No accounting for taste: Max Payne takes number one spot at weekend box office photo

Perhaps if America had read our review of the Max Payne film, this wouldn't have happened.

Reuters is reporting that the film adaptation of Max Payne, starring Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis, topped the North American box office this weekend. Raking in $18 million during its opening weekend, Max Payne overtook Disney's brilliant Beverly Hills Chihuahua at No. 2 and The Secret Life of Bees at No. 3. Oliver Stone's George W. Bush biopic W debut this week at No. 4, bringing in a decent $10.6 million, but falling short of expectations.

So what were you guys seeing this weekend? Was our dismal review of Max Payne enough to scare you away from the sticky floors of your local theater? I have to be honest, despite rotten reviews across the board (particularly from gamers), I'm still interested in checking out Max Payne ... for the same reason I slow down to see a fender bender. Or a horrific motorcycle accident.

... actually, this is the first time I've ever even heard of a Max Payne film past rumors. And yet people can actually go WATCH IT now?

I've really got to check Destructoid more.

I need to install the original game again to wash away the bad taste the movie left me with.

The series needs an Incredible Hulk-style do over. And by that, I mean let's forget the first one ever happened...

We went to check out Igor. Some things were spot on perfect like John Cleese as a mad scientist, Steve Buscemi as a suicidal immortal bunny and Sean Hayes as the world's first metro secual brain in a jar. But the rest was pretty "meh"
At least the art direction was pretty cool.

I won't lie I want to see this movie because I know it sucks. That and I want to know what it is about, the trailers don't explain much of anything.

A funny Max Payne sidenote: On last night's Entourage, you can see the movie playing in the background on the TV in Ari's office.
Haven't seent the movie, but recognized Mark Walberg.

Don't get excited people...last week it was Beverly Hills Chihuahua...and Max Payne didn't touch its first week totals...yeah no taste out there at all. *

@Nick, it's a cute movie but it's not Pixar. I'd say unless your lady wants to check it out save your cash and rent it.
It DOES have it's moments, like when blind orphans preform choreography to "I Can See Clearly Now" but that makes it sound funnier than I felt it was.
Still, if you're a whore for animation than this might be worth the price of admission, the style is awesome but feels very derivative of Corpse Bride at times. ...and, to be brutally honest, some voice acting just outright blows.

I was at the movies this weekend, but I was not wasting my time with Max Payne. I was watching Bill Maher's "Religulous," which did NOT help matters in regard to the bitterness in my heart over the "LittleBigPlanet" recall situation.

I was at a theater watching Sexdrive. It was very good, but not quite as good as Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist.

@Mr Gilder: Religulous is awesome.

The question is, unrelated to the Max Payne name, is it good?

Read the dtoid review. Saw it anyways. Bad for the Max Payne name. Bad for a movie in itself. Sometimes the public just wants bad.

It was terrible. There is only one man who should have been able to make this film - Michael Bay. He knows the bullet times.

Even at number 1, $18 mil is not that great of a number for an opening weekend. Should put to rest any sequel that was a possibility, so that's a good thing. October is usually a dumping ground for bad movies, to make way for the release of the Oscar-worthy movies in November and December.

At least Beverly Hills Chihuahua is not the #1 movie at the box office anymore. We can celebrate that.

I rarely go to the theater anymore on an account of movies being really expensive. I can't say I'm surprised since Beverly Hills Chihuahua was number one for what, three weeks?

People have poor taste.

I stayed far away after hearing about how many gun fights were in it, or how few I should say. Considering the game was one spectacular gun fight after the next... *sigh*

That and it was PG-13 to top it all off. No thanks. Let the kiddies have their fun I guess. Tired of going to PG-13 suck fest game movies. If a movie about a video game is going to suck, as they always do, the least they could do is kill some shit. Since, you know, that is the entire game really. And I loved every second of it >:-D

Nick, what's up with all the editors using two colors for the image caption text? You all started doing it weeks ago.
