No cross-server play for StarCraft II out of the box photo

American StarCraft fans looking for a chance to take on their Asian counterparts will have to wait a bit, as StarCraft II is not going to be supporting cross-server play on day one. While considered for initial conclusion, and is still being considered for a future content patch, Blizzard decided that they want to keep all servers regional for the initial launch of the game. This means that people in the US can only play against other North Americans, the Euros have to play with other Europeans, and the Asian servers will be playing amongst themselves.

The main reason given for this decision was gameplay/server stability -- because the new matchmaking system is a big part of the new Battle.net, Blizzard doesn't want players to be thrown into laggy matches with people halfway around the world.

Once the game has been up and running for a while, and Blizzard has had a chance to evaluate Battle.net and server performance, we may see the feature in game. Until then, I hope you're on good terms with the rest of your countrymen.

Couldn't you just when you create an account say you are Asia? I remember being able to do this with Diablo 2. I'm in the beta so I feel I should already know this too.

That should read say you are in Asia, not you are Asia. That's what I get for being too lazy to sit up and use my computer and using my phone instead.

I'm not too upset about losing the privilege of getting decimated in the first 60 seconds of the game.

This is getting worse and worse.

As an Aussie, does this mean that I will be stuck playing people from Asia? I have two problems with that.
Firstly, this will limit my interactions with English speaking people, and to be frank, that kind of puts me off. Not in a racist, 'learn to speak English' way, but I like games to be a social affair. Being unable to converse really restricts that.
And secondly, Asian players are generally pretty obsessive when it comes to Starcraft. I won't ever win a single game.

This would have been a title that I would have gladly gone to a midnight launch in order to buy it. Now, I don't think I will ever pick it up.

True, but going into a random match will mean, statistically speaking, that I will likely be playing a non-English speaking player 99% of the time. If I could specify the region, like we could in the original, I wouldn't have that issue.

Well, I'm sure the matchmaking system still applies for you lot.
And unless it's a mod map, people hardly talk in SC anyways.

I bet this has more to do with legal liability than they are letting on. With countries like Korea imposing game time limits on players which have to be enforced by the developer, and China with its anti west gaming rules, there is probably a degree of liability they avoid by having the games separate for different jurisdictions. Even if they are operating it in both companies (and not farming it out to another co.) it is probably easier to have everyone on X server have some type of time limitation and everyone on Y server to have none or a different lim, then to try to mix them up on the same one.

Did you really need to explain you're not racist by wanting to play with people that speak your same language?

Ya right the real reason is because Korean players would constantly dominate noobs, even Korean NOOBS would dominate other country noobs. Their lowest player is like one of our best players. That's the real reason.

What are we discussing here? Blizzards reasons are real and make a lot of sense. People claim North American players will be dominated. Not true, the matchmaking system should take into account your skill level.

Same goes to the Aussies, if korean SC players >>> aussie SC players then you'll never play them according to the matchmaking system. Now if you're a good aussie player then you'll get a korean ass kicking, just like all other good koreans players.

This also means that if i learn how to type GG in korean, people will know i'm not korean and not rage quit/disconnect instantly. GG blizzard, GG.

At least they did not scrap out the idea entirely. Hope it becomes available soon after the release.

That still doesn't explain why Blizzard would restrict its customers this way. Ultimately, they are just pissing on the people that made them a success in the first place. I am a firm believer in personal choice- if I want to play a 'laggy' game against friends in America, I should be allowed.

It's no easy task to create a server that can connect to 20 different countries at once. The amount of money, time, and headaches it causes is reason alone to keep them from bunching everyone together right now. I'm sure it will happen eventually, they just wanted to get the game out while they could. After everything is solved they may even offer an online coupon for those who had accounts during the time when the servers were all singled out.
