No LAN for you: StarCraft II won't have local support photo

StarCraft II will not have LAN support.

Speaking with IncGamers, Blizzard’s vice president of game design Rob Pardo made it spectacularly clear that players won’t be able to play against each other the old way -- without the Internet. Instead, players will have to use the revolutionary Battle dot Net service to host, create and join matches.

“We don’t have plans to support LAN,” Pardo said shortly before putting the statement in stone with, “we will not support it.”

This, of course, comes with a caveat: IncGamers was speaking with a panel, and the other two guys, producer Chris Sigaty and lead designer Dustin Browder, weren’t so sure. They said Blizzard was still discussing it before Pardo answered.

Despite the disagreement within the panel, we’re sure StarCraft II won’t support LAN for a couple of reasons. First, Pardo knows. Second, this is the year 2009. This thing called the Internet lets people do all sorts of wild things like look at porn and play RTS games over it. Pretty hip, really.

This, to me, seems a spectacularly bad decision. Isn't Starcraft's LAN popularity one of the major reasons why it as remained hugely popular?

Piracy is a bullshit reason, it'll still get pirated out of the ass like most big games but Starcraft 2 will sell millions upon millions anyway (though potentially a lot less after this announcement).

WoW good game blizzard, this is one of the best ways I think possible for blizzard to piss off their fans and lose money because of this. Where I live there were lots of people who played Starcraft and Warcraft 1,2 and 3. Mainly Starcraft though, and about half of the games they played was big lan based battles. I am sure that a lot of starcraft fans will be extremely upset over this. This is one of those Perfect lan party games, I was actually thinking of picking it up and I not real big into Blizzards RTSrpgs, but no lan = none of my money. Only full time online game from blizzard I will accept is World of Warcraft.

Screw this. That is seriously horrible news. LANing is something I've begun to do more and more frequently over the past 5 years. While recently we've stuck with FPSs it all started with RTS, and with AoE II being a huge bitch to get working Starcraft was always a nice second option.

Yep this is retarded. Of course, I'm sure someone will find a way around it but it's another step that we shouldn't have to take for basic functionality.

that sucks. I was introduced to starcraft at a lan party. that just ruins the whole feel for me...

Well with all these negative comments on pretty much every site that has reported this story, I think its only a matter of time before Blizzard realizes its mistake. Here's hoping they bring back the ability to install "spawn" versions on other PCs like the original.

This is one of those things I feel I should complain about but would probably not actually use.

@crowmagnet: I'm pretty sure they got rid of that around Diablo 2 and Warcraft 3. I can't speak for the latter, but I'm fairly certain you can't stuff a demo version of D2 onto someone else's machine. Relevant because the first game allowed you to, so...=\

Here's hoping they backpedal! Didn't it happen with some game and DRM some time ago?

I think Blizzard will probably realize they fucked up when a pirated version with LAN support is downloaded by everyone ever.

Aren't they planning to release a fwe Starcraft 2 games with the different campaigns and new features?

I wouldn't be surprised if LAN functionality popped up as an "exciting new feature" on one of the future releases.

all theyre doin is forcing someone to write a client to emulate bnet between 2 or more puters, cuz thts wuts gonna happen. peeps gonna want 5ms latency, AND DAMMIT, they GONNA GET 5MS LATENCY! sure, it'll be alotta work, but i think SC peeps ARE THAT DEDICATED. hell blizz may do that for tourney play or somethin once the bitchin gets too much for em.

The only time I ever play RTS in multiplayer is over LAN. This is a pretty bullshit decision. The houses of people I know which are big enough for a LAN party don't have a good enough internet connection to support 8 people playing together over Battle net, which means this game will be a no-go.

I couldn't give two shits about this.

Someone will make a lan program for it.
