No Super Meat Boy on PS3, and you can blame Sony photo

Super Meat Boy will eventually find its way to Xbox 360, Wii and PC, excluding as it will a PS3 release. Now, because you start stamping your feet and shouting "BIAS" while tears start to cloud your vision, make sure you direct your anger at the right people -- Sony itself.

"Why wont this question die? We have answered it publicly at least 15 times but it just never ends," says Team Meat. "We can't EVER do a PS3 version of Super Meat Boy because when we were going into negotiations with publishers, Sony was the only one that didn't express much interest in the game. We assumed this meant they didn't want the game, and [we] decided to sign with Nintendo and Microsoft.

"Our contracts excluded any release on PS3. We would have loved to do a PS3 version, but its not at all possible whatsoever now, so please stop asking about it."

That legitimately surprises me. Sony has often demonstrated itself as welcoming of unique indie titles, leading to a PSN full of rich, varied and unique games. The fact it snubbed Team Meat is disappointing to say the least. Ah well, Sony's loss is everybody else's gain, apparently.

That's OK. DualShock 3 controllers are too expensive to replace anyways. I'm pretty sure a Wiimote or a Classic Controller is cheaper to replace when the buttons break.

Most people with a PS3 surely also have a 360, Wii, or PC too, so it's not like they have to miss out. I still need to get around to playing that demo, but I have like a gazillion other XBLA games I need to play before I buy more. It looks like gobs of fun (get it, like meat gobs? hilarious!), though.

*raises hand* I have no interest in Super Meat Boy either. Whenever there's a related news article I just glance over it... Hope that's ok.

@Byronic Man:
Your "glancing" abilities clearly surpass that of us mortals since you can post on a story that you didn't read.

Too bad for PS3 owners. It's easily my favorite download-only title of the year. It reminds me of the crushing difficulty from the NES days. PC is good alternative, but you'll need a robust gamepad that can take a few collisions with the floor/wall.

They're very defensive and just down right agitated when answering questions from the media, and fans. I think they need to go to media training, or get fucking happier that they just made a great game, that most people want to play. Its only they're first mass released game and they're already acting like "jaded, pretentious, prima donna's" developers that have been around for 10 years, or more. You guys are just making games, you're not curing cancer, so stop taking everything so damn seriously!

@KenAkuma: I think Jim unique in not only how they look but also how they play. Take Flower, PJ Eden, Nobi Nobi Boy, Linger in Shadows as examples; they're pretty unique in their own.

Wait, wait, wait.. From reading that it would seem that Sony is NOT to blame. Sony initially showed no interest. No problem there, it just didn't interest them. When Team Meat went to other publishers they ended up signing a contract that didn't allow them to release the game on PS3.

"Our contracts excluded any release on PS3."

So, the blame would more than likely be on Microsoft, or Nintendo. I'm sure that had Meat Boy become more popular or generated some cash, then Sony would have been more than happy to take it onboard.

If a game like this doesn't interest them initially, I see that as a fault. Sony is to blame because they obviously can't recognize an awesome game when they see it.

I have no way of playing this thanks to the cunts at Team Meat/Microsoft/Nintendo. That's seriously bull-shit how you can excluse a single platform and that's OK. Exclusive: fine, but just to say "Anything except ps3" is downright unfair business etiquette. Dislike a lot.

No ill will to Team Meat. I would love to buy their game. However, I don't own a Wii and find the Xbox pad useless on games of this nature. That really left only the PS3 as a option for me, which alas is not an option. I'll direct my sadness to Sony though. They really dropped the ball here.

What munkee said... It seems more like Microsoft or Nintendo's fault.. Hell, we can even blame the developers for signing the contract. We can point fingers all day, but in the end, no Super Meat Boy on PSN. That's all there is to it? So who cares whose fault it is? But it's surely Jim's fault for flamebaiting again. Jesus Christ. I hate stories like these. But I still love you, Jim. ;)

I say that blaming Sony is fair. They probably got more favourable contract terms from Microsoft and Nintendo for agreeing not to publish on the PS3. As PEICanada pointed out, this is their first game. They don't really have any funding or anything. More favourable terms = more money in their pocket, and all they had to do was agree not to publish on a system they had no plans to publish on anyway.

The ball was in Sony's court. The offer was there, and Sony turned it down. Team Meat could have left the option open, but was then offered (what I assume to be) a bit more favourable terms to agree not to let Sony change its mind later.

It'd have been a snub if they said "Yeah, fuck Sony! Microsoft and Nintendo for life, yo!" They didn't. Sony didn't want the title, and if Sony didn't want it, Team Meat couldn't publish on it.

Well, it is interesting their exclusivity (excludivity?) deal left out PS3. Nintendo and MS united to leave out Sony? Because their exclusivity deal apparently didn't exclude either one of the parties.

i could care less for the game. i'm playing noby noby boy right now as a matter of fact, that is this generations greatest game/concept/tech demo/anti-christ/savior/ass-eater/hot dog stand/snake oil.

sony wants exclusive indie stuff, they don't like having to share that pie to the other systems in terms of advertising. and sony wants to fund any indie games that come to their console so they can then own the devs and have some kind of creative input.

Okay, Mr. Sterling, I'm going to say that I'm surprised at how this surprises you. The old story goes that Sony turned away a fair share of deals and even exclusivity rights from the beginning of this console cycle. I think the big one that I can at least remember was Rockstar approaching Sony to see if they wanted a similar temporary exclusivity deal for GTA4 and being pretty much blown off. Sony was more or less cocky and dismissive of third parties, so this seems pretty normal for them.

Sp while this isn't totally unheard of, I'll admit I thought this was a Kutaragi issue and not a Sony issue. Go fig.

@Meteorscrap - it is their first game together, but both have an impressive indie rapsheet, and if Sony didn't recognize McMillan from Gish and had no interest, they're not paying attention to the indie scene like they think they are. To close the door on team meat is 100% sony's bad.

This is obviously entirely Sony's fault. Team Meat invited each of the big three to publish their game. I have no idea what turned Sony off of it but they rejected the offer. It isn't Microsoft or Nintendo's job to keep business opportunities open for Sony.

Sony seems to prefer titles that are less interested in being games and more interested in being art. Except Joe Danger, which is one of my favourite PS3 games.

From what I've heard, Sony is not down with 2D looking games. There is a reason why Limbo is just on XBLA (for now) and Castle Crashers and Braid took forvere to get on PSN.

Starting with the PS1, Sony built their gaming empire on 3D gameplay. They don't get 2D.

iirc back in the PSX days Sony was all but forcing devs to make their games 3D. Sounds like they're keeping up that practice, which is a bummer.

Also sounds like they're only willing to pick up 2D games long after they've been a hit, and most people probably stopped caring, which is also a bummer. :(

lol@ the people insinuating that Sony's PSN has far less "original" games than the other systems. Other than being blatant fanboyism that they seem to think is veiled well, it is obvious to most that Sony's network contains the vastly superior library of titles, in regards of originality and uniqueness. Obviously, gameplay and value are arguable, but the "indie"-originality factor is practically indisputable.

are you an idiot? PS1 classics alone rapes everything XBLA has to offer. i would rather get unreleased PS1 games that never made it to the west. instead of bullshit things like avatars and themes.

and oh fuck yeah No More Heroes Paradise coming in the PS3. expect the eventual release of No More Heroes 2 Paradise with basically all of the features from the 1st paradise with extra goodies(maybe Henry's sidestory or Shinobi's way of becoming the number 1 assassin in japan)

sad to say about this news. though both sides have their plus and minuses. like the XBLA not getting steam support, others exclusive bullshit DLC etc...

and if you want more indie games that are really diverse and unique not to mention easy way and hassle free? go for PC(which they are already doing)

Strange that he says "contactS" exclude any PSN release. I find it hard to believe that Nintendo would stipulate anything like this so that leads me to believe that the MS contract had them state it. Not surprising because as some have already said, a lot of folks with a Wii have either a 360 and/or PS3 as well. Also, please consider the source: an apparently sore indie dev who may or may not be telling the whole story here. Just take a grain of salt with it is all.

I'm vegan so I want no part of this fucking meat shit :-P, but this article and so many others like it seem like nothing more than fodder for the fanboys. I am just so tired of the console fighting. It's not even real! It's totally imaginary!! Just play and enjoy a game console or maybe 2 or 3 of them!! That's all you have to do!!

sorry for calling you idiot. since destructoid is known for trolling by users. but you seem to be a good guy so my bad ^^

@janoDX i guess you have not followed the news in the game no? Paradise features an "IMPROVED loading times, Blood?, EXCLUSIVE BOSS FIGHTS FROM NMH2 which don't make sense but it's there(hopefully dark star is). not to mention Tak Fuji(ONE MIRRION TRUPS) is a fan of NMH so he's making it the best deal possible.

http://www.siliconera.com/2010/11/10/fight-no-more-heroes-2-bosses-on-ps3-in-heroes-paradise/

and even though Suda is not involved in the development of paradise, they still made it. heck i already bought the first 2 games from the wii and the imported version(which is 90$) im willing to buy this again just for the english subs and dual track alone. remember what happened to sigma 2 when itagaki say's there won't be a port of 2 for the PS3? yeah so anything is possible.

please support this, i saw the credits suda's supervisor of the game. it's sad the first 2 games never became hits. hopefully by now alot of people will be buying this. oh No More Heroes 3 please :)

I could get it for the wii or I could just wait for MS timed exclusive to go away. This sounds more like the GTA4 episodes that were supposed to never be released on the ps3 so I'll just wait. Anyone else wondered why it released first on 360 even though nintendo showed the most interest in it from the begining, it seems it was just another contract.
