No Starcraft II in 2007; Zerg cosplay will have to wait photo

In a recent interview with MSNBC, Blizzard's vice president of game design, Rob Pardo, reveals that there's no way in hell Starcraft II will be released in 2007. All five people who were optimistic (and stupid) enough to believe that we'd actually see the sequel this year are off crying into their custom-made Terran helmets.

Despite the fact that the game was just revealed publicly a week ago, many might be surprised to hear that the team at Blizzard have been working on the game since wrapping up with Warcraft III. Pull out a calendar and weep -- that's five years ago, and they're still not done yet.

The good news is that quality games take time, and Blizzard is more than willing to spend as much time and money to make sure that Korea is happy with the final results. A poor sequel is how wars are started, people.

Excuse me, 5 years to make SC 1.5? I see a slightly revamped graphics engine with shader model 2.0, some new units. They haven't made anything NEW. And it's taking this long? I don't care about Blizzard PRoducts anymore, flagship studios is where its at, thats where the talent went.

tis okay with companies like Valve, Blizz, and id, cause when they finally do release it we are still playing 10 years later.

@flaakmoney:

What Valve game are you playing 10 years later? The only re-play value any of their games has is CS and that was made by an asia man who sold it to them.

As far as SC goes, I don't know anyone except people in south korea who are still playing Starcraft, Warcraft 3 yes, so thats 5 years.

Diablo 2 is a 6 year game. I don't think anyone can make a 10 year replay value game.

SC 1.5 is the same game you've been playing for "10 years" so are you going to say 20 year game then?

The loyalty is absurd, open your eyes, they're lazy, greedy people and the talent has either retired or moved elsewhere.

Who the hell thought it would be out in 2007? They've only just announced it.

I suspect Q 3 - 4 2008.

It may be even longer then Q3-4 2008. If previous accounts have taught me anything it's that games always get pushed back. Now it would be nice to see this on shelves next year, but I'm not going to get my hopes up.

And to people who say that it's Starcraft 1.5. Isn't that what most of us want? We loved the old Starcraft, but it is just outdated now. I welcome the same style of game with better looking and more units. It's the gameplay that I loved that is just an extra treat.

Maybe thats what YOU want and the Koreans. But not the cinema happy go lucky americans who want a story and innovation with shiny new technology.

I'm serious bored with StarCraft. Sure it's a great game but just because the Matrix is a good movie doesn't mean they should make it again with a few new characters and in high-definition.

This is SC, our favorite RTS yet it doesn't revolutionize the Genre like it did in 98? Instead we get a 90s RTS with 21st century graphics?

Raise your standards please.

Blizzard has never once let me down with the games they make.......except for announcing and showing screens of Ghost , which still hasn't come out but that's another story. I have no worries about Starcraft and neither should any other blizzard fans, so just be patient. Let them craft the star of the rts show and when it comes out nothing will be better

Even tough I am very much looking forward to SC2, bruceleethree does have a point. Blizzard doesn't innovate much once it has a hit game. They add a few units and up the resolution, and possibly jump to 3D. They are so afraid they'll piss off the people that live and breath the franchise. I loved Diablo, but felt like they got lazy with Diablo 2. SC2 looks great, I hope they did a little more with it than pretty it up in 3D and add a few units.

i still play starcraft(broodwar mind you) on a private server. b.net died along time ago when little 10 year old's learned how to hack and thought it would be fun to mass carriers in 3min. however the private servers offer great gameplay and opponents. 2008 will mean that i HAVE been playing starcraft for 10 years.

and also, it was just announced. we were shown a couple of protoss units and one building. obviously we have no idea what they have in store for us.

I think there is a lot of come and to be announced from SC2, we have only just been given the initial announcement and people are already saying how its not revolutionary, given them time to announce everything for god sakes.

Of course there are games with replay values of more than 10 years... Falcon 4.0 easily comes to mind (come on, I know some of you wanted to be a fighter pilot back in the day...). Let Blizzard take their time, it's not like they have a track record that instills worry!

You do make a good point, it's true I haven't played the game in quite a while for that reason. I guess what I should have said is I would enjoy the same 'style' of gameplay but with the added bonus of having another great in depth story.

But it is getting harder and harder to revolutionize the genre how much more can we really add into a game before it just becomes a convoluted mess.

Well said, but being the die-hard fan of RTS games from Blizzard, I just expected more for a 5 year development time and unlimited budget.

It will be interesting to see what Halo Wars has in store, but still, Warcraft 3 gave us Heroes and Zoom-in and some other stuff, StarCraft is looked at as the greatest RTS ever, so it's successors needs to live up to the same standards.
