According to a post by Blizzard employee “Bashiok” on the official World of Warcraft forums, the art of PK’ing will be highly discouraged by Diablo III’s game mechanics. A poster brought up the issue because of his concern with Diablo II’s interface, to which Bashiok replied: We have a large focus on cooperative play for Diablo III, and the mechanics and design decisions related to multiplayer are likely going to be based on supporting and encouraging it as much as possible, and not breaking it down.
That doesn't mean that PvP won't have its own focus, but those are details and features we aren't yet discussing.
To me, that sounds like Blizzard isn’t going to change anything about the old system. Having to run back to a town just to toggle abilities is a bit bothersome, but I don’t think rampant PK’ing is what Blizzard wants with their new title. I’ve read about how out of control “griefing” is in Age of Conan, and while hilarious, it seems like a pretty nasty problem for new players. Perhaps Blizzard just wants its potential players to purely focus on looting and gathering items like the gnomes they want us to be. No word has yet been received on how much players can spam chat boxes, offer a dual, or make characters grunt. [Via videogaming247]

Even if Blizzard was taking a more active stance against griefing, trolls would find a way to do it. Hence why I only bother playing online with people I know.
Hence: Passworded rooms. Problem solved. This problem was solved before it was even brought up!
Hopefully they make PvP a whole different thing. If I wanted to do Pvp I'd play WoW.
I hated that in D2 when people would just go hostle and "tele" into groups trying to Pk them but as noted password protected room FTW!
It's kind of sad if you use WoW as a pinnacle of PvP. Few MMO's have a worse PvP that WoW's does. I hope the focus for this game is PvE though, as that's traditionally been by far the strongest part of the series.
im actually the opposite of mix
i loved it when high level dude came into a room full of people 20-30 levels lower then itself, only to wind up leaving the room a sad panda cuase they used teamwork to kick his ass repeatedly at the same time as completing a quest
There is a PvP game with heavy emphasis on combat and some stats to work on already: Call of Duty 4.
Seriously Im a trammie at heart and since then and usually only games specifically dedicated to PvP get it right and even then they might fail ( i.e. Guilds of War requiring immense grinding for effective PvP at the initial release ).
Co-op is also never getting enough emphasis, so good for Blizzard....now lets hope they keep the minimum system requirements modest.
I suspect that there will be no fewer than seventy-four petitions against this decision.
I just hope they are able to get at least 8 players into the game again. The cap of 5 would be acceptable if it doesn't play well with 8, but cmon.. ALSO we neeeed some flipping multi-core support! Lets go blizz, get back on that horse!
i kind of hated that you couldn't surprise people with pvp in diablo 2 (had to go back to town, going hostile closes town portals, etc....) as it added an interesting element of trust to an already tense game in the first Diablo. What I think should be done is this: set a game, from the start, to either allow or disallow pvp, and then allow "going hostile" from anywhere. have there be a penalty for dying by another player (I don't know what it is now, its been so long since I've played PVP diablo, but maybe lose a percentage of gold to the other player, even from the stash, or a portion of XP to the other player (could be determined by the player who creates the game?) and of course, the ear trophy items. I think that would be the best way to please everyone.
probably also good to have a set level difference cap, say, a player must be within 5 levels of another in order to go hostile.. the best way would be to allow this to be set by the game's creator: don't like those rules, join a different player's game.
That noise made when someone goes hostile on you is unforgettable. I hope Blizzard can find a nice balance with those who do like to PvP.
*sexes in the champagne room*
Griefing has never been funny and will never be funny, I will never understand why people are so amused by a group of assholes who do nothing but ruin the game for everyone else.
Oh right, cause its not happening to you, if you where the newbie being griefed then you would be bitching as well.
Why is that there will always be a group of people whom get their hands on a game and their first thought is "how can I ruin this for everyone else?"
I WANT DIABLO III NAOOOOW!
Getting PK'd means nothing in Softcore. However, I have already lost a Level 50+ Necro in Hardcore with a hostility glitch back in one of the previous patches.
Pissed me off to NO end. But, as said, passworded rooms fix this simple issue.
