No Final Fantasy XIII in 2009 outside of Japan photo

Well there's a kick in the teeth. Those of us waiting for ever-more elusive JRPGs that aren't massively disappointing might have to wait a little longer, as Square Enix president Yoichi Wada has stated that the US and Europe won't be getting Final Fantasy XIII until 2010.

Although the PS3 version is slated for a  2009 release in Japan, Wada is claimed by Reuters as saying that we filthy round eyes won't be getting a sniff of the game. I imagine he'd have put it less racist though.

This game was announced in 2006 and there are only a handful of pictures and trailers to show for it. I was finally getting excited for it, but I'm not sure how long I can keep caring, especially as the JRPG genre has done nothing but irritate and sadden me for the past year.

If I have to deal with one more Infinite Undiscovery between now and FFXIII's release, I'll take a massive sh*t in Wada's hat. This is not a threat.

I'll just try to play lost odyssey over and over again until 2010

Well maybe Square is doing this strategically. Maybe they don't want Final Fantasy getting lost in the shuffle of the Q4 2009 line up. So they might release it early 2010. That wouldn't be that bad of an idea and hopefully it'll pay off.

At least it'll give me time to play my current backlog of RPGs.

Maybe the English translation will be better because of the delay.

Have you played FFXIII? Didn't think so.

...WHAT and the WHERE WAS I!?

That's at least 9 months to find bad voice actors and translate a game....I bet fans could sub it a lot faster than that for free.

I don't think it's coming out in March.

The full game isn't being released in March, right? I thought it was only a demo being released then. Am I wrong?

Yeah the Advent Children Bluray (thus the demo) comes out in March.

This is all the 360 version's fault!!1!!1!!

That being said, if I felt like playing an RPG feautring anreluctant, angsty, eunuch saving the world from twist endings, I'll go play ANY Squeeeeenix game ever.

Seriously, am I the only one who's sick of JRPG main characters?

Fuck. By that time the PS3 will have failed as a gaming console and its REALLY going to be inconvenient for me to stop watching movies on it and actually play a game. Shame shame.

After FF12 I was totally expecting this. I'm just glad that people can definitively leave it off their "Most Anticipated Games of 2009" lists now.

I tend to like the Final Fantasy games lately, but I don't get how Squeenix can get away with showing so little of the game and still be alright. I lots a lot of respect for them when they dropped everything except Final Fantasy, but lately their marketing department seems to be nonexistant.

Same thing happened for FF12. A few fleeting teasers followed by a small demo at least 6 months before the game's release. I'll probably still buy it, but I wouldn't be surprised if more and more fans are giving up the habit because of the company's douchebaggery.

Persona 4 has been a beacon of light in the dark, redundant nether of JRPGs. Seriously, the genre as a whole is starting to piss me off.

A game that is in the making for I don't know how long, I think it is very hard to believe this has anything to do with localisation. Localising a god damn game shouldn't take long, and it could run perfectly parallel to development. FF13 is exclusive in Japan, but it comes out on xbox360 elsewhere. It comes out late elsewhere. Go figure.

Come on... did people really expect it in the states in 09? Really??

Look at Square's track record, release in Japan. 4-6 months later, out it comes in the US. There's no way they would have finished localization to release in 09. Square just takes to long, always has and unless they do things smarter, always will. I'm just disappointed there's no US demo. That bummed me out.

This is really Square's fault for waiting until PS3 development is totally done before even starting on 360 development for America. They really should have known better and allocated resources more appropriately. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if this slips into 2011 for the West; a release in 2011 is practically guaranteed for Europe, of course.

And this is to say nothing of FF Versus XIII.
the Golden Avatar's Avatar - Comment posted on 01/16/2009 11:42

@Necros

Well, Versus is another team and is (at this point) exclusive to the PS3. So, that might get that one out faster. That's assuming they aren't lying about that as well.

Personally, I think it's just a business move on SE's part.

Well that pisses me off. I'm a big fan of the Final Fantasy series but Square has been doing such a shoddy job for so long (and getting away with it) that it's incredibly hard to retain much faith in them. Hell, it's been several years since they announced the game and I know next to nothing about the plot. Just the same damn trailer that gets ~6 seconds longer each time they release it.

Damn you Square!

I tried to get excited about this game, but with the total lack of any lengthly gameplay footage and pure CG nonsense, I've been turned off on the idea completely.

But by 2010 you can have plenty of footage out by then, Square! Let's hop to it!

I don't even care for any of these games anymore. I miss the old days of square, when games actually came out and you could actually play them. Now fan boys salivate over new fmv's and get hyped for a game that comes out three years later its bs. Im sorry fuck you square-enix.

Fantastic, Sloth-Enix. How long has it been since you have put up something that was worthwhile. Both of your recent games sucked apparently. I didn't even bother to play them, but the overall feeling is the same.

Of course that could have been because the 360 is a steaming pile of shit. Which means we aren't going to get to play Star Ocean 4 either, just tired of that fucking console.

We may have completely forgotten about FFXIII by the time it finally shows its ugly face.
