No LAN or dedicated server support for Command & Conquer 4 photo

The hot button issue for PC gaming as of late has been LAN and dedicated server support. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, StarCraft 2 and other games are ditching it.

So what about Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight? Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but on top of the fact that you need to connected online at all times while playing, Command & Conquer 4 won't have LAN or dedicated server support.

The reason being, as lead designer Sam Bass put it, is because of the global player progression system. This system is "across single-player, multiplayer and skirmish and all the information is stored in a server. So if you go to another machine -- friend’s house, Internet café -- whatever, you can login with your profile and all the stuff you’ve unlocked is accessible to you there. It all lives on a server so you can’t really do dedicated servers with that."

It's not all bad news in terms of multiplayer, at least. EA Los Angeles has "completely redone the networking back end of this game." The previous infrastructure that was in place was getting really dated but this new system is "a lot more solid, a lot more modern. There's a really solid networking and just sort of getting into a game is much easier then it was in the past."

I've said this about SC2 and it probably applies here as well.

You have to be signed in to whatever service EA will use (like with Battle.net in SC2) but when the game is actually going the packets will travel locally. I really don't think EA would be hosting servers for everyone to use, it's probably peer to peer so while it's not called LAN mode the traffic actually goes though the LAN but you also need to be logged in online while playing because of all those stats and that player progression thing.

This is what i was afraid of. Modern Warfare 2 has set the precedent for this. I dont want to call dooms day or cry that the sky is falling but i think this might mean the beginning of the end of dedicated servers. I mean its gonna take time, but still. Except valve. i cant see why they would feel the need to switch.

Still bullshit, most lan parties don't involve internet, mostly because a lot of them are rented out warehouses and buildings where there is no internet to hookup to.

Okay, so much for dedicated servers. But no LAN? Why the fuck not? Is the game not going to play (ala Ubisoft's new DRM) unless you are connected to the internet? Does it not store your info on the last machine you played on?

I say fuck this bullshit. PC gamers should protest these games so publishers will quit forcing this faggotry on them.

and all of this for the pathetic exp system, if you ppl are thinkink that "lvling" in C&C4 is hard the you are all wrong, the lvl cap is 20 and u can get there in 2-4 hours, im not kidding, getting to the lvl cap is way too easy, and once you get there, there is no prestige-mode like in MW2, you will stop getting exp and then you'll see how useless this system is, specially since it requiere a constant internet connection only for this crap, the game is god awful in everything, i hope it fail at selling so EA will go back to the old C&C system, i'll pirate this game, play the campaing with some sort of crack and then unistall it

Ok, I know i'm going to sound like a blizz fanboy or whatever, but i have to stick up for blizzard on the issue of SC2 and LAN.

Unless they completely changed their plans since they told us how Bnet 2.0 was going to work during last blizzcon, you CAN lan it up all you want. Just start up the game in offline mode, and you can play all the games you want to without an internet connection, however none of your stats or achievements or whatever will transfer to your actual bnet account since you wont be signed in. So....yeah, not to worry about stupid bullshit ubisoft style DRM, unless of course blizz has changed their minds. I dont' get how these companies are expecting to see any longevity out of their games on pc though, if they ever decide to shut down the servers we basically get a big FU for the money we've invested in the game and possible DLC.

Also if you are in the SC2 Beta, feel free to add me and kick my ass.

bnet2.0 info = Kagai.Kagai

@Fossegrim its not hate against hate Lan or dedicated servers. its just that having that implies giving people access to server creation files/program, which means people can crack them to allow pirate versions of the game to be used for multiplayer purposes.

piracy is the one and only reason they ditch dedicated server/Lan support.

it makes me laugh every time i see them saying they do it so they can store your progression on their global servers or something like that, how in the world does that imply that you cant have dedicated server/Lan support? who the fuck do they think they are joking with?

seriously, show some respect for your costumers and say why you make such decisions, or at the very least shut the fuck up and dont lie like if people were retarded.

RTS games usually don't have high enough player counts to warrant dedicated servers. I can't think of any that didn't use Peer 2 Peer.
Wedge's Avatar - Comment posted on 02/19/2010 18:43

Yeah anyone complaining about lack of dedicated servers on an RTS has never actually played them. There has NEVER been an RTS with dedicated servers afaik.

They're all made for LAN play though, it shouldn't be hard to just have an "offline" mode that allows that minus whatever online jibberish they've put in.

PC gaming is not dying...they're killing it!

Besides SC2, which apparently will support offline gameplay, are there any alternatives to play a decent RTS locally?
Res Judicata's Avatar - Comment posted on 02/19/2010 18:54

Hmm I wonder if no dedicated servers means the game will only be hosted locally (like on one of the players computers, Ala SC1 / WC3) or if there is still possibility for EA servers hosting the games which would even out lag and make cheating less of a problem (AFAIK that's what SC2 does?)
Toadofsky's Avatar - Comment posted on 02/19/2010 20:25

@ Eduh;

that's the problem. Companies these days, especially game companies, seem less and less interested in doing the most important thing of all, caring and serving your customer.

And that is what will bite them back on the long run.

There's no net code that can make a p2p connection better and more solid than a dedicated/LAN one. I wish they would stop treating us as a bunch of idiots and just be honest and tell the real reasons. I can at least respect that. No need to insult me.

This is all because they are trying to avoid piracy. If they put out a server of any type it will be cracked and allow playing without buying the game. I sure hope this trend doesn't become the norm.

"PC gaming isn't dying, they're killing it!"
YES! Exactly! These idiots whine about piracy and decreasing sales, and it's because these morons keep pushing away customers. The only company still worth buying games from seems to be Valve and Bioware, they actually make quality games and care about their customers wants and needs.
At most, I'll probably get this crap when it's $5 or less in the bargain bin. Seems to be the place where most games belong nowadays.

@Linh Nguyen: You're a complete dumbass. Pirates will play this game LAN or no LAN. I usually rent out a warehouse (without an internet connection I might add) and hold a large LAN party of about 100 people. Removing this rather commonplace feature only hurts EA and they will most likely not be getting my money, nor the pirates who will still be playing this game.
It's complacent idiots like you who contribute to this crap.
