     No More Heroes

Can't wait to get your hands on No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle? Neither can I, but it looks like the both of us are going to have to wait: the game is slated to come out until early 2010. Bah! I could have settled for late 2009 even. I'm guessing that Suda wants to take his time .. and if that means improvements on some of the things about No More Heroes that weren't perfect, well, I'll wait. Patiently, even.

Personally, I would have preferred playing the game on a standard controller instead of using the Wiimote and nunchuk, but I do admit that the way they work is pretty cool. Since the sequel has been confirmed for the Wii, it's likely we'll see the same control scheme. If you could have changed anything about No More Heroes, what would it be?

Oh god! I can't wait that long! I dunno if I can handle two years of blue balls...

I wouldn't change much. A little better graphics, but even those didn't bother me. I for one, absolutely loved the controls with the Wii. I hate the frickin' Wii, but NMH made me love that fuck waggle box, if for only about 20 hours. I love how linear it was, liked that the sandbox environment was "dry" (makes it less distracting to the story), and I liked that it was short so that I actually had time to play it. It could have been about 5 hours longer though and I wouldn't have complained.

I might actually buy a Wii this time around, as oppose to borrowing someone's for a few weeks. That's how much I loved that game...

(Continues to roll around on the ground, orgasming...)

I'd put it on a different system for starters. No amount of waggle can make up for the fact that he'd sell 4x as much if he put it on the 360 or PS3.

That and while the art direction was charming, it would look a lot better with sharper textures.

What? I loved how you have to swing the wiimote the direction the arrows faced for the finishing moves...

But now that we're on that topic... the wanking/wiimote-shake to charge the sword? That was annoying, get rid of that.

Use the wiimote plus so we can dash past enemies while slicing them depending with side the wiimote is facing.

I loved that Suda refused to put it on another system. He's just ballsy like that. I don't think he needs to drag it to another system because I found that the control scheme added so much character to the game and made the repetative combat a lot of fun.

Also, I just thought of it, how awesome would it be if this time around he stuck with the art style he had in the original trailer?

Sorry for being such a comment whore but I loved doing the wiimote waking charge. It made me crack up laughing everytime. It did kind of get in the way sometimes, though.

I'd add a left-handed control scheme. Sure waggle isn't used much but to pull off the wrestling moves I had to either switch hands or try to go opposite of the screen said. I usually ended up just spasming in every direction and it worked. Not much to complain about really. Maybe add a spear

If patience is a virtue, then FUCK VIRTUE! NMH is in the top 3 of games that people (with Wiis, of course) absolutely must own. Okami and NMH 2 (when available) round that out. :)

And if you already have Okami for the PS2, then give your Wii copy to someone else so that they can drool all over it.

Throw in some more wrestling moves, different combos and beef up the side missions...

Other then that, I thought the game was pretty spot on. I keep reading that everyone wants the graphics upgraded. I thought the graphics was cool.. Maybe it should have been more of a Killer 7 style of graphics IMO..

If NMH:DS is bigger, has an active "overworld" in the style of GTA, supports classic controller, motion plus, and standard Wii-remote/Nunchuck control schemes, and has visual polish on par with other high profile Wii action games like MadWorld and Moster Hunter 3, then I'd imagine it will be one of the best games ever.

If not, then whatever, it will still kick ass.

@Rockvillian:

Better bike/mission gameplay period.

I liked the main missions but the secondary missions were just a drag after the 5th assassin.
Rockvillian's Avatar
Rockvillian at 10/09/2008 16:37
That's where our opinions differ, Wack. For me, it's just better bike physics. I loved the blandness of the overworld, cause not only did it poke fun at the monotony of side missions in GTA titles, but it contrasted the fight sequences in a way that was like jumping from cold to hot water. If they could find a way to use that same sort of magic and make the overworld more entertaining for people, awesome.

I just wish I could have felt cooler driving the bike. It LOOKED awesome.

Yea, I never really saw a need to add anything to the overworld even though everyone bitched about it. Nothing else was necessary.

And ya know, I never really had any problems with the bike...

"No more waggle and pointless in between mission bullshit please."

If the game doesn't have "Waggle" AKA motion controls than what's the point of even having it on the Wii? The motion controls was perfect in the first one as you don't use it for everything, mainly just finishing moves.

In fact if anything I'd say add more "Waggle" AKA motion controls by using 1:1 with WiiMotion Plus. If they just had Classic Controller support then they might as well not bother putting it on the Wii period. Because the whole point to the games existence on the Wii is the so called "Waggle" AKA motion controls!

I would ask for a few more side-quests, that's all. I managed to complete all the side-quests (and get quite a few gold medals) just before approaching the final rank, so they almost got it perfect.

Oh well. I didn't think they would make a sequel at all, so it's really only good news.

Improvements: Better overworld, vehicle control etc

If it was put on another system, the motion control would just get replaced with the R-stick. I don't see how that could be any better than remote swinging.

With the Wii HD pretty much confirmed and I think they would go for a 2009 holiday release with that console, making the game look much better even with the original.

I, too, would like to smack around the pedestrians in the sequel. Not even fatally, just do something silly or unleash Travis' narcissistic and perverted side on some unsuspecting goons. Maybe destroy environment objects with the beam katana or have spontaneous overworld missions that you can engage in by merely appearing at a certain location (i.e. not entering a building and selecting a mission). If any of this at all took away from the pure awesome that was the first game, then forget I even mentioned it. Stick with the waggle death FTW.

I would like the camera to be further behind travis so I could see more of the enemies and the combat to be tweaked more toward the traditional scrolling beat-em-up style of crowd management combat of old (Y'know the actual gameplay part of scrolling beat-em-ups).
ScottyG's Avatar
ScottyG at 10/10/2008 08:00
What would I change? Well, I'd either make the overworld actually matter or replace it with a nice menu system like you have in Travis' apartment. A cool bike with shitty handling does not justify an overworld.

Next I'd add more side-jobs and/or side missions that are actually good. Like Yahtzee said in his review, mowing lawns and picking up trash was a lot more fun than all of the assassination missions that were no different than the storyline stages.

I'd also say do something to break up the inevitable monotony that the game falls into, but I'm pretty sure addressing the above two things would fix that and help the game actually achieve its potential.

I absolutely loved NMH, and I thought the control scheme was brilliant, I wouldn't change anything about that.

I think sometimes people hear Wii and knee-jerk the waggle response, which in most cases, yeah, I agree, but with NMH, no. Don't make that mistake. It would not be nearly as dynamic or satisfying on a regular controller.

The only thing I would change: less bugs.
