No mod tools at launch for PC version of Fallout 3 photo

PC people like to make stuff for their games – especially fans of Bethesda games like the Elder Scrolls. Recently in an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun (via 1UP) vice president of marketing Pete Hines at Bethesda said that Fallout 3 would not ship with mod tools like Morrowind or Oblivion did.

The reason for the lack of a tool is fairly simple. Bethesda wanted to do it, but the release timeframe of Fallout 3 got in the way. "We need to get the game done and out.” Hines remarked before adding, “It's not to say we won't do it. It's that right now we have an enormous amount of work to do, for three platforms and all these different languages to get it out around the [world].”

Hines wouldn’t rule out the possibility of Bethesda designing tools for the game later down the road. Interestingly, Hines dodged a question regarding the lack of mod tools as a way to encourage Bethesda paid DLC. Hines simply reiterated that tools take awhile to create and therefore will not be available at launch.

[Thanks Brian!]

After seeing the game suffer from a case of the Oblivions (enemies running straight for you, standing in place during combat out in the open, zooming in when talking and pausing everything else around, etc.) the mod tools were my last reason for picking this game up.

Looks like I'll be waiting a while then.

Well... There goes 90% of my interest in this game. Oblivion was a pile of shit only made decent by the mods.

That's horrible. Bethesda has always released mod tools for the Elder Scrolls series, and it adds so much replayability to the game. I really hope they follow through and do release them sometime.

I don't know why people are getting pissed about this. The mod tools will be made.

"[b]Bethesda wanted to do it, but the release timeframe of Fallout 3 got in the way.[\b]"

That should be enough. Mod editors are pretty commonplace in their games. I assume launching on 3 platforms at the same time could cause a problem. Give 'em a chance before you piss all over them.

Sweet! Now that I have an excuse to hate this game other than perceived differences from the beloved originals, I can go back to editing Diablo screenshots to be darker and filled with nothing but necromancers. Nothing worse than having to wait till a game comes out before I judge and dismiss it.

@heretrix: I don't give developers the benefit of the doubt anymore. I've been let down far too many times. Until they say 100% for sure I'm going to be pissed about this news.

No where in that interview did he say mod tools were 100% confirmed. In fact:

"Right now, we can’t say definitively “there will be mod tools,"

Good luck trying to sell DLC to PC gamers, especially if there aren't any mod tools out when it starts coming.

I wouldn't be surprised if, a few months after release, they state that the way the game is made doesn't lend itself to modding so nothing will be coming out.

they said this months ago.. and if this being based off the oblivion engine & file system.. even if they dont release the tools in the future (which I can bet my nuts they will) but if they dont.. someones going to crack this bad boy to allow modification. There are NO limits in the pc universe.. especially with a single player game.

Moto what do you mean? There are assloads of custom models for oblivion, levels, armor, weapons, hair styles, facial styles, body types.

I read the interview earlier this morning and was extremely disappointed. I understand that mod tools take time to develop and release, but until they do I won't be touching this game. Which is fine I guess, my loss maybe but Bethseda has a track record so far with their games where mods fix almost everything that they did wrong. Which is usually a lot.

I have a feeling I won't be missing out on too much if I wait a year, upgrade my PC, then get the game after mods have been released to fix everything.

That's fucking pathetic. They're holding it back so people will buy the Microsoft BS DLC.

There goes the argument that Fallout 3 would be made decent by the modders. People will just have to swallow the amazing user interface, "reduced" level scaling and overall crappiness of the game without any mods.

Hurray.

You make is sound like the game isn't going to get any mods for a while. This is the internet, I'm sure there will be a awesome "change everything around" mod within the first few months.

Oblivion was a good game, but with mods it was an amazing game! You cant control content on the PC side like you do with consoles. Bethesda will make Mod tools, or some one else will create it for them. Sharing content/code is easy and encouraged in the PC world, hello bit torrent.
