No Team Fortress 2 updates for the PS3 ... ever photo

Today, Valve’s marketing director, Doug Lombardi, told 1UP that the recent updates to Team Fortress 2 will not hit the PlayStation 3 version of the game. The reason isn’t because Gabe Newell doesn’t like the PS3 (although the man certainly doesn’t); it’s because Valve doesn’t have any internal PS3 development going on.

And the new gets worse. The only reason The Orange Box hit the PS3 is because Electronic Arts farmed it out, and as far as Lombardi knows, all development on the popular set that contains TF2 has ceased. That means any update is totally out of the picture.

Obviously, the lack of support is frustrating for fans of the PS3 version. It’s like going to a bar and not being rewarded with your second round after you already paid. Valve’s stance on development for Sony’s platform is that the console isn’t worth the trouble. Doesn’t this little fact affect whether you purchase the game or not? Would you consider buying Left 4 Dead on the PS3, knowing that the title will probably get this same treatment?

Part of me wants to buy Orange Box to show Valve that they do have people on the PS3 who want their products. On the other hand, if they're going to keep complaining that EA put their IPs on the PS3, why would I want to give them my money??

man, what the fuck? I know it isn't the most popular version, but if you make the damn game you should make sure people are around to make the add-ons. I got a lot of enjoyment out of Orange Box, but I feel severely ripped of knowing that I won't be getting content that I should get. ARGH!!!

Goddammit, despite the relatively large PS3 TF2 community, I figured we'd get screwed over like this...
Although, perhaps, if EA really wanted the money, they'd take all the updates and turn them into paid DLC...

That's not true. In his interview with 1UP Gabe Newell said this about the PS3:

I think we need to do a good job with supporting the PS3 with the Source engine. Our engine licensees would like us to do it. I think we need to invest more in getting that in there. So I think that we'll, over time, be directly more and more supporting the PS3 as our bandwidth allows us to.

I honestly think Team Fortress 2 is a crap game, so this doesn't affect me at all. I've had the Orange Box on both the 360 and PS3, and after playing TF2 like twice on the 360, I said never again.

This is only partially related but does anyone else think Microsoft might buy Valve? They'd pick up a great developer (who already are based in WA), some solid IP's and Steam all in one swoop.

It's not like the PS3 or 360 version is even worth playing if you have a PC able to play it. So.... don't care in the slightest. Will never buy a multiplatform FPS for a console.

Meanwhile, updates on the 360 will cost you extra while PC gamers have been reaping the benefits of free updates since day one.

I own a 360 and I own this game on both systems I feel if you cant support both versions then I wont support you. Gaming is for everyone it doesnt matter what console you own it should be on both anyway see if you add both bases up that would give you 35 million potentail buyers of your software. thats a lot of money to toss away with the 16 million ps3 owners out there that you arent taking care off and what if you finally get a brain storm and decide to produce a game for the ps3. what if they say sorry we dont have need for your game. you wasted all that money developing the game for it to bomb. you maybe laughing now, but in the end we the gamer will be laughing in the end.

Wasn't the whole point of the Source engine to have a single engine that different games could run on? Shouldn't the content be platform-independant, like Java, or more relevantly, like Spore or World of Warcraft?
Daxelman's Avatar

While Im quite miffed that the recent updates for the PS3 version of TF2 won't be happening, and therefor I might have to settle with an outdated TF2 when I get my PS3 if my PC isn't up to date...

I don't care. Gabe should take over Nintendo Wifi Connection instead of kicking PS3+Orange Box owners in the face.

I love it when people comment in any type of thread just to say "This doesn't affect me so I don't really care." Just as annoying as the folks who like to point out that they don't own or watch TV and try to emphasize the inherent superiority of that fact.

As for Valve, I'm very disappointed in the way they have (or in the majority of cases, haven't) handled the entire PS3 situation. Maybe Newell's earlier disparaging of the PS3 has tinted my view of later announcements, but even their level-headed quotes rub me the wrong way. Here's hoping they find more "bandwidth" in the future.

Source was designed as a multi-game engine, not a multi-platform engine. Valve has done ZERO work to get anything of theirs working on the PS3. It was outsourced. Was anyone really expecting an outsourced port to be supported past launch?

I don't know why you guys are mad at Valve. They didn't even want to do a PS3 version, and it wouldn't be in existence if it weren't for their retail publishing partnership with EA.

360 or PS3 - either way you bought the wrong version of the game. Consoles just aren't nearly as flexible for developers to update their game and add content as PC is, and probably never will be due to the business end of it. Even if the developer made content makes it over, you're still missing out on the loads of amazing user community content & double player cap.

I wouldn't blame Valve, I'd blame EA. Valve apparently wasn't interested in making A PS3 version of Orange Box - it appears that was all EA. It was farmed out by EA, so why should Valve be forced to support a version of their game they didn't make? If EA cared about the PS3 version of the game, they'd find a way to have content released on the PS3 but they likely dont see it worth the effort.

Mentok: It isn't Valve's fault, the team it was outsourced to is fucking lame.

But seriously, why the hell would you want to play it on ps3? That's probably the worst console to play it on, ignoring the fact that there isn't an update for tf2.
