No committing to Zelda in 2010 for Nintendo photo

Despite the fact that Miyamoto himself has said that Nintendo is shooting for a 2010 release of the new Zelda teased at E3 behind closed doors, we find it very hard to believe that it will actually come out then. Zelda games are notorious for their epic development time and constant delays and we're already getting one on the DS this year. On top of this Nintendo is really trying to not set a release year that this game will come out. That's not a release date, or a release month, but an a release year.

In a recent interview with GameTrailers TV Nintendo of America's Reggie Fils-Aime sounded a bit shocked that they'd even suggest a 2010 release for the game and then went on to confirm absolutely nothing by saying, "We haven't committed to Zelda in 2010." Bummer.

Despite my disappointment with this fact I can understand it. Hopefully Nintendo will play it smart and not announce a release date until the game is absolutely and completely done because there is nothing more depressing than marking your calendar for a new game and then having that date pushed back again and again.

Miyamoto has said before, "release a game late and eventually everyone will forget. Release a bad game and everyone will remember forever". Like most games, I'd rather see it done right than rushed out the door.

Which leaves us with Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid: Other M. Sounds fair, although I really think this threesome could give the Wii the momentum it's badly needing in a 2010 that's already a bit too far into his life cycle.

But then again, what about Star Fox eh? I'd say Donkey Kong, but what the hell, those were all obsolete collect-a-thons. Nintendo would have to reboot the series' staples and I don't see it happening too soon.

Jungle Beat was great, but deep down it was a nostalgic, bongo-fueled romp through something that resembled the good old DKC days. Even writing it fells good. Try it. DKC. But, honestly, the collect-a-thon, man. The repetitive levels, man.

I'd like to say "they'll take the time they need to make the game great," but after Twilight Princess, I'm not so sure I believe that. Considering Pikmin 3's complete absence at E3 this year, I'm not at all surprised that this Zelda won't be coming out any time soon.

Unfortunately, this also further supports Nintendo's claims that there will be no Wii 2.0 for the next few years. Honestly, there is no reason to hold back the HD gaming this long and it's really unfortunate.

I haven't used my Wii in about a year now.

Still.... I'll hang on to it just in case something good comes out.

@Korolev Pretty much the same here.

Some people are just afraid of commitment, you know? Don't give 'em a hard time.

I wonder if these rumors about about a new line of consoles from Nintendo and the late announcement of a new Zelda-game are related? I'd definetly prefer to see the next Zelda-game on a newer console than the wii though.

It's already been three years. If it doesn't come out next year, that will make it four. There's waiting patiently for a game, and then there's having to wait for excessively long time for maybe even no reason at all? Wind Waker came out in 2003; Twilight Princess in 2006. Three years. All I'm saying is shooting for next year is not nonsense. In fact, it's the only sense.

all I can say is this: they better fucking commit to 2010. It been too fucking long. 4 years is long enough for a Zelda title. I dont' care if it its fall/winter 2010, I do not want to wait till 2011

Had they been working on the next Zelda game, instead of fucking around with dumbshit like "Wii Music" or "Will Ass Driller", the next game would have been done in 2010. Nintendo is only acting all smug now, because everyone is pissed at them.

if this turns out to be a "casual" game i swear to god....

I started to believe that there is no such thing as hardcore gamers. All games to me are casual regardless who they are targeting to.

And I often noticed that most of self-claimed hardcore gamers tend to be an OCD suffers. They can't let go of the past and still believes that the old games are worth something. In my mind, most hypes around old games are corporate "spins" along with die hard fan boys with ADD and OCD. They tend to be very vocal.

All games are casual. There are very few games that are unique and could reach the literature level. I feel sorry for those people who have not exposed to entertainment mediums other than games. All games are casual and meant to entertain and occasionally leaves some memorable, but insignificant moments. Living life is a lot more interesting than obsessed with games.

Cool story bro. Nice of you to come in and condescend to both the casual and hardcore at the same time. You don't want there to be a distinction or you'd feel left out. I won't deny that the distinction between "hardcore" and "casual" can be wildly blown out of proportion (EX: "M rated games are hardcore" which isn't exactly true), but go play Demon's Souls, any MMORPG endgame or against your most grizzled Street Fighter IV/Warcraft III/Counterstrike veteran then come back and tell me all games are casual, story-driven entertainment.

2010 sounds like rushing it imo, it's logical since they probably have nothing or just a few things done of the game (i doubt they have 3 years of development already), Zelda games tend to take a lot of time.

So yes this may be the brawl wait all over again lol, let the rumors begin too!

Very much agreed. There will be other games to occupy 2010 if Zelda does get pushed back.

Dammit. If Zelda came out next year with Epic Mickey and Prime in the pipeline that would've been awesome.

They can't commit to anything because what is this, like the 5th or 6th zelda? Really? can't they just try something new for once or are they too scared to move into modern things, like making a console with modern graphics.

Of course it won't come out in 2010. BECAUSE IT DOESN'T EXIST. This is my problem with die-hard Zelda fans. They get one "Oh, Zelda? Wait, what's tha---oh, that one... Yeah, sure we're making one" out of a Ninty rep at E3, and then they get it into their minds that he's not trying to keep them buying Wii things for a while longer, but that he genuinely cares about the 5% of his market that knows what Zelda is.

They did. Twice.

First with Majora's Mask, in which they completely changed the progression from the norm, and then secondly with Wind Waker's visual style.

What ended up happening? A vocal crowd emerged asking for more Ocarina of Time, and it was only years after their release that many folks came around on both titles.

By that time, though, it was too late. Twilight Princess was already in the pipeline. And, once more, what ended up happening upon its release? "It's an OoT rehash."

Be careful what you wish for.

Could you please stop throwing OCD and ADD references around without learning what those illnesses actually are? This is coming from a person who's been in misery since the age of 12 because of OCD btw. Actual OCD that is.

@GohanGVO
Well said! People only got themselves to blame for Twilight Princess being a OOT clone. Thankfully it seems like most people has now realised that we should leave the old memories the way they are. But sadly enough there are still too many OOT fanboys left, especially in the Zelda/Nintendo forums.

@GoldenGamerXero:

No, it's not just like the Brawl wait; in the Brawl wait, we got constant reminders (e.g. trailers, the official Smash Bros. website, etc.) from 2006 to 2008, and they have done nothing of the sort with the new Zelda Wii game. We haven't even got a trailer, so it's a bit early to say it's exactly like Brawl.

Now, if they release a trailer for the game two years before the game comes out (again), and have a daily updated website devoted to the game, THAT would be exactly like the Brawl wait.

Well said (first post). I believe the same thing. BTW, "Wii Ass Driller" sounds promising.

The only thing this means to me is that I'm not buying a Wii in this or next year. I don't want to contemplate past Zelda's and maybe how this new one will be a "clone" or not live up to past Zelda's or other BS. I am a gamer, I just want the game to release! However I'd rather forget then remember forever.

Of course they won't. That way they can push the game back by a whole year, then say they want to make it a launch title for the next gen system, and then they have to slightly cock the world at a weird Dutch angle to fit the new controller, which requires the entire world to be altered in some way, instead of, you know, adjusting the character model.
