MegaStryke and I recently made a bet that on No More Heroes 2's potential sales. I think that if the game gets a 9 or better from Game Informer and other major gaming news outlets, then it could sell up to a million copies by January 2011. Mega thinks it'll be lucky to sell half that, no matter what kind of reviews it gets, because "reviews of Wii games don't matter".

What do you think? Does this game have any chance of selling a million copies? Do you know anyone who'd like this game that's yet to hear about it? If so, why not email them one of the many, many, many NMH2 video posts we've done here at Dtoid and help me win the bet. If you do, I'll send you cookies (not kidding).

Oh, and hit the jump for more videos. They are great.

Agreed with Mega. A million copies is wishful thinking ;D. Great series, but unfortunately too niche (especially this one, if the trailers are anything to go by).

I reckon a million is possible actually. Word of mouth is a powerful thing, and I've personally *sold* at least 10 copies of the first game to people. And I don't even own the damn thing!

This game won't sell a million copies I'm just happy it exists at all. Day one purchase again for me.

It's niche who's sole selling appeal is weird. It could be a Bayonetta, it could be a Godhand. Could go either way.

This was probably the funniest batch.

I have exactly one friend who will probably buy this. He owns NMH but hasn't finished it, so I'm trying to convince him to play through it so he can play the second.

I really want this to sell over a million copies, but I don't know if that will happen. No More Heroes has the appeal of an Adult Swim original, like Metalocalypse or Aqua Teen Hunger Force. In fact, it's marketed in much of the same way. The way it is, people who like No More Heroes 2 will love it, and people who don't like it will hate it/not know what it is.

This game needs to be out already! I finally haven't got exams till May and the UK probably won't be seeing this gem till March. =[

@ Trebz- You know what also has the appeal of a Adult Swim original?

South Park.

Something that weird rarely goes on to achieve mainstream popularity, but it does happen. I wonder what chances NMH2 has of gaining that kind of success?

It's rather unfortunate hub if it's not a first person shooter it will have a hard time being sold.

NMH is the weirdest of the weird. South Park became popular because it was basically the only show on mainstream television at the time that pushed ratings boundaries, and it's not niche in the slightest: most of the episodes feature current events/popular issues that everyone would be able to relate to.

Even compared to Bayonetta (which sold some based on good ol' sex appeal, and heavy Playboy advertising), No More Heroes 2's appeal is very small. That said, I'll be promoting the hell out of the game in hopes that it will exceed God Hand status, but I doubt it will.

I agree with Mega. I doubt it will sell a million copies, I hope it does though.

@ Magnalon- True, South Park has stuck around thanks to it's ability to keep up with current events and stay "edgy", but the first few years were mostly about kicking babies, talking poo, alien anal probes, and kid's throwing up on each other. It was weird and funny, and people liked it. The same might be true of No More Heroes 2.

The again, I haven't even played it yet. Maybe it will "totally suck". If not though, I think it could bring in some dough.

And how come people (not you) keep saying that Bayonetta sold well? Is there some new NPD data floating around that I haven't seen? I'd love to know how well the game did.

Oh yeah? I bet this game would sell well over a million copies if it came out on PS/360 as well as the dirty Wii.

Considering the fact that Game Informer gave the first game a 6.25/10....yeah they're not going to like the sequel.

Oh well, their loss, not mine.

I really hope that you're right, Holmes. If No More Heroes were to become less of a cult hit like Harvey Birdman and more widespread in its appeal like South Park, that would be amazing.

This Adult Swim promo is very close in style to what the NMH2 marketing is like.

I think a large part of the game's success is dependent upon Ubisoft. If they market it properly it could definitely hit the 1 million mark regardless of its "limited appeal". However, they probably won't market it and therefore it probably won't sell well (sadly).

@ RichardBlaine- That's true. I still haven't seen a commercial for the game, and it's coming out in a week and a half.

On the other hand, the Wii has a much larger audience for this kind of game than it did back in 2008, especially in Japan. Not only has the install base grown by something like 15 million worldwide, but the Japanese releases of Monster Hunter2 3 and Samurai Warriors 3 really brought in people that wouldn't normally want a Wii.

NMH2 has classic controller support, and the classic controller bundle of Monster Hunter 3 sold something like 350K in Japan last August. I wonder how many of thousands of those consumers will buy NMH2 with-in the next six months?

I'm going with Mega. NMH2 would be lucky to get the original's numbers. Over a million would be a miracle for a game with such limited appeal. I don't think a single other niche Wii game (Da Blob, NMH1, A Boy and his Blob, ect.) has been able to break a million and NMH2 certainly doesn't seem like it'll be the one to do it.

How much did the original sell? I would think that this would probably surpass those numbers, seeing as the game seems to be significantly improved over the first one. Anyway, a week and a half can't come soon enough!

Day one purchase for me, and I already convinced a buddy to not only buy the first one for Wii, but he also just pre-ordered the PS3 version on Play-Asia. He's also picking up the 2nd on release just so he can go from NMH straight into NMH2.

It's going to take more than these short video clips to get NMH 2 to get the kind of sales it deserves. I'm sure more than half of the Wii userbase isn't even aware that NMH has a sequel let alone that it is coming out before the end of the month.

Ubisoft, didn't you learn anything from the lack of effort with the first NMH game ? By the looks of it, probably not.

@ Hiltz- Most Wii owners I know have never heard of NMH at all. They've owned a Wii for less than a year, and are just now figuring out what games are on the thing.

That said, they also subscribe to GI, which is why I think a good review from them and other gaming magazines is so important.

I think this game will be lucky to sell a million copies. TBH I didn't really get what the big deal about the first one was. I was meh'ed pretty much through the whole thing. If it were released on the the ps3/360, it would be a 7ish review score at best. The only reason it's ever referenced as a good game is because the wii only has a handful of them in an ocean of crap.

The way I see it, the wii will be dead by the middle of 2011. Companies will continue abandoning it this year as losing money is not a goal for most of them. I can't fucking wait!

NMH was an instant classic if only because it features one of the best soundtracks ever to grace the medium.

Add an unpredictable, quirky, daring game, and its magic.

Can't wait to see what's next.

I believe the first one sold roughly 500k copies. I'm not so sure about 1 million, but I'm confident it'll be able to surpass its predecessor. Still, it's a shame a great game like this will be quickly forgotten by most people. I mean, a game like NMH could theoretically sell a bunch if it just got a bit more publicity.

Now to wait for the inevitable "When is this coming to a better console" and "The Wii is a dead console" comments to come in.

@kmartkid: I see you been dippin' into that Haterade...

@Gee-Man: Too late...sorta...I think...maybe... *looks up at some of the other comments*...I think you can ascertain whether or not you're correct.

As for me, this is a day-one-dicking. Don't know what that is? Well, you see, I'll be working on the day and the day after this comes out, but I should be able to get it before my shift. I should also have enough time to take the disc out of the packaging, pull my pants down, and.....Nevermind. Anyways, consider this bought.

Also, I (regretfully) agree with Mega (except for that crack about "reviews on Wii games don't matter". Psh!...dick.), but hope Holmes is right in the long run.

I'm pretty sure the first game hasn't even sold half that world wide yet... So yeah, reviews don't matter and it will be lucky to get 2k in US and half that world wide.

ALSO whoever is behind all these mini-trailers is a genius and should receive loads of money and win.

Just what I needed for my NMH2 hype machine fix. Aaaaaah, thank you much Mr. Holmes.

Y'know, I'm willing to admit that the first No More Heroes was far from the greatest game I have played from a gameplay standpoint... But the style truly makes up for it. For me, it's major draw is simply the violence. Mind you, I am a far cry from being a violent person in my life, even in solitude, but NMH definitely makes it feel super-visceral for me. I really swing my controller to pull off the finishers. On top of that, all the randomness and nerd indulgence adds some very delicious frosting to the cake.

@ zanthox- Thing is, NMH went out of print earlier this year, and used sales don't get counted by the NPD.

A lot of people picked up the game used this year. I'm willing to bet (and probably lose) that NMH has sold 750K worldwide including used sales. Combine that with the fact that the thousands more fans of 3D hack and slash games in Japan now own a Wii, and you have the potential for the game to sell 100K in Japan over the next twelve months. Throw in 150K from word of mouth, impulse buys from and the eventual price drop and/or Red Steel 2 bundle, and you have a million in sales.

I know, I'm probably totally wrong, but that's how I see it.

i had to watch this again. this trailer is awesome. it definitely would have been a better game than what was released. The hordes of enemies in the cramped alley actually look scary. So many of them, it doesnt matter how big your gun is. Also, its no wonder this game got pegged for racism early on, there's not even a hint that the Africans are infected with Las Plagas, especially if you know nothing about RE. The trailer simply shows a jacked white dude murdering and beating up black people, aha rediculous.wireless speakers / mirror balls / burj khalifa / new citroen / new ford / new kia / new lexus / new mitsubishi / new peugeot
