No StarCraft II this year photo

We brought you news last week that several major retailers were giving StarCraft II a December 3 release date. Although it was in no way official, something seemed rather fishy that they would all announce the same date a week before Blizzard’s 2008 Worldwide Invitational. That being the case, it seemed likely that Blizzard would offer some sort of statement on the matter during the event this weekend.

That’s exactly what Vice President Rob Pardo did when he trampled this rumor (along with my hopes) with all the fury of a rampaging Zerg Ultralisk. According to Pardo, Blizzard is only “about a third of the way through” the single player campaign and is currently focusing on the story and all those pretty cinematics that keep us entertained between battles. Oh well.

Pardo does mention that Blizzard will have something nice to satiate StarCraft deprived gamers at the end of this year. A demo, perhaps? He also mentions that StarCraft II will be releasing simultaneously on Macs. So, yeah, there’s that.

Does this news disappoint or are you too psyched about Diablo 3 to really care right now?

[Via Kotaku – Thanks, Brian]

I've always liked Diablo more than starcraft but that has more to do with genres than anything else. I really believed the Dec. 3rd date to be true and thus, my hopes are shattered. Oh well...

The latter is my case.

Now that we face this, put your hand on your chests and tell me: Did you rally believe it was coming on November, do you really believe that?
Come on, it´s Blizzard, I am sure they celebrate Christmas on April.

lame! I much prefer Starcraft to Diablo. Blizzard sure does take a long time, which no doubt is them perfecting themselves, but still with the looks of the game now it at least looked like it was pretty damn far in development.

I think Blizzard announces their games way to early.
The waiting for both Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 is killing me!

Blizzrd isn't exactly known for brief development cycles. Then again the reason Blizzrd games are the industry standard is they don't release unfinished garbage *cough*EA*cough*

Another expansion pack for WoW will quell Blizzard fans for now.

anyone who knows anything about Blizzard's history could've told you there wasn't a snowball's chance in hell of Starcraft 2 launching that early. however, i don't think we'll have to wait that long after dec. anyway.

blizzard has a long, consistent history of releasing games and their sequels/expansions on the same months (in some cases, even on the same day). Warcraft 3 and it's expansion Frozen Throne were both released in early July. Diablo 2 and it's expansion LoD were both released on June 29 exactly. breaking the mold is Starcraft (oh the irony) released on March 31 of "98 while it's expansion Broodwar was released precisely 8 months later in November.

so i'd say March '09 is a potential candidate. not a lock of course but, given the evidence, definately a point of interest. as for Diablo 3, one could also look at June 2010 as a possible release though that might seem cruel after revealing so much so soon...who knows...

Dammit I almost got over this news and you had to bring it up again? Starcraft II > Diablo 3... still!

I knew that wasn't coming out until 2009, but still, I had hope.

I know people get jacked for starcraft but I'm too pumped for Diablo 3 to care about this.

Too psyched about Diablo III to care. If they stopped production on SC2 to get DIII out faster I'd be overjoyed.

Disappointing only because it probably means an even longer wait for Diablo 3...

Blizzard hasn't had their requisite X number of delays yet. Probably why they're not even giving a release date for anything anymore, it'll just be out when it's done. I'll be waiting for Portal 2 in the meantime. :-)

No problem for me. Blizzard games are always supremely polished and I don't mind waiting to get a classic games (nearly EVERY Blizzard game). Roll on SC2 and D3! (got WoW and DotA too keep me occupied in the meantime!).

with all the games being announced or planned by bliz alone for this years end. I'd never think they would put starcraft 2 out this year.
