No sh*t: PSP piracy has taken a 'huge chunk' of game sales photo

SCEA's Peter Dille has been chatting to Gamasutra about a number of things, not least the infamous PSP piracy problem. With Sony not really doing much with its handheld system until recently, homebrew developers and piracy fans have taken it upon themselves to release games on the barren platform, whether Sony likes it or not. Sony doesn't like it.

"I’m convinced and we’re convinced that piracy has taken out a big chunk of our software sales on PSP," states Peter Dille, channeling Captain Obvious. "It’s been a problem that the industry has to address together; it’s one that I think the industry takes very seriously, but we need to do something to address this because it’s criminal what’s going on, quite frankly.

"It’s not good for us, but it’s not good for the development community. We can look at data from BitTorrent sites from the day Resistance: Retribution goes on sale and see how many copies are being downloaded illegally, and it’s frankly sickening."

Harsh words from Dille, and justified in many ways. I'll never condone the mass levels of piracy that go on right now, but let's face it. Up until very recently, gamers had to find and make their own entertainment with the PSP. Forcing gamers to update their firmware with every new game that comes out doesn't help, and only really annoys people who actually bought the game in the first place.

While the level of PSP piracy out there is quite rampant, one can't help but feel Sony had a hand in it.

So they're mad that while they weren't paying attention, people took the liberty of bettering their own gaming experience? I guess I can understand the torrent issue but... too bad. Sony makes enough money, I don't feel bad about ripping off some of their shit. It's a down economy, dammit!

can't rape the willing.

i don't pirate new games but old ones that you can't buy brand new without chunking down $70 on ebay for a sealed copy of xenogears and i will not wait for sony to get off their asses to bring em to the psn. when they do, i'll but them but until then, arr!

The hilarious part is how easy it is to rip UMDs, at least if you have CFW on there. I don't know the specifics, but wasn't the piracy an issue on the first release of the PSPs? Only several months after the Slim revision was efforts to hack the system somewhat thwarted. The 3000 is currently hackproof, but only for now. Who's to say it won't happen tomorrow?

like anything else piracy - sony is making the large assumption that people that are downloading and "pirating" the games would have went to the store and bought the game if they were not able to download it

let me clear it up for you - that is a big leap in logic - I am willing to bet a lot that the overwhelming majority of those who are downloading these games would NOT buy them regardless of their download availability
game = free: sure I will give it a try
game = not free: meh screw that game
and thats the truth of the matter
plus that pirate chick is hot

I most certainly have a CFW on my PSP, but that's mainly so I can play my entire PSX library on it. That's where most of my PSP gaming has come in. The sad fact of the matter is that most PSP games aren't even worth pirating!

When you throw the high price point of brand new PSP games into the mix, that makes the piracy even more rampart. I paid $40 for God of War, and got maybe a four hour game. That's insane. However, I plan on buying War of the Lions for a much more reasonable price of $20 in the near future.

If you could keep your games sub-$30, Sony, I bet you would see a lot less pirating.

the day the ps3 gets cfw is the day ps3 sakes shoot through the roof, it may not happen but alot of people are trying, and they are learning many things just from dissecting a hdd backup. their is already a proxy for bypassing firmware to play on psn, but only time will tell. sony made that ps3 with the knowledge of how the psp got ripped apart and how to make a pirates crack nightmare.

I might or might not have cfw on my psp. At the same time, I bought every UMD game that I like. And some that I didn't. It's the snes games I play most though. Also, I have gamefly, if I wanted I wouldn't be buying games if that was my goal, but I do.

Yes, but you're saying that the pirates had to do pirate-y things because there were no games to play. Dille is saying that people are pirating games that are out there to be purchased. It's not like he's complaining about people having NES games on their PSP, he's complaining about people pirating games that have been released for the system, so the explanation that "there were no games to play" doesn't really make sense here.

I'll be upfront: I am pretty much the only guy I know on video game message boards who doesn't pirate PSP games. I read the reviews of the games, get ones that sound like they're up my alley, and buy them. That said, I don't pay $40 for any new game: I buy 'em used, or on sale. I just think that if you find a good game and pick it up for $20, it's a good deal. If nobody buys them, they just won't make them any more, plain and simple.

BUT, I do wish they would expand the shit out of the selection of titles available on the PlayStation store. Why not just drop a few hundred games up there, all $25 or less? Have an assload for $10? There are tons of older PSP games that you can't find in your local EB Games or GameStop, wherever, and a lot of the out-of-print ones are $40+ on eBay. They should make a bigger effort to have digital distribution done easy and done right, and it will curb at least some of the 'border pirates' who get the games that way simply because it's not feasible to get them anywhere else. You'll always have hordes of teenage pirates online who won't pay for a game if they can pirate it, and that's too bad, but I think think they're missing the boat with online distribution.

akathatoneguy: The point is that when Sony was saying "If you have pirated firmware, you can't play our new games" when they had NO games to make that a realistic threat. Now that they HAVE games, people already have their custom firmware with no regrets, making it a lot easier for them to rip shit off.

I am not agreeing with it. I don't pirate PSP games (or even DS ones, for that matter), but Sony did help to encourage the image the PSP has a pirate's haven.

@Jim Sterling I pirate psp games, but I also buy them, mainly because if it is a game that I want, I want the UMD to be able to have a hard backup of the game, I NEVER play the UMDs, since they are slow and eat more power so I just rip them and play them from the stick. Though I have to say that there are a ton of crappy games out there and like the DS the psp has it's share of diner dashes and TMNT's and Scooby doos that should be fined for the waste of petroleum it took to make the games, but out of curiosity are worth the download to say exactly how crappy they are (hell sometimes I just search for the lowest rated games to try them). That said there is some awesome homebrew on the PSP (as well as the emulators) and if I didn't put CFW on it I would prolly use the psp about half as much as I do now just based on that and it would sit collecting dust.

Ah yes, homebrew. Remember when the original Xbox was so homebrew friendly? Good imes, now why did Microsoft have to make it hard for us to do the same for the 360?

@silvain totally, what they should do to curb the piracy issue is to have savegames save to internal memory and sell non rewritable mem sticks (or better SD, but that'll never happen) or encrypted (to make it tougher to crack) with games on them as well as the download versions, even put out packages of multiple games on the sticks so that people can buy physical games and/or non rewritable backups (which is the only reason I buy the umd versions

I bought a PSP at the last minute before hopping a 15 hour flight last month at gamestop....a used fat one (I'd heard they were easier to put firmware on). Since I couldn't hack it before the flight, I bought Lumines(for the hack) and Loco Roco 2. Both were great games.

Soon after I actually started looking at the PSP library, and I don't think the argument that "there are no games" stands anymore. I'm having tons of fun buying legit games for crazy cheap, I have Loco Roco 2, Lumines, Me and My Katamari, Monster Hunter Freedom, Puzzle bobble pocket, Tekken, and FIFA 08.....all cost under $20. There are tons of games I still want to pick up....Patapon 1 and 2, each under $20....both Worms titles, Little Big Planet(when it comes out) and not tomention the crapload of RPGs I haven't tried yet.

I WILL hack my PSP someday at the end of it's life, especially since memory cards are getting so cheap....but for now I'm really feeling good about my purchase

I haven't hacked my PSP, but I'm also not buying any games. Piracy may be an issue, but the bigger issue is the lack of decent games.

Whats the point? When Sony can't offer me a decent gaming experience on the damned thing, why wouldn't I go to a custom firmware? At least there I can emulate just about anything. The only reason I still have one is because I can do this. I have had a PSP since day one. Admittedly some of my favorite games are on the portable. Lumines, WipeOut Pure and Pulse, and MGS: Portable Ops. But in all honesty the homebrew community made my PSP experience much better, not Sony.

I've had my psp since launch. It's a great portable. I've bought every game I've really wanted, and I've pirated a few. To be honest though, I only pirate older games I can't get anymore. Like the NGPC and Wonder Swan collections and some choice psx games, like Slap Happy Rhythm Busters, Vib Ribbon... and.. that's about it.

And like someone else said... looking at a torrent site to see how many people download the game doesn't mean that all those people would buy it if they couldn't get it. That's just and insane way to think.

and if only they made it so the PS3 could play PSP games. Then we wouldn't have an issue with low development. gaming needs to think more on the big picture. I can play music on my laptop and an ipod...I want to play some playstation games on my ps3 and psp.

Obviously piracy isn't as big as a factor as people would think. DS has much more rampant piracy and it's doing just fine.

huh, I would add a comment but everyone else really summed up my view on the psp.

not enough games from Sony = hacked psp

hacked psp = more fun

if Sony got off their asses and tried = a funner system

and Patapon = the only game I actually play on the damn thing

I have been hacking PSP's for free since '06 (good 'ol LCS + e-loader), because honestly the way sony intended you to make use of their system was retarded.

It was first marketted as a full multi-media expierience, and fully capable of hi-res video playback, but sony never mentioned at all how to load your own movies onto the mem stick in a way that the XMB could detect it, i first learned of the appropriate path from an issue of EGM for god's sake!

Second, and this is a BIG point for me, since second-hand game stores became more common place i have constantly been selling crappy games back to stores to get the good ones, and faithfully holding onto the good/rare ones, so when i herd that the PSP was going to be able to play old PSX games, i wasd jumping for joy, that is untill i found out that they wanted me to buy a PS3, and purchase an additional copy of whatever game you want to play, im sorry but thats bullshit. I have held onto some of my fav PSX games for more than 10 yrs, and now to reward me i have to buy the game again to play it on my new console? no thanks.

I actually diddnt find out about the ability to rip games untill 8 months after hacking my system, i was using the CFW specifically to play my PSX game backups, and ultra-rare games like chrono trigger, and FFVI, and select homebrew like quake 1 and hexen 2.

So overall my opinion is this, if sony had actually encouraged the system to be used to its full potential, and allowed backwards compatability, without having to pay for a game you allready own, i would have been a faithfull sony fanboy

Not only the PSP but the PSone and PS 2 were a pirate's heaven.

I think if the industry wants to stop this problem, they have to create something new, not just data on the disc, but something that makes you buy the game, something that you can be sure is 100% impossible to copy and that is worth the money. Otherwise many gamers out there doesn't mind to play a ROM.
