No console price drops means sad Bobby Kotick photo

Consoles cost money. I keep trying to take a PS3 from my local Best Buy, but they refuse to hand it over if I don't give them cash. Unfortunately, I don't have cash and thus I can't buy the console and thus I can't buy the games on the console and, of most concern to Activsion CEO Bobby Kotick, I can't buy Activision games on the console. It is in fact so concerning to him that he felt that the lack of a price cut for any of the consoles was one of the most disappointing things about E3.

Speaking to Bloomberg News, Kotick said he was "disappointed not to see any sort of aggressive price cutting," at the recently concluded E3 2009. He followed up by explaining his logic: "Of all the things that the hardware companies need to be doing right now, it's recognizing the difficulties of the economy and pricing their hardware appropriately." Sounds fair to me, though the $60 price tag on every game can't be helping game sales either. If you're going to ask Sony and Microsoft to lose money you better be ready to bite the bullet yourself, Mr. Kotick.

I think it was wise for companies not to announce price cuts now. If they announce them for christmas, they will get more sales that way.
If they announce them for xmas now, people will hold off until then, thus losing sales throughout the year.

Well I hope Bobby Kotick has noticed the ridiculous rrp of Modern Warfare 2 in the UK: £55 at least that's what the retailers are saying. That's about $90.

It would be the most unsound move to announce a price in the middle of june. the holiday season is months off and they would only lose money for the summer season. remember, sony pretty much has a handful of exclusives before the fall, where they explode with content. they want people to see the ps3 as a more proper alternative to the 360/wii. the rumored slim line would reinvigorate interest in the press and consumers all around.
e3 is more of a place to exhibit the future of a platform and generate confidence and support from the community. this e3 was perfect and those who complain that price drops should be included the first week of june are missing some basic business management

Fuck Kotick.

When he is not busy attempting to stop brutal legend he is thinking up more ways to milk the guitar hero duty hawk pro skater: Medieval warfare franchises. Getting sick of his shit, but the bad part is enough people will buy every iteration of guitar hero so in Koticks eyes, it is justified. You can argue being a business involves making money but there are companies that make money and companies that make money while being total assholes about it. I dunno where I'm going with this. and then I ate the bowl.

If you find a PS3 for less then 1800 bucks here, i give you my soul.
Only a 300% price cut would help Brazil.

PS: Fucking taxes.

You're God damned right; retail prices are too high. I would absolutely buy more games (read: way too many for my own good) if they were cheaper. Simple economics: prices go down, sales go up.

Bobby Kotick can go fuck himself. The day he dies will be a day to celebrate.

Any man who tries to stop Tim Schafer's work is not a man fit for life.

You know what else makes Bobby Kotick sad? Not having Brutal Legend. But I hear he handles sadness real well, by throwing a fit, crying, and suing people.

It's foolish to expect Sony to cut prices on a system they are already selling at a loss. You want to talk simple economics? Losing money is a bad business practice, how about that?

Stop expecting things that don't make sense.

No its a simple matter of shafting the consumer. Yes they lose $40 on every console they sell. They also make boatloads on first-party games and content online. However, that's not even my main point. Look at the PSP GO! (Gay as hell name btw). It's $80 more than a PSP 3000. With the same tech besides a larger screen, slide, and memory. Not worth the extra money. But the games for that? Cost nothing but dev time. Nothing. Not a single (probably $15 per, because they are so rarely created compared to a dvd or even blu-ray) UMD. They're gonna make boatloads. If the GO! were say...$150? Then I'd buy no price drop for PS3, but this looks like they're just going for pure profit rather than to get their console out there (Like is working for 360) and let the profit roll in from games.

Yeah, he really needs to stop expecting that Activision deserves all the money and nobody else deserves any.

I want a PS3 price drop as much as the next guy, actually no I don't really care I have one already... but I I'm massively in favour of anything that pisses off Bobby Kotick... who knows maybe if Sony don't drop the price soon he'll sue them too.

@ wh1terav3n: Ok so maybe I'm being a little nitpicky here, but the PSP Go has a smaller screen than the 3000.

If Sony followed Activision's advice, they would release a repackaged PS3 every 4-6 months. The old consoles wouldnt play the new games, either :P

Blizzard... how could you go to bed with these WHORES!?
