No online co-op in Fable 2 at launch, dog still a gripping plot device photo

When Fable 2 hits stores this October 21st there will be a notable game mode missing. Gamerscoreblog is reporting that Fable 2 will ship without online cooperative play. In other words, Lionhead are essentially shipping a jelly donut without glaze.

The reason for the lack of online co-op has to deal with Lionhead’s decision to make a few last minute tweaks to it. What was actually wrong with the mode has yet to be explored. There’s not too much to worry about though, as Microsoft Game Studios and Lionhead are targeting to get the mode out within the first week of launch.

While this isn’t the end of the world, I can’t imagine a worse announcement. I was really looking forward to this portion of the game from day one. Luckily, players will still be able to see friends' glowing orbs scattered throughout the game’s world, which means trading and chatting can still happen.

What do you guys think? Would you rather have Lionhead sort out this problem before release? Is this a big deal? I must know these things!

You never get what you're told with Lionhead Studios. It doesn't help that Molyneux is always overhyping everything either.

It's fine. Everyone take a week to learn the game and then jump into coop. No need to freak out.

Its not like its canceled entirely... Id rather play through at least a fair bit of the game by myself to start with anyway. Then if my friend was a jerk i could kick his ass.

I think it's a big deal since it's one of the big reasons to pick up the game in the first place.
If they were making a "few last minute tweaks" why not just put those in an update for later in the week instead?

It's not a big deal. Online co-op is still coming, only a little late.

Hey guys, pay a premium for a proprietary hard drive so we can continue to fix our incomplete games after release!

Peter Molyneaux needs to shut his mouth. Really. The multiplayer co-op was the ONLY thing he showed at E3. And might I point out that multiplayer co-op was a promised feature in Fable 1?

Cancelling my preorder on Amazon now.

That blows, but in all honesty I'd want to build up my player and experience the world a bit and have a little time to affect it before I let someone else in to it to shoot my future wife in the face.

If it wasn't coming for like a month or so I'd be pissed, but a week won't really affect me at all.

Im a friggin Fable 2 fanboy and this doesn't bother me at all. Whats wrong with you guys. One week is nothing. Play the main storyline once alone.

This is at the peak of my anticipated list and while I was mainly going to do "split-screen" co-op more than online, I'm a little ticked off that I can't see how the orb system works right off the bat and how easy it is to jump into someone's game.

Bummer, but I guess I can wait a week.

Anyone who is that bothered by a feature of a game being a whole seven days late should probably spend a good long time thinking how much their existance is really a benifit to the world as a whole.
And then consider suicide.

I personally think this is fine. It just gives Lionhead that extra time to make the online coop better.

I will be gutted if they actually CHARGE us all to download the coop though. If that happens, I spit on you Lionhead and you never see me purchase anything from you again.

I can live without it for a week since I'd like to enjoy the single-player experience before I let my co-op buddies destroy my world.

I guess this is what one calls 'pulling a Molyneux', right?
Sharpless's Avatar - Comment posted on 09/26/2008 23:50

Not a big deal. Fable 1 was single-player and RPGs are generally single-player, so I don't see what the big problem is. Anyone who buys this should be buying it for the 1P experience, anyway. Patch away.

@Redzie
No, the game isn't being released by Capcom.

Doesn't really affect my decision to buy it. Sure I'd like to hop in to co-op on day 1, but as long as it's actually going to be out within the week and I don't have to pay more for it... meh, I'm not going to have a heart attack or anything.

Wat. Well it's still lame that it's not in the "It's complete!"-build but most of us are gonna play online to fuck with each others towns and spouses anyway. I can wait a week to date rape and kill king3vbo's wife.

I will get it anyway and it won't really make much of a difference, but I can't say I approve of releasing a game that is technically incomplete.

Best practice would be to release the game later, in its complete form.

It's too easy to see this becoming a buggy fix a month after release, with excuses from PR flying all over the place.

Like I said, I don't mind personally, but its just bad form IMO.

To be fair, as much as everyone is freaking out now about this being a week late, guaranteed you'd have about the same number of people vocally freaking out if the game was delayed any (And this would make the game delayed further than a week because of the process) so it really came down to a damned if we do, damned if we don't situation. Frankly I prefer this route to the latter, it means I get to play it a little earlier and enjoy some single console co-op a bit as well.

" I can wait a week to date rape and kill king3vbo's wife."

Awesome.

I'm with Neveras, also. Give me the game right away instead of delaying the whole thing. The co-op to me will just be fun for messing around. The most important thing is the single player.

So I'm geussing there's no split-screen co-op.

I guess that might be weird anyway.

Still, if the wife and I want to play together, we can't do it in Fable 2. :(

There's still going to be same screen offline play. That will be the main one used by me anyway.

ONE WEEK for online co-op though!!!??? OH NOES!

Seriously, what a thing to whine about. Would you rather that the ENTIRE game came out a week late? Jesus Christ.

Also... isn't that the same thing that happened to LBP? The co-op level building, except with an undetermined date? Go cry about that instead.

@ Yojimbo

That dog is going to be badass and you know it.

Wow 1 week, and people complain? FFS open the game up, throw it in and play it for a while by yourself, get used to the controls, gameplay, etc and then go online when that portion gets opened up. Or you know have an actual RL friend over like you had to do back in the day, provided you have those and not myspace ones.

At least they identified a problem now, and rather than delay the release of the ENTIRE GAME they put a hold on 1 part of it. Would you rather have this or the opposite, it not working on release day and then having them scramble to patch it?

I'm hoping they don't charge anything for it (they most likely won't).

Although I do worry about whether or not it will take up more memory on the hard drive.

I think they ought to have it before launch, especially since they have been flaunting it. Of course, if there's something wrong with it, it should be fixed, but it's a bummer it won't be out at launch.

its easy, NOBODY should get that game until the change is available... for fuck sake online-co-op is all that jerk peter has been talking about for months and now it won't even be in the launch-version? that is lame as FUCK, just don't release it then you dicks and first finish the game before stamping it on a disc...
