When people hear the word "piracy" they seem to vomit blood, like that was the rotten cause of the evil in the world, forgetting that there's also a bunch of piracy in consoles and that A LOT of the pirates would not buy the game, thus they are not making publishers lose sales. And that most people that pirate PC games are probably also the ones that pirates console games.
I will probably write a blog about it. I'm really tired of this ignorance.
Perhaps you should reread my comment (if the idiot comment was addressed at me). I did not say that it was just as easy to mod consoles as Pcs. I was just commenting that it takes a little bit more work to pirate Pc games that what Mcmax3000 was suggesting.
Reading comprehension is a good thing.
I'm a PC gamer and last time I pirated a game was Crysis 2 because they did not release a demo to see if my rig could handle it, it did and so I went out and bought it.
I LOVE PC GAMING AND I BUY GAMES, there you have it a willing and paying customer. Your loss Ubisoft your loss...
Instead of selling ghost recon online as a great pc exclusive, he sells it as "this is all you get you theiving bitches!"
And people that thinks that PC pirating is easy are really wrong, downloading a safe, with a good crack is hard because of the other many hackers that put shitty releases.
So yeah, I mean... fine, fuck Ubisoft. I get that, they've never really seemed to be entirely comfortable with the PC market and it's not surprising to see them exiting it. Just... don't be surprised when it doesn't end here.
It will be free to play on PC! The pirates have won! now they can move out of their parents basements/garages get a job and maybe use their spare time doing something constructive instead of infecting torrent files with trojans and cracks that won't work with new game updates. Thanks Ubisoft, you've just made a few pirates unemployed :)
I am the customer you want. I do however refuse to spend money of buggy pieces of shit that limit my experience. You want my $60 for a game, how about you develop a reputation of:
Making sure AMD/nVidia have drivers optimized for your product before launch.
Your servers aren't crashing or moving like a snail on launch day.
Giving me all the video options possible to make running the game a great experience.
Using DRM that doesn't limit my ability to legally use the game.
Until you do otherwise, I either won't buy your game or I won't buy it until it's been out for months, I know what I'm getting, is cheap, and no longer has bugs.
Good developers who make good games make very good money on PC, Ubisoft are ignorant and greedy morons.
They can, but it's exponentially harder, and thus happens exponentially less. But you knew that already
Hell, your PR offensive really shows that you're not cut out for this. Ridiculous and unfair pricing, draconic DRM the pirates like always are not slightly faced by, broken promises, horrible ports, bad sales blamed on the pirates or God or whatever seems most convinient like a child losing in TF2 and showing open contempt for your paying customers. You obviously don't like what you're doing or you wouldn't sabotage yourself at this level.
But hey, I've done my part. Didn't buy a single game from you since the first Assassin's Creed. You're welcome.
Sure are lots of people defending piracy here. I guess we all know what side of the fence a lot of community members are on.
Hypothetically speaking, if piracy were NOT possible, would you pirates move on and get a different hobby or shell out the cash? That's a question I'd like answered honestly.

I really don't think anybody here (with the exception of on or two people perhaps) is actually defending piracy. People are mostly arguing whether Ubisoft's approach to the piracy issue is a smart one. People are also arguing whether piracy on the PC is as huge an issue as Ubisoft thinks it is (according to them 95% of PC gamers pirate their games, which is ridiculous). So yeah dude perhaps you should re-read the comments again.
To answer your question: Maybe? It depends? Thinking in absolutes is never a good idea.
Yeah we're fucked as PC gamers ... I'll just leave this around :
http://ignitegt.com/2011/09/pc-vs-console/
There are exceptions though, downloaded Rage just to check if the shitstorm was right and thank god I didn't spend a cent on that.
PD: I am going to pirate this game on the console just for the lulz.
There's a lot of deflection going on in the comments. And more than "one or two" people have said "Make a good game and I'll pay for it." which indicates to me they have justification in pirating something they feel isn't worth paying for. I guarantee there are more than one or two pirates in this thread.
And I did read the comments thanks. I read between the lines, maybe you should do the same. A person who doesn't pirate and wants the video game industry to thrive wouldn't be in this comment section deflecting the cause of piracy on DRM, poor PR, bad gameplay or otherwise.
We all avoid Ubi games now though, because of the shite DRM that's been implemented in the past, I own a console too but I'm not going to pick this game up on said console either if you treat me as a threat/criminal just because I enjoy playing games on my PC.
Piss one one platform and you're just pissing on gamers as far as I'm concerned.
When the pattern continues and pc releases are continually being tossed out to market as buggy ports, they just stop buying alltogether. Ubisoft is making a big assumption in saying that their PC games aren't selling because "95% of pc gamers pirate them". Wrong. Their games aren't selling because people have been burned one too many times by crappy ports, and have just stopped bothering with these games at all.
Wanting the pc game industry to thrive doesnt mean willingly paying 60 dollars for every piece of trash tossed our way. Ubisoft acts as if PC gamers simply don't buy games because we're all dirty pirates who hate paying for quality titles. Funny, Skyrim's PC release doesnt seem to be struggling.. gee, probably because its a QUALITY release that is worth paying for, rather than a lazy port?
I never said anyone was fucked now. However, you'd have to have your head in the sand HARD not to see that PC gaming isn't what it used to be. Things change, and if you're happy with PC gaming right now, that's fantastic. However, please trust me on this... don't EVER become complacent in thinking that something you enjoy will always be around.
The PC gaming I grew up with, and that caused me to fall in love with the gaming hobby as a whole, doesn't exist anymore and hasn't in a decade. There's a lot of reasons for that, but piracy is one of them, and it's more rampant now than it's ever been. I don't want to be a doomsayer and I certainly don't want to be reactionary over the cancellation (if you can even call it that) of two PC games. I just want to point out that this isn't an isolated incident, and likely won't be the last you hear of this kind of thing.
As I said, piracy isn't the ONLY potential problem with PC gaming, but it IS a problem, it's one of the few that you and I can do something about. Don't pirate no matter the excuse, certainly don't fucking seed pirated software torrents, and steer anyone you know who does toward Steam and Amazon sales. It may not be much, but it's the least we can do if it helps, ya know?
As I previously mentioned with the current gen there's no need to mod your console...
@Spaz
Thanks for actually reading my comment!
You are probably right about there being pirates in the Destructoid community. That is sad, no doubt. Pirating is awful. I don't do it and I don't excuse it.
However, I think it is unfair for you to judge the whole community as being pro-pirate based on the comments of one or two people. And yes, I re-read the comment section. Most people are complaining about Ubisoft's PR, DRM ect which I think is legitmate. Some people are saying that they will never buy a Ubisoft game. Does that mean that they will pirate them? I mean perhaps, but perhaps not. The thing about reading between the lines is that you tend to make a lot of assumptions. You know the whole spiel about the glass being half empty or half full, right? I tend to me more of a half-full kind of guy.
I like this community and that is why I reacted badly to your comment. I do appologize about questioning your reading comprehension skills, that was stupid of me.
@Tristrix
You are one of the reasons I like destructoid. Well said!
