NIS America says that the PS2 couldn't run Disgaea 3 photo

When we first showed you screenshots of Disgaea 3, some Destructoid readers attacked them hard enough to rack up the six-digit plus damage numbers the series is known for. While everyone is looking forward to a next-gen Disgaea, some are not pleased with the last-gen graphics shown in these screenshots.

NIS America comes to the game's defense, saying that the PS2 lacks the processing power and memory run Disgaea 3.

"PS2 could not load the same amount of data on to memory and process it like the PS3; therefore, we decided to develop it for the next-gen platform," says Jack Niida of NIS.

If you look at the screenshots, the backgrounds are of a higher resolution. Those and the character pictures and menus are fine. Series fans are more concerned with the character sprites themselves; they look about the same as they did on the PS2. Nida explains: "The character sprites for Disgaea 3 take 3 to 4 times the amount of labor to create compared to Disgaea 2."

Are they too busy for Disgaea 3

I don't really think that these character sprites are going to dissuade any series fan from picking up Disgaea 3. The question is: do you think that potential new fans would be turned off by the graphics? Do graphics even really matter that much for a strategy title like Disgaea?

I hardly think they need to adopt the unreal engine for fans of this game or staregy to pick it up.

Alright, I love sprite-based artwork, but honestly, there's no excuse for such low-res artwork on PS3. Hell, they already looked dated on PS2, especially once games like Odin Sphere came out.

I love the look, but I've never played the first two.

Ok, I'll settle with the PS2ish graphics here, but that disc better be full to the brim with content if they're going to be settling with last gen sprites. Call me selfish, but from a next gen Disgaea, I want tons of classes, tons of maps, and tons of bonus dungeons.

You know I'm still going to buy a PS3 for this damn game regardless...

Yeah, I'll play it regardless of the graphics. However, those low-res sprites are shameful. They really need to at least make the sprites a higher resolution. Come on, it's the PS3 for crying out loud!

I think that prinny sprite in the lower left is the exact same prinny sprite they've been using since Disgaea 1 >.>

Sigh. Complete BS. They look exactly like the same sprites used in previous Disgaea games. If this game isn't priced as a budget title, I doubt it will sell that many copies in the US.

My thoughts exactly! I love Disgaea as much as the next fan. Is the PS3 not enough to handle higher resolution sprites? :S

Only thing I can think of is that if they use extreme sprite animation (something that was used in Odin's Sphere [GREAT GAME BTW! MUST HAVE FOR RPGFANS!), Then yes, it is true.

Odin's Sphere had major lag times when it came to final boss battles with so much sprite animations going on at once. Shit, I played it even on the PS3 and yes it ranned allot smoother, and the graphics were insanely beautiful, but when I battle the Undead Queen bitch or the Giant Final Dragon, it had small lag times.

So if this is the case with Disgaea 3, then what they say its true.

The sprites are not in HD glory. C'mon.. I am sure fans won't care but it is a bit lazy on their side if this screenshot is the real deal. (I am not a follower)

@Emrah, forget HD, they aren't even High-res sprites like the ones used in Odin Sphere and Guilty Gear.

....who cares? Disgaea hasn't had top end graphics since....EVER
It's all about the story and the endless leveling.
The game could have atari graphics and it wouldn't matter as long as there is a ton of classes, items, levels, skills, spells, and disproportionate weapons.

Oh yeah, and it better make me laugh. Graphics whores need not apply. NIS doesn't care, and neither do we.

@Syn, graphic whores? Asking for 3d, normal mapped, pixel shader 3.0, 4xAA with radial lighting, HDR, and motion blur in Disgaea 3 is being a graphics whore. Asking for higher res sprites isn't. Also, you are right about Disgaea never being about graphics. It never was. However, you cannot deny that the guy's comments about 3-4 times more work comical.

@Jackdoe I'm sure if they could have gotten away with putting it on the ps2, they would have due to sheer production costs on the ps3.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwgxstWwx2k <-- a promo vid for the game, regardless of the quality of the sprites. It will sell to the ppl its targeted too, Juts like halo 3 Just like the new smash bros. And every other game out there.

The complaint isn't about the graphics not improving a ton, but the fact that if it was on PS2, you wouldn't need a PS3 to play it. Because it IS total BS that this needs a PS3 to run. They were never even coming close to what the PS2 could do on all their earlier games.

Thats nice that its going to be on ps3 and all but I am still not going to buy a ps3 just beacue it cant be on the ps2. I guess I wait till 2010 till I get that game cause that is most likely when i will buy a ps3 for this and a few other games

Well we can't be so sure to say that it could run on a PS2... Odin sphere for instance had better sprites but the game lagged horribly at certain points; and those points were too much for the PS2 to handle; in a way you could say that Odin sphere went just beyond the PS2's limits and the only way to correct for such would be to run the game on a more powerful System (PS3)...

Now, from what i am guessing is that NIS maybe telling the truth about not being able to run it on the PS2 as with the PS2 their could be scenes that Lag horribly... The screenshots of the game do show us that the game is made in HD, which means that they may be using higher res sprites....

Where NIS FAILS however, is that the "high res" sprites are really just upscaled from lower res sprites... meaning they larger Size and take more system power to process during the game, BUT they are not better quality

So it could be true that they could not run the game on a PS2 since they built for HD, however they are horribly lazy for not taking the time to make the sprites in the resolution that they were going to use and just made low-res sprites that they upscale. They probably wanted to cut back on their time by re-using many of the old sprites and made the new sprites low res to match the old sprites they were reusing... The "3-4 times more labor" comment could be half-true... is false in that it has nothing to do witch the image quality of the spites, but it may be true in that they may have increased the number of frames they use for each sprite animation, which makes things smoother

NIS should learn from Odin Sphere... The game that pushed the boundaries for 2D sprites. It Odin Sphere actually looks and animates smoother on the PS3 thanks to it pushing the PS2 to the limit (Certain Boss battles that slowed to a standstill are now silky smooth!)

I understand they have hundreds and hundreds of characters that need individual sprites but its no excuse to look PS1.

I'm probably gonna get it though...

Best luck for Disgaea 4 huh?

Total BS.

I swear, once game systems got 24-bit color, everyone forgot how to optimize graphics. When I do art, I still hand-pick palette colors and save them in indexed color mode -- then use PNGOUT on them. People ask me why my images are a quarter the size or less than all the idiots saving truecolor PNGs or JPEGing their images to death.

Not total BS.

1. Didn't NIS say they made this on PS3 to get a hang of the console.
2. Shader models. This version supposedly uses pretty awesome attack effects, Shader models are completely Dependant on the graphics card, the PS2 is puny, obviously, the PS3 isn't.
3. You guys obviously didn't use the Tera skills in Disgaea 2, The sprites on those were easily amongst the best I've seen,
4. If Disgaea had the same graphics engine as Unreal Tournament 3, the gameplay would suffer. I'd rather have a game worth playing, instead of a game to look at and not play.

take 3 to 4 times the amount of labor to create compared to Disgaea 2

i'm hoping that meant they added more frames of animation, seeing as the resolution of the sprites look roughly the same
