I have exactly one friend who will probably buy this. He owns NMH but hasn't finished it, so I'm trying to convince him to play through it so he can play the second.
I really want this to sell over a million copies, but I don't know if that will happen. No More Heroes has the appeal of an Adult Swim original, like Metalocalypse or Aqua Teen Hunger Force. In fact, it's marketed in much of the same way. The way it is, people who like No More Heroes 2 will love it, and people who don't like it will hate it/not know what it is.
South Park.
Something that weird rarely goes on to achieve mainstream popularity, but it does happen. I wonder what chances NMH2 has of gaining that kind of success?
Even compared to Bayonetta (which sold some based on good ol' sex appeal, and heavy Playboy advertising), No More Heroes 2's appeal is very small. That said, I'll be promoting the hell out of the game in hopes that it will exceed God Hand status, but I doubt it will.
The again, I haven't even played it yet. Maybe it will "totally suck". If not though, I think it could bring in some dough.
And how come people (not you) keep saying that Bayonetta sold well? Is there some new NPD data floating around that I haven't seen? I'd love to know how well the game did.
Oh well, their loss, not mine.
This Adult Swim promo is very close in style to what the NMH2 marketing is like.
On the other hand, the Wii has a much larger audience for this kind of game than it did back in 2008, especially in Japan. Not only has the install base grown by something like 15 million worldwide, but the Japanese releases of Monster Hunter2 3 and Samurai Warriors 3 really brought in people that wouldn't normally want a Wii.
NMH2 has classic controller support, and the classic controller bundle of Monster Hunter 3 sold something like 350K in Japan last August. I wonder how many of thousands of those consumers will buy NMH2 with-in the next six months?
So looking forward to this... although the promos are weird as all hell...
Ubisoft, didn't you learn anything from the lack of effort with the first NMH game ? By the looks of it, probably not.
That said, they also subscribe to GI, which is why I think a good review from them and other gaming magazines is so important.
The way I see it, the wii will be dead by the middle of 2011. Companies will continue abandoning it this year as losing money is not a goal for most of them. I can't fucking wait!
Also, holy crap, Totally Super Fat Kid looks creepy.
Add an unpredictable, quirky, daring game, and its magic.
Can't wait to see what's next.
Now to wait for the inevitable "When is this coming to a better console" and "The Wii is a dead console" comments to come in.
@kmartkid: I see you been dippin' into that Haterade...
@Gee-Man: Too late...sorta...I think...maybe... *looks up at some of the other comments*...I think you can ascertain whether or not you're correct.
As for me, this is a day-one-dicking. Don't know what that is? Well, you see, I'll be working on the day and the day after this comes out, but I should be able to get it before my shift. I should also have enough time to take the disc out of the packaging, pull my pants down, and.....Nevermind. Anyways, consider this bought.
Also, I (regretfully) agree with Mega (except for that crack about "reviews on Wii games don't matter". Psh!...dick.), but hope Holmes is right in the long run.
ALSO whoever is behind all these mini-trailers is a genius and should receive loads of money and win.
Seriously, though, I want to grab a copy of this, but both Dark Void and Tatsunoko vs. Capcom are coming at the end of the month... I hope I get that grant from college. :P
Y'know, I'm willing to admit that the first No More Heroes was far from the greatest game I have played from a gameplay standpoint... But the style truly makes up for it. For me, it's major draw is simply the violence. Mind you, I am a far cry from being a violent person in my life, even in solitude, but NMH definitely makes it feel super-visceral for me. I really swing my controller to pull off the finishers. On top of that, all the randomness and nerd indulgence adds some very delicious frosting to the cake.
A lot of people picked up the game used this year. I'm willing to bet (and probably lose) that NMH has sold 750K worldwide including used sales. Combine that with the fact that the thousands more fans of 3D hack and slash games in Japan now own a Wii, and you have the potential for the game to sell 100K in Japan over the next twelve months. Throw in 150K from word of mouth, impulse buys from and the eventual price drop and/or Red Steel 2 bundle, and you have a million in sales.
I know, I'm probably totally wrong, but that's how I see it.
GotY 2010, no joking. Of course, the HD Whores and simpletons won't be able to appreciate it, but still.
And I still want a No More Heroes OVA.
