No Assassin's Creed II demo planned photo

It appears as if Ubisoft won’t be rolling the dice for timid or curious consumers when it comes to Assassin’s Creed II. During a demo session of the game at Eurogamer Expo, Web site Connected Consoles (via Joystiq) obtained confirmation that the developer won’t be releasing a demo for the knife-happy sequel.

No explanation was recorded, so we’ve asked Ubisoft why a demo isn’t in the plans.

But this isn’t a new thing -- the first Assassin’s Creed didn’t have a demo either. In an interview with GameTrailers a billion years ago, AC producer Jade Raymond said the original title was too sandboxy and large for a demo.

“The game is a more sandbox-styled game where there's a lot [to do] and [there's] not [really] a linear mission for a demo," Raymond said, according to Gamer Node. Elaborating, she said "[the game is] huge, there's three cities and there's no way to say 'OK, we're going to cut up this square of the city and give that to you as a demo.' "

On the bright side, there is a workaround to this issue. Just pop in a copy of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and stand on the edge of a high ledge while pretending that Drake has knives and a wicked accent. There are plenty of those opportunities -- the ledge stuff, at least -- sprinkled throughout the game, we promise.

This is a BAD decision on Ubisoft's part. I played the first one and never finished it because I just plain lost interest. The game had a few interesting gameplay elements but after awhile I just kept asking myself "Now why am I doing this again?".

I certainly will NOT be buying AC2 without having played a demo first.

He acts like a demo for the first game was impossible. He says "'OK, we're going to cut up this square of the city and give that to you as a demo' " as if this was ridiculous. Uh, hey buddy, the cities in the actual game were cut up into squares with big memory walls blocking off other areas, and set missions were included in that spot.

Sounds like a fucking demo to me.

I expect a good demo would take some work, as you would have to funnel the player along set objectives that could be completed in a short time span (like the Infamous demo). Probably not worth the bother, since the game is going to sell like crazy anyways.

They've already made it pretty clear that the main problems with the first game have been addressed, and frankly, I doubt a short demo would sway the jaded people anyways.

Imagine if the first game had a demo. You wouldn't have been able to see the repetitive structure of AC1 from a 15-minute snip anyways, so how would it have benefited you? A good demo might have only pissed those people off MORE...

By the way, not saying they need a demo, I almost never play demos and I doubt AC2 needs one. Just saying his reasoning for not including one the first time was stupid.

That's cool, I feel like people have been practically fed on a silver spoon this generation with all the demo play.

Also,
Wow, that's a lot of avatarless trolls.

@Cadtalfryn. How are people being spoon fed? That analogy doesn't even apply to this. Demo's are so people can figure out whether to spend £50/$60 on a game. People aren't rich and if people are struggling with money they need all the research they want to get to be able to play as many games as possible.

I can understand in this case because of what type of game it is, but a lot of games need demo's IMO because it helps you know what type of game it is, what it looks like, what the dialogue, soundtrack and basic storyline is.

For example, I doubt I would have bought the Watchmen game without the demo, as it's another movie game, but because I played the demo, it really helped justify my purchase and it's now one of my favourite games.

Also, just because they have no avatars does not make them trolls.

Hm, that's a shame. I'll probably end up buying it anyways, but I would've perferred a chance to actually try the game out before I bought it, if just to see if they actually did improve on AC1 and address the issues that plagued it.

DEMO's are highly needed for us Belgians...

video-game-rentals have been outlawed here, so a demo is the only chance we have of testing a game without buying it!
