No fair! Japanese Virtual Console gets Treasure Hunter G photo

Being able to pull down classics like Super Mario Bros. 3 to your Nintendo Wii via the Virtual Console service is great, but many of our retro daydreams are laced with images of some of the many Japanese 16-bit RPGs that never saw a US release. For those daydreamers, jealousy will set in after checking out the list of December releases for the Japanese Virtual Console.

Cubed3 reports that  the 1996 Super Famicom strategy RPG Treasure Hunter G will make its way to the VC in December in Japan. This title, and other Super Famicom RPGs like Bahamut Lagoon, were some of the games that English-speaking gamers had to use "alternative methods" to play. Ah, those were the days.

The full list of December releases (which you'll find after the jump) include other whine-worthy titles like Super Street Fighter II (coming soon), Pokemon Snap (dude, it's fun!), and Langrisser II.

If you ask me, US releases of Treasure Hunter G and Bahamut Lagoon would have put them alongside Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, and Final Fantasy II and III as the greats of the 16-bit RPG era. Let's hope that the English-speaking territories see some of these releases.

Famicom / NES (500 Wii Points)
  • Downtown Nekketsu Koushinkyoku: Soreyuke Daiundoukai (Technos)

  • Super Mario Bros. 3 (Nintendo)

  • Super Street Fighter II (Capcom)

  • Treasure Hunter G (Square Enix)
Nintendo 64 (1,000 Wii Points)
  • Pokémon Snap (The Pokémon Company)
Mega Drive (600 Wii Points)
  • Rolling Thunder 2 (Bandai Namco)

  • Columns III: Taiketsu! Columns World (Sega)

  • Party Quiz Mega Q (Sega)

  • Langrisser II (NCS)
PC-Engine / Turbo-grafx 16 (600/800 Wii Points)
  • Gate of Thunder (Hudson)

  • Ai-Choaniki (NCS)

  • Image Fight II (Irem)

  • Dragon Slayer: Eiyuu Densetsu (Hudson)

Man and I like RPG games. Oh well I'll get Pokemon Snap and beat it in an hour, just like I did when I first played it.

The look of that game reminds me a lot of Wild ARMs.

I wished upon a star last night that I might get the chance to play Treasure Hunter G on VC. I hope my wish comes true.

Also they could easily release most every Nekketsu game that didn't come out here in Japanese, and they'd still be totally playable and awesome.

I'd definitely want these RPGs out over here.

Btw, I'll have to have a look on wiki for Ai-Choaniki to see what you mean, Wedge.

There's no chance Ai-Choaniki will make it to the US, given how conservative they are about everything else. If they brought it over, all the uptight Christians would throw shit fits and file lawsuits.

Japan only VC games make me a sad panda...
Previously unavailible VC games getting US and Euro releases make me not a sad panda.
The above statements are hardily rocket science to figure out: Treasure Hunter G in Europe and US = Wii owners

More than anything I want Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma for Virtual Console. Especially Terranigma. I mean, the game already was in English for the PAL release, all they gotta do is bring it over here!

And the US already has at least one SNES RPG Great: Breath of Fire II.

I have an honest question: Which of those damn-good-looking RPG were actually worth playing? I played the hell out of FF 2, 3, Chrono Trigger, and friends back in the day, and while I was always interested in playing some of these forbidden fruits, by the time I got around to making them available (via the afore mentioned "alternative methods") I just couldn't get into them.

Which ones are really worth the 40 hour investment?

Well I know I could never get into any game that required emulation, the fact that it's sitting there free makes you think "ah i'll leave it for some other day" but you keep doing that everyday and never play it and just go play some modern games or browse porn.

I like playing games on my TV and the fact that I paid for it gives me some motivation to play it.

@ the Baron. I actually just picked up Bahamut Lagoon in Osaka a couple months ago, and even though I understood next to nothing from the story. It was still a really great tactics game.

I'm completely agreeing with Xagarath there. I'm already a complete selfish ass when it comes to Chrono Trigger for many reasons. But i'd love to have many of those rpgs, along with oh I dunno....FIRE EMBLEMS NOT RELEASED HERE, to be graced upon us on the VC.

I'm all up for supporting the Wii and VC over emulating. if it means actually playing my system more.
