No More Heroes ended up on the Wii, but it wasn't Suda 51's initial choice photo

The Wii may have won the battle, but it looks like it wasn't the first console to come to mind when Suda 51 was looking for a home in which to house No More Heroes. Quoted from an interview in MCV's magazine is this juicy morsel that will give ammo to those of you who have said all along that the 360's fanbase is better suited for this type of game:

“Originally, I’d wanted to make this game for Xbox 360, actually. [Marvelous Interactive boss] Wada-san had information about the new Wii and how the new controller would work before it came out, so that’s why he thought I should produce the game on that format. At the time, I didn’t really understand why, but after seeing and understanding how it works, I think it was a good choice and the controller works really well with the game.”

Does this mean that Xbox 360 owners can hold out hope that Travis Touchdown will find his way onto their preferred console of choice once the Wii hype cools down? Maybe not, but it's still good to know that No More Heroes came within inches of looking as good as it plays. The thoughts of downloadable content and achievements sound nice as well, but then again, who are we to question the intentions of genius? There may not be hope for the one that got away, but it wasn't that long ago that Suda 51 spoke of bringing other games to the Xbox 360 platform. Hey, what about the PS3?

NMH was so good but I think it would have been better for the 360.

agreed. I hate to say it, but I think Nintendo made a mistake not focusing more on graphics. It's the one downfall of a fabulous game and I only wish it could have been fully realized on 360.

I doubt it would have fared better on 360. It probably would have sold even worse in Japan--and aside from some of the niche uber gamers (like the people 'round these parts of the web), I don't see it really holding its own against Devil May Cry, God of War, Dead Rising 1 & 2, and other games in the "hack 'n slash" genre. Wii is a third-party, mature-starved system, and it didn't have much competition, and the Wii crowd was desperate for a solid title that actually rivals Nintendo's quality. Plus, the game uses the Wii remote so damned well.

Hopefully Wada will give Suda the go-ahead for the sequel, because Suda said he wants to make a sequel now and make No More Heroes a (successful) franchise on Wii.

(Cursed lack of edit...)

Come on guys, I know it isn't up to Unreal 3 quality, but have gamers really gotten this shallow as to consider a game like No More Heroes ugly? I don't want to throw out names, but that really reeks of a graphics whore.

Am I the only one who remembers the old days when we characters having facial detail was a luxury?

NMH could have looked better that it does. The Wii's chip set is not to blame for that. NMH doesn't even look as good as some PS2 games.

Actually, out of all three current-gen consoles, I think NMH probably would have done best on the PS3. The motion controls from the Wii version could have more or less remained intact, which is a huge part of what makes NMH special. Perhaps more importantly, the PS3 library would have offered zero competition. PS3 owners all over the world are starved for new games, where as the Wii and 360 are already well stocked with AAA titles.

@Novakaine

Trust me, I'm old enough to remember the old days. Suda's choice of graphics may have been intentional, or technical, as GTA-like games were never known for their stunning graphics.

I love the game, I really do. I just want to see people at least try and make games for the Wii look as best as they can. Looking at graphics may be considered shallow by some, but to me it's part of the total package. Maybe 1st party Nintendo games have spoiled me, but I expect more.

It would have looked better, Sure.
Would it have played better? Maybe.

Would it have sold better-which is what is being implied by 'better suited'?

Doubt it.

Killer 7 released for both the Cube and the PS2, and still didn't sell.

Every time something cool comes out on the Wii, someone's like, "this would be AWESOME on the 360!" and every time something cool comes out on the 360, somebody's like "this would RULE with motion controls!" Isn't anybody ever happy with anything? Be grateful a game this original was relased on ANY system in this age of cookie-cutter shooters and licensed shlock!

I love No More Heroes' cheap look - it fits with its style perfectly. Then again I have a bias, I think the HD + pretty graphics movement is a load of forced crap, much like the early days of forced 3D games.

No More Heroes would not have done too great on the 360. It may be Suda51, but honestly, not many people care or even know who the hell he is. On the 360 this game would've just looked like a mediocre beat em up, out-shined by Devil May Cry 4 which came out in the same time frame. And combat would have been incredibly less satisfying. Call it gimmicky all you want, but it's acting out those wrestling and finishing moves that keep the game from getting stale.

Also, I doubt this game would have looked much better on the 360. Suda51 isn't exactly known for pushing the envelope on graphical detail. Killer7 for example had the graphical capabilities of the GC, which was greater than the PS2's, but he chose not to exploit it, opting for the low detail, stylized look.

So he made the right choice of putting it on the Wii.

Holmes is right. This game would of been a bonefied HIT on the PS3. It can STILL be a hit if they bring it out. PS3 owners are defitnitly starved for more good quality games.

AMEN.

I'm all for pretty stuff too, but damn, let's get some better games on the market first, THEN focus on the details and 1080p and 1080i and comparing screens and- you know what screw all that.

After I finish NMH, I don't know what I'm gonna do with myself. It's so refreshingly different.

This game belongs on the Wii, and it isn't getting ported any time soon.

"HEAR THAT SUDA? YOU WANT MONEY...BRING IT TO PS3"

Yeah, all four of you will probably buy it, and then bitch about it. It's not going to get moved to another console because it's going to take shit tons of $$$ to get the graphics up to speed. If they chose to port it and keep the anachronistic graphical style, you'd all complain about the graphics on the port and lambast anyone who bought it. There's just no winning with the graphicphile crowd.

NMH is fine, "working as intended"

Nice graphics are nice, but it wouldn't have mattered for NMH, imo. It works awesome the way it is.

Maybe if I had an xbox360, I'd think differently. meh. :)

I really wish the game would have stayed in development on the Xbox 360. If you watch the original teaser trailers, the visuals are smooth as fucking shit. The 360 could make the actual game look that good, but the Wii doesn't even come close.

I actually have to go ahead and agree with John Holmes on this one, it should have been on the PS3. The game sold well enough, but I think it could have found more of a fan base on the PStriple, at least in the states.

It's funny that this came up as a topic as I just got this game last night. I think its pretty good (haven't gotten far but still enjoyed it what I had played). The only thing I found hard to enjoy were the graphics. I was thinking they could keep the same gameplay (motion swinging and all), have better graphics (keep the art style but better detail) and give me a analog stick to control the camera if it came out on the PS3.

Doubt it will be ported but at least I get to enjoy the gameplay still.

How very odd--I'm looking at other sites discussing this story, and several are saying Suda is being inconsistent and they recall him saying way back that No More Heroes was originally played for PS2... odd if there's truth to this.

Ironic though that for a year or so people were slamming the Wii saying it had no games, and now that it gets three third-party exclusives (No More Heroes, Monster Hunter 3, and Fatal Frame IV), they're all screaming for them to be on other systems.

Port the game to the 360 or the PS3 and I'll pick it up on release. It's just mindless fun, but it's fun mindless fun unlike other games.

On a side note, Hulk Ultimate Destruction is also a good mindless game.

NMH sold around 5,000 copies in its first week in Japan, sales where even less after that.

It sold around 39,000 in America on its first week, anybody who wanted the game bought it so sales can only go down from here, after awhile I would say total sales for NMH will be around 100 or 150k.

Nothing stellar compared to many of Capcom's other titles, you won't be seeing this on the 360 and you won't see a sequel either, buy it now while you can still find a copy, or wait till its in the bargain bin for 7 bucks.

Though I do firmly believe that initial sales would have been much better on the 360, this is just not the kind of game that Wii fans where killing themselves over, the only thing that sells on that machine is Nintendo's own franchises and minigame collections, everything else can suck it.

Its amazing really, you got this motion sensor garbage, you get a title that tries to use it a unique way and nobody buys it and hence why the Wii is just a fad.

Super Mario Galaxy was fun and all, but it would have been way better if Sega hadn't gotten out of the hardware business, had bought Nintendo, and released it on the Dreamcast 2 with support to control Mario with your mind.

I don't think this would have been a good fit for the PS3. Beacuse you hold the controller with both hands, I can imagine the finishing/wrestling moves being pretty unwieldy. Same goes for the 360, but even worse since you'd have to substitute for a button. With its three-attacks-and-a-slash combos, it'd be like X, X, X... B! I dunno, I really felt like the game benefited a lot from the motion swipes.

But about the graphics, c'mon, are ya'll serious? You really think it looked the way it did because of the Wii? The game looked like a Dreamcast game because it had a shitty budget, not because of the Wii's hardware. We've all seen Wii, GameCube, PS2, and even Dreamcast games that looked better than this. As far as I'm aware, GHM consists of about 40 people. It's possible that the game may have looked better by default just by being on a more powerful system, but I seriously doubt that GHM would have put much more work into it.

And I guess that PS3 owners might be starved for mature original content, but they at least already have all the Tom Clancy games, Ninja Gaiden, Uncharted, Resistance, Burnout, DMC4, etc... However, we've got a port of a Resident Evil game and a middling RE shooter. There's certainly more demand for games like this on the PS3, but there are still those of us who only own a Wii. For us, this game is a godesnd.

The only thing I really don't get is, sans graphics (theoretically), how would this game benefit from being on a different platform?

Had this come to the 360, I would definitely have bought it. While most quirky Japanese games just get on my nerves, Suda hits all the right marks. He's one of the developers whose products I will always consider. I can only imagine how the open world would have been expanded and what improvements would have been made to the already cool graphics. I do wish I had a Wii to play this title.

Give it to Sony and Microsoft, and let them (please) promote the SHIT out of it. The 360/PS3 fanbases would eat this shit up. I'm glad, however, that the game seems to be doing well on American Wiis.
