No online in Star Fox 64 3D because of time and money photo

Those who bought a Nintendo 3DS may wonder why their system -- which perfectly allows for online gaming -- hasn't got any online games. Crucially, they may wonder why a multiplayer-focused release like Star Fox 64 3D is local only. Well, apparently the most profitable company of this generation didn't have time and couldn't afford a multiplayer feature.

As is typical of a Nintendo rep, Yusuke Amano tried to make it look like an altruistic decision, claiming they wanted it to be far too amazing, thus too expensive: "... Just making multiplayer parts of existing games playable online isn't enough to create a satisfying experience for users. The popular online games work in lots of things, so they play well online - and if we wanted to satisfy everyone who bought the game, the costs required for including online support would be vast.

"For this project what we needed to do was use Star Fox to provide users with a game that shows the appeal of Nintendo 3DS as quickly as possible. We put a lot of effort into the graphics, and if we had included online support then we couldn't have reached this level in the time allowed."

So, they rushed out the game as a glorified tech demo and didn't want to spend the cash to make it truly outstanding. That's pretty much what he just said. So yet again, my 3DS' online capabilities currently exist only so I can disappoint myself every Thursday morning by seeing what shit they vomit onto the eShop that week.

Seriously, what a crap excuse.

You know, online multiplayer would have been a cool addition, but it isn't that big a deal. Not every game nowadays has to include online functionality.

Oh for God's sake Jim. You whine when the 3DS has no games, and then you whine when they release games too quickly for you. When will you stop whining about everything Nintendo ever does? Star Fox 64 3D doesn't even NEED online multiplayer, since only one cartridge is required to play with other people locally. And for your information, Street Fighter IV on the 3DS has an online multiplayer mode, and I remember hearing about at least one or two other 3DS games that have online modes (don't remember which ones), so the 3DS does have online games.

Sometimes your criticism of the 3DS is fair, but here you're just a hypocrite.

Oh, and you're the guy who was worried about Metro: Last Light being less good because of multiplayer and defend games that don't have proper multiplayer constantly.

I also disagree about SF64 being "multiplayer-focused". The campaign is short as shit, sure, but one will easily run through it five or more times if they didn't play the original game. I've been through it three times and only got a couple of medium-difficulty levels because the alt. routes are pretty hard to access.

Just say "we don't get how to do online because we are Nintendo" and that would have been fine.

I think you are all a bit miss interpreting this shit.
Nintendo wants to do it right when they would include online which takes a lot of effort. Almost every game nowadays has online but its almost never worth your time because its just a cheap cash in. Nintendo didnt want that so they didnt make online. If they where to make a proper online The game would not have been released this year and whit the huge amount of games released on the 3ds that is no problem at all.

Sounds like most remakes right now. They're not even tidying most of these HD remakes up, just upscaling so they can make a quick buck of some chumps at maximum profit.

Damn chumps, always ruining things.

I appreciate your personality Jim, but I wish more of your "news" articles were actually focused on the news and not just your opinion.

That being said, I was pretty bummed to find that this game didn't have online multiplayer. I would have been perfectly fine with an online version of the multiplayer they already have in, but it sounds like they have much bigger ideas. Is a strictly online Star Fox game in the works?

I love the fact that Jim is able to call out Ninty for what they are. A company the lost its spark and just depends on it's Apple-fanboy-esque customer based that will let themselves be resold the same games continuously with no complaint, in fact defending it against the big bad Jim Sterling or whomever else calls it for what it is.

Keep up the good work Jim. Your articles are my favorite to read on Dtoid.

The reason why starfox has no online is because nintendo took a look at their calendar and said "oh shit, we aren't gonna have anything out from June to November! Quick! Tell Q-games to scrap the awesome multiplayer, and get this thing on carts now!" what the hell is nintendo doing? They haven't made 1 in house game for the system yet, they have had a "co devloper" for every first party release so far except for nintendogs, and they have released fuck all for the Wii, so what have they been doing this year?

"Almost every game nowadays has online but its almost never worth your time because its just a cheap cash in. Nintendo didnt want that so they didnt make online."

The game already has local multiplayer, so adding online would hardly have been to the game's detriment. Sure, it would have taken more time and resources, but it isn't as though they'd be throwing multiplayer into a primarily single-player experience like in some cases.

I completely agree that it wouldn't have taken much effort at all to add basic multiplayer, but that isn't what he's saying. While the second quote that Jim included makes it sound like the game was just a quick cash-in, the first one implies that they wanted to include more than just basic online.

It's pretty funny that Nintendo expects us consumers to pay $40 for a portable game in today's market, yet they don't do anything to justify that price point. I can't be the only one seeing the irony in this...

That's fair enough. Somehow, however, I think buyers of the game would have been more happy with "basic" than with nothing...

It could be that the third party that developed Star Fox 64 3D also had no experience in coding for online play.

At any rate, i tend to expect re-releases to preserve the original experience to an extent. Star Fox 64's multiplayer was a small treat, but never the reason I bought the game originally or now.

But, really, all this post serves it to whine and bitch about Nintendo when countless developers will gut online play from titles that are indeed multiplayer-focused on PSP and DS, even 3DS.

BlazBlue Continuum Shift II is the sort of game that NEEDS online multiplayer and SSFIV3D and DOAD have that. All fighters should.

Star Fox? Its not something I'm expecting or wanting so badly.

Do you know how many Monster Hunter clones, to say nothing of Monster Hunter itself, got by on PSP without internet play? A ludicrous amount of them, considering they are ABOUT MULTIPLAYER.

The US and UK are not Japan and its time JAPANESE DEVELOPERS AS A WHOLE got it through their skulls. Online modes for multiplayer games or don't fucking bother with your game.

Star Fox is the least of our worries in the multiplayer department.

It's true that ever game doesn't NEED multiplayer, but considering that Star Fox has somewhat of a focus on multiplayer (If it didn't, then they wouldn't have included multiplayer in the first place! It's also one of the best experiences in the game after playing through the campaign mode!), I don't buy their excuse of "time and money" for not including online multiplayer. And while it only takes one cartridge to play local, what about those who have friends that live far distances and can't play locally? I don't see adding multiplayer as a cheap cash in at all, but rather it would increase it's replay value with simple online leader boards. Nintendo is a very capable company, and considering that this is already a 10+ year old game, I don't buy their b/s excuse.

Reason #4 why I will not buy Star Fox 3DS...First of all, the God damn Star Fox game on the original DS had fucking online play! What a fucking joke. This shit infuriates me. It is bad enough that you, Nintendo, charged me $250 for this piece of shit.

Then you go ahead and try and sell me $40 ports!?! And Star Fox is only a 2 hour game at most! And THEN you tell me that you didn't want to add online functionality because it was too expensive!? Really!?! You fucking liars. You fucking dickhead liars. Why not just come out with the truth, here I will do it for you.

"We at Nintendo are fucked. We're fucked bad. We totally, truly fucked up. We released a completely overpriced piece of shit handheld. We rushed the piece of shit out the door to try and beat Sony. We had no God damn games for the piece of fucking shit. We fart out ports and cheap tech demos instead of real games. We don't even try to give you online multiplayer, which further proves how fucked we are and how far we are behind the competition.

We admit it, we are fucked. Totally, totally fucked. I guess this is goodbye, because we got about a year left before we pull the 3DS from store shelves and admit that we are a completely useless, arrogant, stubborn company who shot itself in the foot, reloaded, and shot the other one."

I absolutely agree with you on that, the complete lack of online does kind of sting. I bought the game because I loved the original, but I know many people who would bought it based on multiplayer alone.

Well at least it does have local play.... Online would have been a huge boon to it tho since a lot of the replayablitly in Star Fox came from multiplayer.

I tend to agree that Nintendo really dropped the ball on something that could have been huge.

So then why did you rush out starfox, a game with a big focus on multiplayer, in the year 2011 when the competition easily places in online multiplayer? It's not a bad game, but no online multiplayer in a game like this is really unacceptable in this day and age.

Why do more than the bare minimum for a full priced game? That philosophy is crap. See EA's latest golf game on PC. GOW 3 w/o a manual.

Game companies clearly want to say a big Fuck You to the consumers it appears.

As someone who owns over a 1000 retail copies of games going back to the Atari era, it is sometimes important to stop and consider what value one gets for one's money. While one's opinion of a game's worth is always open to interpretation, even the biggest Nintendo fan boy among us must realize that $40 for such an old game, albeit with updated visuals and in 3D, is a bit much. I normally cannot stand shoe-horned multiplayer, but Jim does have a point about this game certainly lacking online multiplayer. The standards of gamers have shifted and online for this title would work well. There is no valid excuse, and I submit that you should never feel sorry for a company (who makes money off of you by the way) because of their own organizational problems.

well...I can kinda see where the money problem comes from. Being that they just released a system when this game was in development and are currently making a new system for 2012, they can be tight on cash. Also the fact that this was just one of many projects that Nintendo is making right now. So I doubt they were given the vasts amount of money that Nintendo has. And if I recall correctly SF3D was delayed....so I can see where they are coming from.

But yeah, pretty lame.

@Judas: With all due respect, I'm not exactly sure that Gears of War scrapping a huge manual is really them saying 'fuck you' to anybody. Most people don't care about manuals, and they're kind of a waste, especially since everything you need to know about the game is told to you in the game itself.

@Laharl-KOTNW; it was meant to be played locally because online gaming at the time was not a thing outside of PC's. The times have changed, and nintendo is least willing of the big 3 to adapt and go along with it. I'm not even a big online gamer, but starfox is one game that I feel would work very well with an online mode

Well... I mean, the original didn't have online either. Maybe they're being true to the series.

Also what is it with all of the remakes recently? Did every company realize that instead of making a new game in the series they could just make the same game again? There's Halo, Mario, Zelda, Star Fox, Resident Evil 4 (Although it just keeps coming out consistently on every platform ever)and I think even Deadly Premonition is getting an HD remake, and that sucks because the graphics were part of what made it so great. Then again I will probably buy it anyway. I fear the industry might resort to remakes way too much. It's like the hollywood industry making everything into a movie, from Battleship to Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots. We haven't reached that territory yet, but you know that as long as it sells, companies will do it.
