No co-op in Left 4 Dead? That was the plan photo

Can you imagine Left 4 Dead without co-op? At this point, it would be like Street Fighter without a versus mode, or Keith Vaz without the the complete and total ignorance. Strangely enough, however, this co-op game began life without co-op even being a factor.

"Originally we had what would be considered Versus mode now: that was the main game. There was no separate Co-op," explains Valve's Chet Faliszek. "What we found was that we wanted to make the highs and lows of the co-op experience more distinct. [We had] this problem that if the infected pound on the survivors then their reward for kicking their butt would be, 'Hey you don’t get to spawn for 60 seconds because we want to have this really big lull.' Well, that’s not a good reward.

"At some point we separated the two… The splitting of those in the process is probably the biggest change we’ve made. It’s really helped define the game."

Funny the way things turn out, isn't it?

I have a bad feeling this is going to be one of those games everbody forgets about in a month or two. The demo was fun with my friends, but when you take away the initiall 'holycrapzombies' factor Left 4 Dead is a dumbed down FPS that both graphically and gameplay wise feels about a year or two behind.

I liked the demo, but I will have to wait for tomorrow and see how the experience plays.

@SephirothX

We'll have to see after it comes out. If the game just takes the experience from the demo and moves it to different locations, then yes. Everyone will play through it a couple of times and move on.

We'll just have to wait and see if Valve has any curveballs waiting for us. Knowing Valve, there's probably a couple.

Desperate article?

This relates to them splitting Versus and coop. It was originally intended for Coop and versus to be one in the same.

Having played the demo about 30 times over now (always on expert)...

No.. this game wont get old. The same 2 levels are always different, I can only imagine the entire game...

Not to mention if you get the pc version the plethora of user mods and maps that are no doubt going to extend the gameplay of left4dead for years to come.

I couldn't get 2 player local Co-op working on the demo. Am I just stupid or what?

Pretty fun stuff...

About half my friends have spent 20+ hours playing the demo.

This game will not die in two months, mark my words.

hmm...the idea for left 4 dead didn't include coop 3 yrs ago. As long as it has it now who cares?

Well if it lasts me two months that will be about one more then I usually get from a game. Although I'll have to grab some steam names from here, maybe that way I won't have people who all run in their own separate directions every time.

I'm just going to go ahead and say it: If any of you can't appreciate the brilliance of this game, get the fuck out. Go. Now. Leave my sight. Out. If you want your precious innovation and cutting edge FPS nonsense, go buy a PS3 and jerk off over Resistance or Killzone or something. Valve is in the business of making good, fun games. The end.

apparently the writer at Gamespy believes that Co-Op was part of the original envisioning of the game according to their review.
