95% piracy? Even as a hyperbole that is over the top. 50% maybe would be believable, even 60%.
Damn Jim, you must be one hell of a business wiz... Why the hell aren't you employed at Ubisoft right now working for a multimillion dollar company and instead just writing articles about it on a gaming site???
A console pirate must go out and get his console modded and has a chance of being perma-banned from the online services they're attached to. There is a barrier of entry here, being the cost/time it takes to choose to get your console modded.
PC just has to go to a torrent site/newsgroup and download away. A quick crack later and you're good to go. There is zero entry barrier.
Every single PC can pirate games. The same can't be said about consoles. The sheer ease of PC piracy makes it worse than console piracy. Stop using console piracy as a strawman.
Im never buying a Ubisoft game even if it DOES come out for PC.
So console piracy certainly isnt as big as issue, but really? These people are basically begging us to either not buy their games at all, or make a POINT of pirating them just for the luls.No UBisoft they arnt your customers and neither are used game buyers, customers are ppl who pay you money, get it though your thick skulls that 1 pirated copy = a lost sale.
And honestly 95%! Are those stats from China? Cos youre talking out of your arse if you mean western or worldwide.
Unless a large proportion of real customers are DLing cracks to play your games which means you FAILed
@Ragnar Dragonfyre - Thank you! I'm glad somebody else finally said that.
Incorrect, you just have to flash your console - which can be done at home in next to no time at all. Simples. In fact easier than PC pirating in most cases as you have to crack each individual game whereas in most cases with consoles you just need to do the operation once.
Not entirely true from a PR standpoint. If they'd said that "We don't think we'll have enough customers on the PC" they wouldn't have pissed off nearly as many people. By putting it in the way that they have they've alienated a much bigger group - bundling everyone in with the bad eggs.
Essentially shitty PR handling, really.
"Yeah, it might be easy to you or I or most of the people on a site like this but for most people, the idea of just downloading the game & running it on their PC is much easier."
Just as in depth as flashing in most cases. Anyone that's out there with the knowledge to be using a torrent client to download games has the wherewithal to flash a console.
The two processes (cracks on PC and flashing a console) are ridiculously similar in terms of complexity of deployment.
It takes a little bit more work to play a pirated game on the PC. For one you need to know how to create a virtual drive. So it's not as easy as you say it is. I still have no clue how to do that myself (nor am I interested in learning).
I am just happy that Ubisoft is bringing Rocksmith to PC. Of course, that game is pretty much pirate proof since you need to have their patented hardware to play it.
PC Gamers are an issue.
Ubisoft is an issue.
Game sites are an issue.
Everyone is an issue in this mess, but the best we and the companies can do is just blame each other.
/bravo humanity.
Ubisoft's DRM was hacked that's why they won't publish games on PC - it's too much work for little or no reward. especially that PC piracy can hurt sales on consoles - many people while having consoles will still pirate console games on pc if it has release on that platform to "save money".
PC is great platform for niche games, but terrible for mainstream games due to piracy. just looking at the numbers of Modern Warfare 3 torrents shows that more people pirated the game than actually bought on PC during launch week - that's nearly 400k pirated copies in less than 4 weeks.
This is an entirely ignorant statement. As has already been said by other publishers, most PC piracy does NOT represent lost sales. Most of the people who pirate your game were never going to be your customers in the first place.
Most PC piracy takes place in less developed countries, where it's unlikely your game was ever going to be purchased. In North America, for example, PC piracy is thought by some to be at around the same rate as Xbox piracy. The ratio of pirated copy to lost sale is therefor much higher on consoles than on PC.
These guys are looking at the number of instances their game was downloaded and thinking "omg I just lost 100 million in revene". No. 2 million people were NEVER going to buy your game on the PC to begin with.
yeah, it's impossible to play pirate games on pc - you have to download program that automatically creates virtual drive(hundreds of freeware software), open ISO file using that program and you're done. it's just impossible. pirating on consoles is so much easier - you only have to:
find specific modchip for your console and there are several designs and versions for each console - and each with different features,
find site that sells them,
install it directly on your console's motherboard,
install specific software,
etc.
yeah, easy stuff that every kid knows. facepalm.
They load them chock to the brim with abusive DRM (which lowers sales)
They have proven time and time again that they are INCOMPETENT when it comes to porting to the PC (Which lowers sales)
Then they whine about piracy (which I am sure has some effect on sales but hardly what they are claiming). Of course they essentially regard used game sales with just as much revilement.
Please by all means let the door hit you as you exit this market There are plenty of other PC games that are far more deserving for the PC gamers to shower with money.
