No sh*t: Dead Space 2 penciled in for 2010 photo

Really? Are people really surprised by this? The story goes that Reuters of all places has "let slip" the fact that Visceral's Dead Space 2 is going to be released next year. EA has never officially confirmed the game, but we all knew it was coming, and I think very few people didn't expect to see it next year.

In any case, the relatively decent sci-fi shooter has been "confirmed" thusly: "Electronic Arts has a pair of horror offerings for gamers. The publisher recently shipped Dead Space: Extraction for Wii, which is a prequel to last fall's Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC hit. Dead Space 2 is in development for next year."

With the amount of media EA released for Dead Space, and with Dead Space: Extraction released for the Wii, there's no doubt that the publisher wants a franchise to come out of this, despite the less-than-blockbuster performance of the original game. So, the question is this: Do you want more Dead Space next year, or was one (or two) already enough for you?

Never liked the first one due to a horrible storytelling and camera.

I knew it was coming but they need to make it far more scary by having a random scare generator

More, I want MOAR.

Fairly tight controls, a unique approach to dispatching enemies and a great atmosphere far out weighted the middling story for me.

Despite its flaws, I thoroughly enjoyed the first Dead Space and would love to play through a sequel. The first one had some tense moments and fantastic ambiance. I was somewhat disappointed when it didn't sell as well as I thought it would, but that can be chalked up to a poor release date IMO.

MOAR PLZ. Really, I could KILL for another Deadspace. The first one did what AvP2 did for me, which was leaving behind little messages to create the illusion of a bigger world that was functioning until it was brought down by monsters. You learned about people and places, things that people did. Even if it was mundane, it was still worth reading. The story was great too, enough plot twists and events going on to keep me excited throughout the game! Extraction was good, but definitely different. It was closer to a movie experience with a nice kill stuff in between story moments twist. Overall, fun puzzles, combat, story, and cinematics made me jizz my pants. Do it EA. Make me a happy man.

Funny when I was playing Dead Space I kept thinking how Resident Evil was around the corner and how much scarier it would be..yeah look how that turned out! Dead Space was pretty damn good, I'm ready for more!

I think the first dead space was fantastic, a really good concept implimented well. Reminds me of Event Horizon setting-wise. A second one could easily work if they investigated the origin of the marker further. Like DaveDude said about the world around you, they could dip into that much further.

I really liked the orginal. I hope they expand on things like zero-g and have a few space walks.

Dead Space was a fantastic game. I would like to see a larger variety of enemies and bigger bosses this time around. Contrary to some other posts, I thought the story was great...really built upon the animated movie Dead Space: Downfall (if you haven't seen it where the f*ck have you been). All I can say is if this game doesn't disapoint and Dante's Inferno is as good as it's looking I'm gonna become Visceral's bottom b*tch...

"I was somewhat disappointed when it didn't sell as well as I thought it would, but that can be chalked up to a poor release date IMO."

If you believe the stats from EA (1.5 million sales and 3 million players), then the second hand and rental market chewed up the sales.

"Relatively decent sci-fi shooter"...WTF?

I didn't know that survival horror is now classified as a 'shooter'. Just because it has guns? Well then FIFA or Madden is obviously a grass growing simulator, because both take place in fields full of...grass!

Dead Space was far more than decent, providing an atmospheric and intense take on survival horror. Dead Space pretty much rejuvenated the stagnating survival horror genre that Resident Evil has all but abandoned.

I enjoyed this game. But it was tooooooooooooo short.

Co-op would be also nice touch if it can bring it. I really like to see two players playing from two different locations (not on the same screen) and the eventual joining of the story arc toward the end.

Not surprised in the slightest, but I'm always up for more decent Survival/Horror games. Not expecting it to be scary, but as long as they take the "survival" part more seriously then RE does now, I'll be happy.

Dead Space was my favorite game of this generation, at least until Demon's Souls came along. It is one of the few games I may play a second time through (especially now that my surround sound speakers have been properly mounted and next week my new 65inch TV arrives!).

That's awesome news. I hope they don't release it in the holyday season again among the big boys. Dead Space was my favourite game of the year, it's amazing. Can't wait for 2!

Extraction was way light on story, it really could have been told in cut scenes in the full game or maybe comic book style like UC2.

I loved Pandorum. It had some definite story-related flaws, but nothing to mar the overall experience. Great acting and atmosphere, and a very cool ending.

@Deadline - I'm on pass three, going for one gun, and the two turret shooter acheivements. God I love that game. It's hard with a game like Dead Space; it manages to tell a decent story reasonably well, and gets lambasted far more than a game with a disposable story that everyone just skips. It's like if you're story isn't going to be dostoyevsky, and your presentation Kurosawa, you might as well make it total crap so people won't even talk about it. Dead Space's story and storytelling is at least 100,000x better than Halo 3, but Haloids don't seem to notice how shitty the storytelling is in those ridiculously boring cutscenes.

Dead Space was by far the best survival/horror game I've played in years. From start to finish it did a great job of drawing you into the world and provided more scares in the 1st 2 hours than we've gotton out of the RE series's past two games. I'll agree i'd like this 2nd one to be longer, but only because as I was playing I just didin't want it to end.

Not sure I agree with your "Haloid" logic. So far, the only two people in this thread who have mentioned not liking Dead Space are Jim and Sexualchocolate, neither of whom like Halo.

I, on the other hand, love Halo, and Dead Space was probably my favorite game this year. It's actually one of the few games that I've not traded in after beating it (twice), I liked it so much.

And besides, how are Halo and Dead Space even comparable?

The first game was excellent, so I'm looking forward to the next one. Few games manage to give me that "creeped out" feeling while still allowing me to wield an arsenal of sick weapons.

How the hell can "The Ripper" gun be topped? It's a freakin' circular saw powered by psychic energy. Or whatever.

Maxed out the achievements and still play it. Might even buy a Wii to play Extraction. Dead Space was my absolute favourite release of '08, no contest. I just hope that with the sequel, they don't feel the need to muck about with any multiplayer co-op nonsense, you can't play survival horror with some mate burbling away in your left ear.

I was a huge fan of the first game, despite it short comings. Hopefully this will be a solid expansion on the franchise (after what was a very ignorable on rail shooter).

Hopefully its changes some core aspects of the game (wouldnt mind seeing no merchant) in favour of more horror / survival aspects.

Terrible writing, spotty gameplay, no character development (considering they seem to be a story driven game), short and more repititous than the original Assassins Creed.

Well, if Halo can do it as a shooter, I'm sure Dead Space will sell for an action/adventure game. The most half hearted and generic titles tend to sell the most anyway.

As long as they disable the objective GPS locator and make a proper map, I'm in. That objective locator took away all the tensions for me since I know exactly where to go. ( oh well, except that "walking on asteroid" level )
