No character DLC planned for Street Fighter IV photo

If you’ve been itching for additional Street Fighter IV characters to master, take a number and find a comfortable chair. Character downloadable content isn’t going to happen anytime soon.

Capcom’s Seth Killian recently delivered the bad news to Gaming Union. According to Killian, Capcom doesn’t have any plans for character DLC and wouldn’t release it anyway because functions as a community wedge.

“No plans for additional DLC right now,” Killian said. “We want the core game to be a completely functional package, and character DLC could split the user-base.”

Plus, you know, Dee-Jay and T-Hawk are dumb characters only fit for a Championship Edition release -- a possibility that ScrewAttack may have gotten wind of in March.

Oh come on, everybody would have complained if they'd offered characters as DLC.

I totally agree with the reasoning. Seth actually confirmed shortly before the game's release so nothing groundbreaking here.

I find that a legitamte explanation, considering companies gleam at the idea of nickle and diming you with DLC. Stand Up action Capcom.

They could just put out a free patch that replaces El Fuerte with Dee Jay, and no one would even notice. And then they could fix the netcode and add lobbies.

Man, why does anybody gripe on DeeJay and T. Hawk? They are both great characters and way better than the losers made for this "sequel" (minus Abel who is okay).

Thank god. I really don't want to get nickle and dimed. I could see them charging 10 dollars or more for each character. 6 characters would be 60 bucks or more.

DLC- Dicking Loyal Customers.

Seeing as how half the match is knowing the strengths and weaknesses of your opponent's character, the only way they could pull this off without doing an entirely new release (which would, again, split the fanbase) would be to release new characters as a free, mandatory update. Anything besides said mandatory update is going to split up the online game, too, which makes SF4 a less attractive proposition.

And enough with the new character hate already! Though I haven't met many Crimson Vipers online, she's a viable character in the right hands. Rufus is actually near-top tier, and fun to play to boot (I main him), Abel is hard to learn but fun to play both as and against, and El Fuerte is downright scary when you play someone who's put in some practice with him. And let's face it: They're all better than T. Hawk.

It would be nice to have the parry system back. Much more likely to be reintroduced on a new disc then an update.

I don't not ever want to see parries back. FA's work much much better and actually give far more options than parries ever could. Parries were literally the worst thing possible.

@twentythoughts: I was never talking about viability. I'm talking about the characters themselves. None of them look like they belong (Note: everything I say disregards Able who is okay). By being shoved in with the II/Alpha crowd the IV characters lack the opportunity to come into their own and just seem like extras rather than fully realized characters. I'm not saying any of them were bad ideas (Secret Agent, Kung-Fu Master, Luchador, MMA fighter), just bad execution of said ideas. I (along with people who agree with me) would probably be less harsh on them if they were part of a mostly new cast that fit their style (though I would still think they are half-baked).

On T. Hawk: Seriously? What's wrong with the guy? Let me break him down the way I see him:

Look- So many people say he is a racist design but I don't know what they are talking about. The entire II series featured stereotypical renditions of warriors from around the world (you might even call them World Warriors). T. Hawk fit that theme perfectly by donning the Indian Stereotypes of feathers and war paint. But like the other fighters the stereotype was used as a basis for the character and not just being him. T. Hawk doesn't wear 19th century Indian clothing but rather Jeans and a Vest with Frill like the modern Indian might wear (or say someone who lives in the West). His paint and feathers are part of his design but they are complimentary to him rather distractingly out-of-place.

Story- T. Hawk's story should have gotten major points for how closely it mirrors the plights of actual Indians. His land and people were destroyed by an invading force led by a power-hungry white dictator (where have I heard that before). His father was killed and he was left without a home. T. Hawk entered the tournament to get his revenge on Bison for what he did. T. Hawk successfully defeated Bison and got back his land. When he returns he is temporarily saddened by the horrible state his people and their land are in. But he vows to do everything in his power to restore them to their former glory. Now that is damn heroic!

Moves- While T. Hawk does borrow the Mexican Typhoon and Tomahawk Buster from Zangief and Ryu ,respectively, they feel completely natural as a part of his moveset. The Hawk Dive is an interesting and useful move that reflects T. Hawks connection the bird he is named after. Not to mention his normal moves are wholly original (how many more characters are we going to have that perform a rising uppercut as their Crouching Hard Punch? Thankfully T. Hawk isn't one of them).

I don't know how you'll feel about T. Hawk after reading my post (if you do) but I hope I've changed your mind on a seriously underrated character.

P.S. DeeJay is great too. In fact, the only one I don't like (from II) is Fei Long (fun to play, bad design (Allen Snider is a better, subtle allusion to Bruce Lee).

Anybody else actually want new, good characters? I feel like I'm the only one who didn't abandon the franchise after II/Alpha and thus doesn't have any nostalgia for the old cast?

If I want to play as Ryu or Sakura I can just pop in the respective game they were in (do I even have to mention the fantastic SSFIIT:HDR as my II fix?).

Hopefully the next game in the franchise will realize flipping your hand over while doing the peace sign doesn't count as counting to IV.

Additional characters would be easily implemented via a free patch like mentioned above. I don't even see how it would be an issue.

The new characters suck for the most part. Not necessarily to play as, but like FistfuOAwesome said, they are just poorly designed and don't feel like they belong with the rest of the cast. Rufus is easily the worst offender. His character design is absolutely horrible from top to bottom, and his move-set is just ridiculous.

I thought all the new characters were great. They may not fit anywhere in the story, but no one even mentions Seth as a new character. Fuerte is an absolute beast if you learn how to mix up his moves properly. Rufus, like stated before, is damn near top-tier and can pretty much stay on the attack the whole time and not get owned (looking at you, Ken scrubs). Abel is fantastic, as I've fought many great Abel's online now and can see why he is very difficult to fight/use. Seth, needless to say, is ridiculously overpowering, but C. Viper is definitely a letdown. Even when I have come across good C. Vipers (rarer than Gen) she was still pretty predictable and easily defeated.

I say give me new characters. If I have to pay I won't be happy, but I'll probably end up doing it anyway. It opens up the game though by adding more to do offline (Arcade, Trial, Achievements) and allows for a bit more strategy. Maybe we get Shin Akuma (let's face it, Akuma in IV has fallen far from the beast he was). Maybe we get Dee-Jay or T-Hawk. I never got great with either, so this would be a fresh start since IV is an entirely different game. I'd like to see the return of Guy or Rolento, but that's unlikely, so I'll settle for cop-outs like Evil Ryu, Shin Akuma, Shin M. Bison, Charlie, and Sean. The only character I'd really like to see return is Q, since we got nothing on him in 3 and it was just left open-ended. Q is entirely unique and would be an interesting addition both for gameplay and storyline. Here's looking at you, Q!

What FistfulOAwesome said.

Also: I love T. Hawk.

And on the subject of racism, which alongside Resident Evil 5, is something Capcom revels in:

They took OUT the PROUD WARRIOR and replaced him with a fucking Mexican stereotype CHEF. Because Capcom always goes to restaurants where Mexicans are their cooks and make their food. "Hey that brown guy back there making our tacos could be a character in SFIV!" ... "You're a genius, make it happen!"

Fuck you Capcom, fuck you for taking out one of my favorite characters.

Oh, and I'm neutral about Dee Jay. If it means getting T. Hawk, I'll take DJ.

Those who dislike parry obviously sucked at it. It was one of the best additions to the series ever.

And Seth is such a pushover, I laugh at you all for struggling to fight him. Go fight Gill and then tell me how overpowered Seth is. Seth is a little fast but also weak and predictable.

@Calamansi

Wrong. The problem with parries is that they cause the game to degenerate. There's no such thing as a viable ranged character in 3s. Every character wants to do the same thing in every match, with a few exceptions - get close and do combos. It's a fun game, but not strategically diverse.

Or use Necro's limbs for keepaway, or have any type of tick throw game, or ever use block damage to your advantage, or have 12's runaway game be effective...etc. Yes, that is what I mean.

I'm not saying that SFIV is a better game (I don't think it is), just that parries limit a lot of other strategies that make the game more interesting.

man, i love the game, but seriously, if the game remains like this for the rest of 2009, it's gonna drag real bad and the fan base could drop rapidly, which is why DLC is a great idea. i mean, if it's a capcom issue, they why did they add a touchy multiplayer system for DLC to RE5?
seriously, playing online matches for the next 7 months will drag if they don't do something. having DLC can open up possibilities for new players, and old-schoolers alike. They could have new achievements, stages, characters, and game modes. They could make a tag style game mode, like the vs. games. Personally, i would like it if they added like 10-15 characters, all bought individually. some people i wanna see are Charlie (they continue to have him included in SF4's story), Adon (made a brief appearance), i guess T. Hawk and Dee Jay, maybe Guy and Cody. i dunno, but Capcom should definitely think about doing this.
