No April Fool: Silent Hill Wii, titled Shattered Memories photo

Well, I hope it's not an April Fool's Joke. There's a Nintendo Power cover to win you doubters over.

This Silent Hill game is not a remake or a port, but a re-imaging of the first game. Uh-oh. Maybe it's not so bad, though. GoNintendo has some quotes from the magazine, and from what we see here, things sound pretty interesting.

The characters play different roles, things don’t necessarily happen in the same order, and the story is taken in lots of new directions. You still play as Harry Mason, you’re still looking for your daughter, and you’ll see familiar elements, but they’re all twisted to betray your expectations.

The text goes on to say that you determine how the game unfolds with your actions. “In Silent Hill games, the town always gets inside the protagonist’s head,” says producer Tomm Hulett. “But now, it’s getting inside YOUR head.”

And it's a Wii game, so expect some Wii Remote action. It seems that the in-game puzzles will use some waggle, so you're "not just hitting buttons to choose things.”

Finally, for those who hate the locked doors in the Silent Hill games, it seems that they're done with that in this new game: “Longtime fans of the series will also be delighted to learn that there’s a way through every locked door; no more checking dozens of entrances only to find that 90% of them are permanently barred shut.”

I'm intrigued. And worried. One thing's for sure: it sure can't look worse than the original Silent Hill on PS1, can it?

Ergh. So who is making this? Should send it to Silicon Knights, they need something to bounce back with. And hey, they have experience with remaking Konami properties for Nintendo AND good horror games.

I don't understand the deal with the doors though. I mean, the reason it was like that is because they just wanted to have a "realistic" amount of doors, but there's no way you could or would want a relevant amount of content behind them all. So they either are just going to remove a lot of doors from the game, or there is going to be a lot of tedious door opening to find anything important...

I did here about this a week ago. I remember being playing the original silent hill in the dark. Silent Hill part 1 felt like a gta 3 game in some way. I'm alright with a wii remake as long as Fatal Frame wii game comes out here in the U.S.

Don't know if want. I love Silent Hill. But I don't know. I just want Team Silent to work on them. :(

I always thought a remake WOULD be cool to see though.

It seems as though Climax, maker of Silent Hill: Origins, is on coding duty for this one.

The new A Boy and His Blob game is a re-imagining. The core story and gameplay is identical to the original, but it's so much more. That game hasn't been released yet so we can't know for sure how different it will be, but I have a better example: Donkey Kong for the Game Boy. You play the four levels from the original arcade game then you are told that those were just tutorial levels and you have a hundred new levels to play, all with wildly different mechanics from the original arcade version.

So if they're faffing about about and "twisting it to betray your expectations", why the hell don't they just make a new Silent Hill title altogether for the system?
It's just a shameless plug at getting more sales.
"If we add elements of the story and characters from the original, I can finally retell the story of Silent Hill using my fan fiction as a guide!"

To digress a little, this is exactly why I don't want a FF7 remake. Crisis Core was OK and I enjoyed it to an extent, but it was full of unnecessary pretentious crap that kind of spoilt the origin back story for me.

I just hope I'm wrong and this is just a bad case of Nerd Rage.

My first post ;)

IŽll say just two things: The resident evil remake for gamecube and Eternal Darkness...
I have a Wii now and more games on it than on my PS3... sorry graphic whores, but the so called "next gen" failed to impress me...
Of course, the game can be a huge crap but Climax did a good job with Origins and they probably learned with Homecoming mistakes... so...
(I can imagine using the wiimote as the flashlight and listening the white noise from the controller little speakers...)

LOL @ all the haterade just because it's Nintendo. So predictable. Well, that's Destructoid for you. Take a bow, you guys.

Yeah, the game could suck. Origins sucked (even though it wasn't even on a Nintendo system, mind you). Or the game could rule. We don't know yet. To automatically dismiss it BECAUSE NINTENDO is retarded.

I think most people are dismissing it because it's another outsourced Silent Hill game... but that's fine if you want to be paranoid and overly defensive of your precious Wii.

@ Wedge- Quoteth Colette -"I really, really don't want to play Silent Hill on the Wii. I will anyway, but my gut instinct is NO. Not that that matters. :("

Im OK isn't off base.

It's weird though, because I know Colette is interested in Cursed Mountain and Fatal Frame IV; two Wii games that shares a lot in common with Silent Hill.

I can't speak for her, but I'm guessing that at this point, Colette and people like her love Silent Hill too much to risk it getting screwed up. So far, "serious", previously established 3D party franchises on the Wii haven't been all that they could be.

My guess is that if this Silent Hill "re-imagining" has minimum motion controls and looks like a high end GC or Xbox games, Silent Hill fans will approve. If it looks worse then Silent Hill 2, people will be pissed.

I thought Origins was great, kept the appeal, enemies and atmosphere that Silent Hill is known more, are people still so butthurt over the fact that yo could defend yourself? Cause that's just silly.

And this uhh, I don't know, could be cool, could be shit, I do think its odd to see this on the Wii.

I can't help but laugh when people say they don't want to play this version, and they don't want the original messed with. Yes, because making the game for the Wii will destroy the original PS1 version. Every copy of the game will immediately burst into flames.

I think this is a very good thing, if it's not fake. The original SH is ungodly hard to find at this point. I've never been into SH, but I want to start from the beginning and see if it helps me along.

if its not Team Silent, its not a real silent hill game. The game mechanics and stuff may appear similar, but the <design aesthetics> are all wrong. also, silicon knights needs to be put out of their misery, I hope they never touch another konami franchise again.

I am not mad that they are making a Silent Hill game for a Nintendo console, for the first time ever.I just wish it wasnt a remake of the original.Honestly,I have been hoping for a full on updated remake of the first SH since I finished SH2,and I always hoped it would do justice to the original game. You know, high def, incredible graphics, extremely disturbing new enemies and more of the town to explore. But this.......just seems like a waste. Its on the Wii,so impressive graphics are already out of the question. Then add in some gimmicky motion controls and BLAM!The Silent Hill series has officially been raped to death. But I will try to keep an open mind on this one,its just fairly disappointing.

One thing's for sure: it sure can't look worse than the original Silent Hill on PS1, can it?

The original game is the best looking one. The more power the SH devs got aholed of, the less scary their games got. SH1 scared the piss out of me because everything was so indistinct; your imagination could really run away with itself and dream up things far more terrible and horrible than anything they could actually display graphically. Once they got PS2 hardware and just showed you shit, it wasn't even slightly frightening anymore. And SH3 and 4 just managed to look gross.

In my fantasy dream land, this game will have the -exact- same graphic engine as the original PS1 Silent Hill.

@T9X: The Wii has some serious processing power under it's hood, as we've seen with games like Brawl and Mario Galaxy. Just because it's not HIGHDEF doesn't mean the graphics can't look damn good. That's all on the developers.

I'm really bothered by people who don't understand how powerful the Wii really is. It's more than twice as powerful as the Gamecube, and that shit was fan-fucking-tastic. If graphics never progressed past what the Gamecube could do, I'd have been a happy camper for all of eternity, because that shit was truly amazing.

I agree with Gen Eric. People joke about the Wii being two GameCubes duct-taped together, but that's not exactly a small amount of power. Look at RE4 and the like. That game still looks better than any of the early- to mid-release 360 games. Developers just need to stop making crap for it.

Removing combat brought a smile upon my face. I love the series, but beating the crap out of an ungodly being from hell always felt a little retarded. Specially when you're doing it with a pipe. It's like a plumber could solve a whole scenario of Lucifer minions' breakout. Not that plumbers can't do their sh**, we've seen it. But seriously, I like the flashlight thing. Your only weapon is running away and while you're doing it the only source of light you'll have will eventually make a visual mess in front of you, leaving the player just as disorientated as a normal person with a flashlight and a demon on his tail would be. Let it be good.
