No Rival Schools on PSN now, no Rival Schools on PSN ever photo

If you've been holding out for Rival Schools on PlayStation Network or, indeed, any digital distribution platform, then we have some rather dire news for you. Capcom has confirmed that Rival Schools will not be coming to PSN now or ever.

"To put at least one question to rest, unfortunately Rival Schools will not be making an appearance," says Capcom's Chris Svensson. "There are IP clearances and rights we no longer have (particularly pertaining to voicework/soundtrack I believe) so our IP management group has told us it can't be re-released. I'm sorry as it's one of the ones I really wanted to see be put back up.

"So if you still have that PS1 Rival Schools disc in your collection, it's unfortunately going to be the only way that gets played for the forseeable future."

Rival Schools is a popular fighting game that first hit arcades in 1997 and gained a considerable cult following. Fondly remembered by fans, it's doubtless that a lot of people will be disappointed by the news. Sadly, legal bullsh*t is always the reason why we can't have nice things.

[Thanks, M]

GRRRG FUUUUUUCK YOOOOU.

How can they not own the rights to the voice acting and soundtrack that is in THEIR GAME?

Capcom is getting awfully close to Hasbro territory.

I do in fact have the PSone disc, but no PSone or working PS2, to play it. And now, after reading this post, I really want to. Thanks a lot, Destructoid. You cause pain for fun.

What a shame. Oh well, I guess I need to enjoy the Rival School character(s) in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom!

I never really understood the fascination with Rival Schools, but it does suck that it can't be rereleased for people to try for themselves.

I've been trying to buy a used backwards-compatible one for the last two months, but all the ones I've found have been ridiculously expensive. More expensive than a new slim.

@HEL105: If you still have the PS1 disc, you can play it on any PS3 (with or withough PS2 BC it doesn't matter). Or you can use an emulator on PC.

Issues with IP clearance and rights ownership are always fucking this stuff up. I mean, first they couldn't release Tatsunoko vs. Capcom in the US because it was a legal nightmare, then the expiration of a license with Marvel meant no future rerelease of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 - OH WAIT.

If they really REALLY wanted to, they could renegotiate contracts for rights, but I suspect they know that doing so would probably cost more than the re-release would ever bring in. So unless they get the rights again for dirt cheap, then I do doubt a re-release will happen.

Maybe they could re-make it and just use all new stuff in place of stuff they can't get rights for anymore.

I was really hoping that with Batsu in Tatsunoko v. Capcom they'd be able to put the full Rival Schools up on PSN...damn. Looks like I'll have to continue searching for all my old PSone games to get my Hinata fix now.

Looks like I'll need to go dig up a copy of Project Justice before the price goes up too far. Rival Schools was awesome, but I was counting on them putting PJ up on a download service since I missed the DC era of fighters/gamesingeneral.

I have the PS1 disk and the original strategy guide, but I dont know why anyone would buy a PSN version of a game they already have, sounds dumb to me.

Here go cheaper.

1. Buy a dreamcast for $20.

2. Download RS/PJ bootable iso.

3. burn to cd.

4. enjoy

**bonus points** download other dc era games, including crazy taxi, space channel 5 and the dreamcast fighting library, which includes hits such as SF2, SPF2X, CvS/CvS2, GG, MvC/MvC2.

Did I mention Ikaruga?

Rival Schools is a weird game series for me. It was a game I loved very much because of it's gameplay and style, but the release of Rival Schools in the USA had me infuriated and made me think of Capcom as being lazy about translations and inconsiderate toward American customers. The game had been promoted with the idea of having a create-a-character mode, a mode I was very excited about. When the game was released, this mode was excluded. I had felt that we as American customers, were delivered an incomplete product. I had boycotted Capcom games for quite a few years because of this matter. It's such a fun game in the series, and I still enjoy the dreamcast iteration of the series, but even that version which also had a create a character mode was stripped from the NA release. Capcom really let me down in the late 90's/early 2000s. The fact that they don't seem to be able to do anything with the IP actually makes me a little happy, because now they won't be able to disappoint me with another incomplete game from this series.

Why do great things always get screwed over by audio IPs? Tons of old TV shows having missing audio, replaced crap, or even just entirely cut scenes because record companies and the like want to charge an arm, leg, and two testicles for the rights to put them on the DVD. B@st@rd$.
