No Little Big Planet demo this year, look for coal in your stocking photo

Nearly everyone agrees that Media Molecule's upcoming PlayStation 3 game Little Big Planet looks damned cool. But just watching the videos or reading about the game doesn't really give you a good feel as to just what in the hell the game is truly about. Everyone should have gotten their hands-on the game this fall, when Sony was supposed to release a demo of the game.

Santa must hate you, because it ain't happening. Speaking to MTV Multiplayer's Stephen Totilo, Sony's Ron "Lesser Spotted" Eagle breaks the bad news saying, "I can officially confirm that there won't be a demo this year." He then goes on to say that he's played 30 of the games 50 pre-loaded developer main levels, and that they were fun. How cruel.

I can officially confirm that this news saddens me, and I used a particularly vulgar string of words upon hearing it. I'm not sure how much longer I could wait for the game, before me and three friends are forced to roll logs and fruits into Sony's offices.

I’m still occupied (and will be for some time to come) with all the great games of 2007, so I can wait.

Toad, what makes it so good? I love that it is based on coop play and I love that you can make your own levels, but in the end aren't you simply playing a 2-D side scroller?

Buck is right in that the game has 2D gameplay.

I am constantly amused whenever I think that if Nintendo had released this game, everyone would be calling it too "kiddy." Since Sony is releasing it, I guess it's not.

2D is a collection of pictures stacked on top of each other to create an environment, all while staying at the same angle. 3D uses models which can be viewed from any angle.

Every time I see a video on it, I always see characters running left or right and jumping up and down (a side scroller). I never see an over the shoulder view or first or 3rd person view or any view which shows the models from different angles (outside of cutscenes possibly).

So yes, I ask again, isn't this just a 2D side scroller at it's core?

Oh well, at least I wouldn't be able to play any potential demo for lack of a PS3.

But, LBP is not a 3D platformer. It's 2D.

As for perspective, everyone has their own preferences. I, for example, don't like 2D side scrollers. I also don't like JRPG's, platformers, or sims. Mass Effect was a great game but I know lots of people who didn't care for it. I don't think you could like a game that didn't come on Blu-Ray, though. Am I right, AB? ;)

@BuckF1tches: Sidescrolling doesn’t necessarily mean 2D. If you closely watch the video footage they’ve shown so far, you’ll notice that items can indeed be placed in the third dimension (that is, closer to and further from your screen, you get what I’m saying?) So yeah, most of the movement is in two dimensions, but that’s like saying that Super Smash Bros. Melee is 2D. If the character models aren’t “flat”, and objects can move into and out of the screen (again, figure of speech), then it’s 3D.

I'll wait. I'd rather have a great game that performs and plays well than one that is rushed to meet some preliminary release date. Its done when its done. I feel the same way about Metal Gear, get it right the first time so you don't have to release a path a month after you start selling the game, /cough Ubisoft /cough.

I think I've spent more time with my out of state relatives this year than the amount of time I've had the PS3 turned on in 2007.

@Bronx, I stated in my previous comment that it looks like it has 3D elements, but not in gameplay. However, I stand by my statement that it is a 2D game (in terms of gameplay). You would say Halo 3 is not an FPS just because it's not in 1st person during the cut scenes. 2D and 3D can mean different things to different people, I suppose. However, since the angle never changes, we never actually get to see the depth of the models and the environments. Even 3D movies are actually in 2D (they just use effects to make it feel like 3D). LBP looks like it is in 3D, too, but since they never change the angle of play, we can never see 3D characteristics of the models. For that reason alone, it looks "flat" as 2D is often described.

Yes, it is a 2D side scrolling platformer... a very very pretty one. But it's still 2D no matter what the dev or Sony says, simply because they never change the angle of view.

I'm kinda with Buck on this one. It seems like a fantastic idea on paper, but I've yet to see anything that makes me think this it'll actually be fun to play...

Out of the four or five videos they have shown, none even looked that interesting. The recent VGA video was even worse. What exactly was the fun or playability in the "boat stage" video?

its a platformer, a puzzler, an art experiment, a physics experiment, a sandbox. it just seems that if you're not at least a bit interested in this game you likely have a lack of imagination, and creativity (or at least motivation to be imaginative/creative in your gaming). a game that lets me loose to customize just about everything about it (with no coding or programming experience!) sounds like the ultimate playground, and one of the best ways to spend $60. i'm almost glad there'll be no demo. i think i'll be more happy with the complete version being my first taste of LBP.
