No More Heroes: An interview with Goichi Suda photo

No More Heroes. By now, several of you are undoubtedly aware of my burning obsession with the game. The graphical style and concept of the game alone make me want to fly straight to Japan, abandon my heterosexuality, and embrace Suda 51 in a warm, loving, gay hug.

Alas, up until now, information about the game was scant. All we had was an early teaser trailer for the game, and a handful of screenshots, along with a few well chosen hints about the gameplay. Fortunately, IGN has come to our aid with an interesting interview with Goichi Suda; the genius behind No More Heroes, and the game it was inspired by: Killer 7.

Here's all the juicy (and some not so juicy) details from the interview, summarized into bullet points for your viewing pleasure:

Travis Touchdown will be the only playable character in the game, and will stick to using different kinds of swords. In Suda's words, "He's a swordsmaster." Travis can level up via experience points, but more details regarding this system have yet to be decided.

Additional swords can be purchased from Miss Naomi, who is a professional weaponsmith.

The Nunchuk will be used to move, while the Wiimote will be used for attacks. Attacks can be performed by pressing a button or swinging the remote. The game's engine is completely different from that of Killer 7.

Suda: As you've seen in the trailer, the graphics are similar to Killer 7, but in the game the graphics will be a little different from the trailer. It'll be more illustration-based, with 3D maps. I think you'll be surprised when you see the game!

Wi-fi functionality might be enabled, but this is still being debated. The main map (presumably the city of Santa Destroy) will be divided up into ten levels. The player will be able to roam about the city freely, using whatever means of transport they wish to (cars, bikes etc).

No More Heroes might support widescreen and progressive scan. The game will probably be released sometime in 2008 in U.S. and Europe.

That's pretty much all that was revealed. Sadly, Helter Skelter won't be a playable character, it seems. Again, it's not a lot of information, but it is interesting to see that they plan to add RPG elements to the game, combined with GTA-like free-roaming environments. At the very least, No More Heroes sounds more unique than ever. At best, it sounds like it could be among the most innovative and (hopfully) influential games in development for the Wii.

After reading this short but sweet interview, I am definitely looking forward to No More Heroes. It was a tragedy that Killer 7 sold so poorly, but I'm very impressed that Suda 51 is still headstrong about Nintendo. What do you do when you fall off the horse?

And I hope they keep with the amazingly bizarre and awesome cut-scenes that they had in K7. Seeing a supposed prostitute get shot in the face from a child meat distributor was certainly...interesting for a video game.

Ishaan, I thought you were abandoning your heterosexuality for me. Then I wake up, check the front page, and find that you've up and found someone else?

Heartbreak, man.

What can I say? I'm heavily in demand. DMV already asked me to meet him in the shower a couple of nights back. Now the list of Dtoid editors I have to make hot, steamy love to comes to about six people in total.

I did read somewhere that Capcom knew killer7 wouldn't sell but they basically didn't care, they felt it was important that the game would be made, loss or not. By doing so, I'm pretty that Suda51 has build himself a small but loyal fan base that only will grow in the years to come, anyone who played killer7 knows that the man is a genius.

What I'm surprised about is, a LOT of good Capcom games haven't sold. Not just Killer 7, but look at Okami. I just don't get it. On one hand people complain about lack of innovation, and on the other, they don't support it.

did you guys play the same killer7 i played? granted it was beautiful, stylish, and had a great story, but the gameplay almost made that title unplayable!

okami on the other hand.. i guess its just fear of purchasing the unknown, because that game was a treat! played as good if not better than it looked, and anyone whose seen it knows thats sayin a lot.

Resident Evil 4 on the Gamecube didn't sell very well either. This game looks like it might really stick out for them. Damn it looks so damn good...

True, being creative doesn't pay so it's no wonder that companies keep pushing out clones and sequels of what I call blockbuster games. There's nothing wrong with all those games it's just that there so many of them. That's why I hope that the Wii is going to be the system that developers are going to use for experimentation.

It's also true that the controls of killer7 are a bit awkward but it's nothing you can't get used to, I liked it that I didn't have search every corner of every room, it seems to work well for K7, wouldn't want those controls in every game tho. Bought Killer7 and Resident Evil 4 on the same day and think that RE4 is an awesome game, started with RE4 after playing for an hour or so, popped in K7 and never looked back till I finished K7. That pretty much sums it up how much I like K7.
