...though I agree it's a lame excuse. The "time" aspect is probably true, though; they NEEDED this game out as soon as they could, and online would have delayed it.
And even though online multiplayer would be a nice feature, don't suddenly act like it's omission is a mortal sin of some kind. The game serves it's purpose as a remake, just like Ocarina of Time.
No online games? What the hell is Street Fighter IV 3DS doing in my system then? What about RE: Mercs? Dead or Alive: Dimensions?
Do I think Nintendo's excuse for no online in Star Fox is a bit asinine? Yeah, I do. But the game remains fantastic without the online multiplayer (and, no, Jim, it is NOT a "multiplayer-focused" game any more than Metroid Prime 2 was).
But spreading outright lies and false information about the company and system, and ignoring the games out there that DO provide online experiences, is just plain trolling.
But, by all means, don't let the facts get in the way of your emotional rantings, Jim. Stay classy.
Would you rather have Starfox 64 3D on your game-starved 3DS right NOW or would you have it 2 months from now with shitty tacked-on online?
Come on, people; SF643D is a great game and it's a small sacrifice to make to have it earlier. The same way, I'd give up pretty HD FMV cutscenes to get Final Fantasy Versus 13 out already.
I bet no one would've missed online play had they not come out and said that it didn't have it.
"Would you rather have Starfox 64 3D on your game-starved 3DS right NOW or would you have it 2 months from now with shitty tacked-on online?"
I'd rather have Starfox 64 3D in 1-2 months from now with good on-line.
The DS version did it. It isn't too much to ask.
I got news for you Nintendo: Just making remakes of existing games isn't enough to create a satisfying experience for users.
I dunno. I remember having a lot of fun with the original's 4 player versus one day I spent like 8 hours with it, and that was a far cry from this version's multiplayer mode.
But I spend months playing the single player, getting all gold medals in normal and hard.
So even witout online, the multi seems more of a bonus to me, but not something worth delaying the game more for. (Remember when it was a launch title?)
Now, if they made a multiplayer-focused game in the future, THEN I would see the point of getting it online for sure.
I got news for you Nintendo: Just making remakes of existing games isn't enough to create a satisfying experience for users.
Pretty much THIS.
Well if online means that much to you Jim, than how come you're not playing Street Fighter IV, or DOA:Dimensions, or RE: Mercenary's online. Its not like the system doesn't have online games, its just that most developers are too lazy, to put it in their games. The next big one will be Mario Kart, so I guess you'll just have to wait until than Jim. Not that you really care, its just another thing for you to complain about!
Zelda 3D sold one and a half million units in about 4 months.
I think you should reassess your theory.
"... Just making multiplayer parts of existing games playable online isn't enough to create a satisfying experience for users. The popular online games work in lots of things, so they play well online - and if we wanted to satisfy everyone who bought the game, the costs required for including online support would be vast."
I know its probably a matter of translation, or maybe English as a second language, but this doesn't make a lot of sense.
"For this project what we needed to do was use Star Fox to provide users with a game that shows the appeal of Nintendo 3DS as quickly as possible. We put a lot of effort into the graphics, and if we had included online support then we couldn't have reached this level in the time allowed."
This is just.. Wow.. This generation of (Nintendo, at least) handhelds is obviously going to be the "paid-demo" generation.
StarFox Command's online mode sucked ASS. I hope you remember how terrible that shit was. The fact of the matter was that this would have required time, while the 3DS has no titles right now. There's a massive drought and Starfox 64 3D is suposed to help sate the appetite of the people who only have a 3DS or want to game on it. I know people in that situation. 1 to 2 months from now, you'll have stellar games already: Super Mario 3D Land, Luigi's Mansion, Kid Icarus etc. This was released to hold us over till we get there. Look, I would have loved an online mode too. I'm a gamer and I strongly believe that I should play the games and use the products, rather than have the product or the game play me. BEing a fanboy is retarded and people who try to JUSTIFY the decision by saying a game is better off WITHOUT extra content are only harming themselves. However, while it would have been great for both me and Nintendo if it came out NOW with an online mode, me as a gamer and Nintendo as a company both don't want me to wait a couple of freakin' months while the 3DS has one of the worst droughts in recent gaming history.
I'm not supporting the decision to eschew an online mode, but have a little perspective. Nintendo's going through a tough time right now.
Yes. Three games to play online in the half-fucking-year the system has been out. Two of them fighting games, one of which is missing a good deal of content compared to its console (re)iterations and the other more focused on softcore porn than proper fighting mechanics; the last game being a glorified minigame with what amounts to console DRM.

Yes, literally, there ARE online games for the 3DS. Whether they're at all any good is up for debate, not to mention that ~*~THERE ARE THREE OF THEM~*~
But really, you think $40 for a 2-hour "arcade" game with local-but-not-online MP is ok? Wow...
I do think it's a fair comparison, because, even though Star Fox is quite a short game (but one that has been designed to be played many times, unlike OoT), it's a game that focuses on the single player experience and NOT on the multiplayer experience, like OoT! Both games are acclaimed N64 that received the same upgraded-graphics-3d treatment, so why can't I compare them both?
And I'm not discussing if the game is worth $40 or not. All I said was that the omission of online multiplayer was not a big bummer because that was never the intent of the game anyway.
Yes, the original's multiplayer was great fun. But this essentially just gives you the same experience, 15 years later at only $10 less than it originally was.
And Jim wasn't directly harping on the quality of the game itself when he called it a Tech Demo, but rather that the quote- to paraphrase- said "We wanted the game to look really good and be out ASAP." Which is a no-brainer, until you add in the fact they omitted features originally slated to be in the game to achieve such a shallow goal.
Aren't Nintendo "fanboys" (I prefer enthusiasts... it's a less scathing term) the first to jump on games like Gears and Halo calling them "no substance" despite their graphics? Isn't this pretty much the same thing for anybody who enjoys multiplayer and DOESN'T have people gather together in a room with their 3DS?
The basic gripe is that substance was sacrificed for looks. I can't say I approve.
I think a few people would have enjoyed online, but I think most don't care. Hence all the reviews I've read that no-online is a bummer, but not a major deal breaker. Kid Icarus is going to have online, and most seem to be very unexcited about it's multiplayer. Honestly the only 3DS game that I'll ever play online is Mario Kart 7, so long as that game has a solid online mode is all I really care.
Oh, come on, get with the times!
Graphics are what 'gamers' bitched about last year. This year is about adding online multiplayer to ports of games that never had it in the first place.
In all seriousness, I give you most of mine, so just spend the fucking time and money next time Nintendo.
Starfox has been multiplayer focused ever since Starfox 64 was released with four-player split-screen. It was to add life to a short game, and to further the idea of the N64 being a four-player heaven.
Star Fox Assault on the Gamecube would later have a mediocre single-player to go with its four-player split-screen battle modes. (Adventure was a single-player only game, but it was also an original IP that was rebranded into a Star Fox game during development.)
When I first saw the Star Fox 64 3DS commercials, I did find it weird that it showed four people playing in the same room. Game companies don't care about local multiplayer that much anymore, not when they have online multiplayer to show off. Then I heard that this game didn't have online, and the commercial made sense, even if the lack of online itself didn't.
Like I said, I'm not discussing whether the game is worth the price or not. If you think OoT is superior, that's ok, it's your opinion. Personally, I do enjoy Star Fox 64 more than Ocarina of Time, but that's a debate for another thread. As a fan of the game, the lack of online multiplayer is the least of my worries here.
If adding multiplayer to a game meant a shift in focus, then Dead Space 2 would be a multiplayer focused game. But maybe my perception is different then the others. As someone who is a fan of Star Fox 64 (never had the chance to play Adventure or Assault very much, Command was mediocre), the only thing that I care about in a Star Fox game is the campaign.
I have played the original multiplayer mode of Star Fox 64 but never enjoyed it much. People would just do U loops over and over and over again. If they ever release a multiplayer only Star Fox game, even if it's improved, I don't think I will buy it.
I'm not touching this game till I can pick it up for $10.
