita has nothing to offer for me. and given sony's slow pace to introduce features that should be in Vita since launch to begin with i doubt even 100$ price-cut will make this system worth it. the only games that i'm interested in are:
Disgaea 3 - which i finished on ps3 anyway so it's more of a "when it's cheap" buy,
Persona 4 Gold - which i finished on ps2 and want only for new content,
Dragon's Crown which was, as far as i remember, postponed indefinitely,
Special Report Division - which let's be honest here, will never be released outside Japan,

You can get a memory card for a ... well, not THAT bad price at Amazon if you catch a good sale. They're still pricey but you can knock 25 or 30% off if you're savvy. If that helps anyone.
Much like Jim, I really, really, really want to use my Vita more than I do. The thing's an amazing piece of technology that had the misfortune to be made by the single most idiotic technology company in the world.
That's fine. Vita is already cheap. FREAKING 5" TRUE OLED, HELLO!? The screen alone is worth the price of the system.
The actual system is worth its weight i are gold. It is those damn memory cards. I could easily add another hundred dollars to the price of getting started on a Vita. That would be hitting my ceiling on how much I could reasonably see myself spending and that still seems too damn high.

My problems with the vita are high price for digital and pay DLC content on the games. DLC should never happen on a handheld system.

@ElektroDragon OLED-Screens have some serious degradation issues. I'd personally prefer a good (IPS or Super LCD 2) Display since I'm not going to buy a new Vita every two years.
Still, the price of the System itself is fine and absolutely fair. It's just not fair to milk people with the memory.

Their bundles do seem promising, an assassins creed one is coming out and that carry's asscreed 3 liberation with a kick ass crystal white color vita, for the original price of 250.

honestly, if the vita memory cards where priced reasonably i would have bought a vita with at least three games and tons on psn games but since they are full of it, they get no money from me.
Price is determined by the company, but worth is determined by the consumer. Sony thinks the Vita is worth $300+ (and so do many of Sony's defenders), but the consumers have decided that it is over-priced. Nintendo, with all of its proven franchises and glasses-free 3D, couldn't get $250 for a handheld, why did Sony think they could?

Wow. All of the good press they built up with Gamescom just went right out the window. I'm on a budget and I can't justify a $250 handheld when a decent sized Memory Card is gonna run me another $50+, and games will cost me $40+.

Nothing for nothing, even with the problems they seem to have selling it, it doesn't need a price cut. It needs big draw games.
