For a lot of gamers, buying a PS3 is like stocking a hope chest. Not only are you plunking down your half-grand for the raw processing power needed to watch Talladega Nights in high-def, you're investing in the future of gaming -- namely some forthcoming PS3 exclusives like Metal Gear Solid 4 and Final Fantasy XIII. Having already dashed your hopes for the former, it pains me to inform you of the latest word on the latter: it might be much later than we thought.
The news comes from Square-Enix president Yoichi Wada at today's financial briefing in Tokyo. When asked for an update on the anticipated flagship sequel's status, Wada replied:
"It will still take a bit more time. At the very least, [a release] this fiscal year is definitely out of the question."
That puts the expected timeframe of Final Fantasy XIII's release beyond March of 2008 in Japan. Unless Square-Enix runs a translation parallel to the game's development, this could mean a significant delay for releases in the US and Europe. Should localization time match what we've come to expect from past Final Fantasy releases -- typically five to seven months -- we might not see a US release of FFXIII until Christmas.
Sucks, huh? At least we'll be seeing solid PS2 releases until the end of time -- that ought to tide us over until then.

Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Pshaw!
Christmas 08'? No thanks. Maybe they should spend less time on the planned 10 years of FFXIII sequels and make sure that FFXIII actually succeeds.
'cos, y'know, this is Square-Enix -- I wouldn't be altogether surprised.
Wasn't there some mention that FFXIII wasn't a PS3 exclusive a while back? That Square was open to porting FFXIII?
If I'm mistaken, I still won't buy a PS3, but I will be disappointed.
The FFXIII exlusivity is still shady. The comment about it came from a member of SOE france where he said that they were still in discussions about exlusivity, so people took that to mean it wasn't locked down as exclusive as many people had believed.
As far as square being open to porting it, sakaguchi(sp?) who created FF and is now doing Blue Dragon has said there is no reason that Squeenix shouldn't put it on the 360 and that the White Engine works well on both systems so it wouldn't be a problem. Of course he has no say whatsoever when it comes to FF anymore.
I wont buy a console unless there are at least five games already on the system that I really want and can't get anywhere else.
The PS3 wont be at that level for me until at least 2008, maybe 2009.
