No DLC for GoldenEye 007

No DLC for GoldenEye 007 photo

After having it bluntly confirmed that GoldenEye 007 would indeed have no DLC whatsoever, I struggled with whether or not to top this story off with our intrepid hero, Captain Obvious. On the one hand games on the Wii just don't get DLC, but on the other it isn't impossible for them to get it and that means there's always that chance. Thus putting Captain Obvious up there is basically saying that a Wii game not having DLC is a foregone conclusion, which is saddening.

However, since this story basically backs up that conclusion we have Captain Obvious above and the short response I got from Julian Widdows, Executive Producer at Activison Blizzard UK, when I asked him what the chances were, if any, of GoldenEye 007 getting DLC right here: "None. Sorry."

Sad to hear it, but considering the fact that I played the original (and still do on occasion) over and over with the exact same levels and no idea what DLC meant (Double Large Cranberry?) I think I'm going to be just fine without it this time around too.

Anyone surprised by this?

Sounds good to me. In the vast majority of games, DLC has just been a way to rip off the consumer anyway. I wish more new games would go the 'no DLC' route.

This is the one advantage the Wii has over the 360 and PS3, in my opinion: we're getting the full game at retail shipment.

LOL BUY OLD SCHOOL GOLDENEYE MAPS ONLY $15 A POP WE FEED OFF YOUR NOSTALGIA - it would make me sick.

+1 for bickle up there. I'm getting pretty sick of buying a game like BC2 only to see a version that includes all of the DLC realeased just months later.

DLC or not Activision will find some way to screw customers over. I hate them so much.

Games do not need DLC, you know what a game without DLC is .... Complete.

Most of the time DLC translates to: We developed a bunch of stuff, cut a bunch out and plan to piecemeal it out to you over the next year for teh moneys.

Okay, didn't expect there to be any DLC...but after reading how they are giving "codes" for pre-orders that allow different game modes, I figured "oh, so they are going to give a DLC code to unlock the modes, and then later open it up for everyone."

So, now that they've stated there will be no DLC...they are indeed giving codes you need to enter into the game to unlock the modes? Like the old-school way?

They have heard of the Internet, right? That mystical place where people can share these kid of codes fairly effortlessly?

Huh.

And unfortunately that's exactly what most DLC has become.

Guys like Patriot Snake here are the reason why developers know they can sell gamers content a little bit at a time, and have them pay for the game 3 times over. Usually multiplayer content too that they didn't spend much time creating in the first place.

Wait... You mean my $50 will buy me an entire, fully-featured game without some bullshit dlc pack 2 weeks from now with "extra content" that was developed before the game went gold to nickel and dime us, because game developers believe we were born yesterday and are fucking retarded? Sign me up!

@ Patriot Snake,

"A game with DLC is..a game with more stuff to extend its playtime? "

How do you figure? Seriously, I would love to hear how you could possibly explain this. DLC automatically means longer playtime? You're stupid if you believe that. Very, very naive. Like a marketing departments dream come true.

You missed the point most people are making.

There is no question that there is some great DLC out there. The fact is that most of it is developed at the same time as the main game, but held back until after release so that gamers will have to pay for it a little at a time if they want it.

No obviously I don't know if you've ever purchased dlc. What I do know from your first comment is that you (and many others not just you) have accepted this type of developement as the norm.

There are three types of DLC:

Horse Armor - Shit that should have been in the game, but we cut it so we could sell it to you. There are options and feature that came with games in previous generations, but we want to see just how stupid you are and if you'll pay for them.

Paid DLC - This is content that might have actually been developed after the game was released. Guess what, though? Since download content doesn't really have to go through Sony and MS quality assurance and quality testing isn't the strong suit of devs like Bioware and Bethesda, you're going to get content that is buggy as hell.

"Free" DLC - This, again, is stuff that should have been in the game anyway, but we're going to take it out to guilt you into buying our games brand new. That is, within the first several months of release. Once those vouchers expire (and they will expire by design), you'll have to buy the content because people who buy the game new months later are just a filthy as people that buy used games.

Pre-order "bonus" - We couldn't be neat like Atlus and release a complete game with a physical bonus item, like a CD soundtrack, art book or plushie. Instead we're going to rip something out of the game so you are forced to choose one store over another to get the game. That or we're going to create a massively broken weapon or move that is game-breaking in multiplayer. If Activision could do it for Goldeneye 007, we would make Oddjob the bonus. If it was Metroid, we'd try to get Nintendo to give up Samus' Screw Attack as a bonus.

I've never understood why people claim that a game having DLC means it is incomplete. Go ahead and play a game without downloading its DLC, I guarantee you can play from beginning to end and if there is multiplayer, you can play that too. Then, if you really like the game, you can extend its life by buying some extra multiplayer maps or a new single player campaign. If you don't want to pay, then you don't get to play, why is that so bad? You people are so self important that you feel you are entitled to get things for free. It honestly makes me sick. I love DLC and look forward to digital distribution becoming a bigger part of our industry.

This game doesn't need DLC, correct.

That doesn't mean DLC is bad for games. What is bad is DLC which is already stored on the disk. I don't object to the concept of it. Just how publishers call it "DLC", as if it's something extra that was not on the disk. There should be a law which forces them to call it what it really is "unlockable content stored on disk".

In addition to what I just posted I would like to say that I agree with the guy with the hat, unlockable content stored on the disk is fucking bullshit. However, DLC for games like GTA IV, Fallout 3 and Borderlands is awesome and I am happy that it exists.

I never buy DLC. I think when I first got my PS3 I paid for some maps for Resistance or Warhawk or something, but that was about it.

There's some paid DLC that I'll get around to, like GTA4, but I still haven't finished the main story in GTA4 so that's gonna have to wait.

I waited long enough to get Fallout3 that I got the GOTY pack with all the DLC and that was cool. Good content. I probably wouldn't have paid for it and downloaded it otherwise though.

But I'll always take all the FREE DLC they can dish out.

You've missed it too man. Most dlc might as well be content that is already on the disk at the time of purchase that you pay to unlock. Most of it was developed at the same time.

I'm not saying that a developer revisiting a title months after release and creating new content doesn't ever happen. It's just that nowadays most dlc is a part of the developement plan from the start.

I don't think DLC being planned from the start is such a bad thing, so long as they don't advertise it in-game to you like Fable II and Dragon Age did. So long as the DLC isn't actually on the disk, I see no reason to complain.

@skullleader.

And how exactly is DLC killing the game industry? So extending a games replay value and bringing in loads of revenue for the games industry is killing said industry?

So you mean to say making money ruins an industry? You need to get a proper grasp on economics.

I seriously don't get all the hating on DLC. Maybe it's because I don't care about Call of Duty and it's expensive DLC. All I know is I have bought all DLC for Mass effect and Dragon age origins and I thoroughly enjoyed them. DLC improves games in my opinion. If you disagree then I guess I still win because I enjoy the games more.

Longest post I've ever had on the front page.

Yeah there's DLC on some Wii games. A couple of WiiWare games are nothing but DLC. Space Invaders Get Even is a $5 demo. You pay $15 more to get the actual game. My Life as a King/Darklord are, for $15, nearly empty shells. You can fill them with gameplay for another $40 each.

All three are Squeenix, for what it's worth.
