How long has it been since someone last talked about Microsoft's upcoming Natal? Too long! VideoGamer has kept the conversation alive by having a discussion with Halo 3: ODST producer Alex Cutting about where Halo is going to inevitably stand with the motion control tech.
On the subject of Halo supporting Natal, Cutting says "we are committing to only doing it when it makes sense. We are not going to produce a gimmicky feature that just takes advantage of motion controls when it doesn’t feel right."
"We’re going to make the games we want to play. We’re not going to make a feature that’s not fun," he continues. Cutting also brings up the excellent point about how before the original Halo, people weren't sold on the concept of dual stick first-person shooters, and he thinks Natal may be the same way.
With so many developers coming out to say their games won't use Natal in gimmicky or otherwise meaningless ways, I sort of want someone to tell us they plan on doing the opposite. Are any developers out there making a Natal mini-game collection? Now is the time to say so, before we get angry.

"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
What?
I think what he's saying is that while the PS1 had them before the Xbox with the original Dual Shock, they weren't completely sold on the idea until Halo legitimized it.
Maybe point at the screen? have a trigger in your hand or a prop rifle?
In case you're referring to dual stick shooters: no, it didn't. Halo just legitimized them and made them popular.
The PSX had a handful of Dual Stick shooters approximately 4 years before the Xbox was even released.
OH my!
Yes. Yes, I am a PC FPS fanboy. So what of it? Wanna fight about it?
yep if there was anygame that would get "most" of the 360 users with natal Halo was it.
well so much for natal
I agree PC mouse and Key board rocks, exspecially on very complex games like mass effect.
What's Microsoft's killer app for Natal going to be? You're in the Movies 2? Viva Pinata Waggle? Bajoo-Totie?
If Bungie won't make an FPS that does away with the traditional controller, I don't see why we should buy Natal. Natal should be able to track pointing movements accurately enough to be used to control an FPS, if it can't do that then I see little potential in Natal for games I am interested in.
Think of me as an IR pointer FPS fan. I feel FPS's were inherently built to be played by pointing an object at a screen, and have a strong willingness to spend lots of time with good multiplayer FPS's with this feature, but have seen zero games that are quite right. The Conduit fell short only because it needed a few more multiplayer maps with good variety and the ability to bring a guest online with you (and some local multiplayer support). Didn't even need Wii speak so long I could play it with a friend that's in the same room.
Though Seriously, i can agree with the idea of of not making motion controls, for the sake of just having them cause it IS just a gimmick then... i mean, there are quite a few wii games that have motion controls, but at the same time play better when using a classic controller... frankly though, it does feel like their is potential in natal that might be worth exploring... afterall, i can recall a time when true VR was considered the sci-fi future of games, and games that need no controller but your own body is a step in that direction.
Not to mention that one of the best ways to get people to experiment with new tech is to find a way to make it popular, which is something that AAA game titles are good at. Sure it may not work out, but we never get anywhere without taking that first step and trying; if everyone is too afraid to try new things then we never move forward.
@Retrofraction
Y'know i'm kinda reminded of when Sony came out with the eyetoy and eye of judgement... First thought that came to my mind was that the eyetoy would have been a LOT more successful it they had found a way to implement PRE-ESTABLISHED card games instead of trying to invent a new one... Like figuring out how to make the Eyetoy read Magic the gathing cards or yu-gi-oh cards and use those instead
