Nirvana is no fan of Guitar Hero 5's Kurt Cobain photo

It's not just Kurt Cobain's non-murdering wife who hates what Activision has done to Kurt Cobain in Guitar Hero 5. Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, former members of Nirvana, have issued a statement criticizing Activision's use of the dead musician, stating that they believe he deserves better.

"We want people to know that we are dismayed and very disappointed in the way a facsimile of Kurt is used in the Guitar Hero game," states the bassist and drummer. "While we were aware of Kurt's image being used with two Nirvana songs, we didn't know players have the ability to unlock the character. This feature allows the character to be used with any kind of song the player wants. We urge Activision to do the right thing in 're-locking' Kurt's character so that this won't continue in the future.

"It's hard to watch an image of Kurt pantomiming other artists' music alongside cartoon characters. Kurt Cobain wrote songs that hold a lot of meaning to people all over the world. We feel he deserves better."

Aw, come on. It's not like Kurt himself can get offended by it.

Its good to see them say something about it. I'm not a huge fan, but I know this really doesn't jive with what Kurt/Nirvana was about.

Not a big fan of reanimating the dead to dance to other people's music.

This is a very grave situation. I'm sure they are dead tired of all this guitar hero bullshit. I just wish all the discussion would croak. The plot of the game has no room for him, and there is no way activision can RIPent for this. o well, at least gaming sites and the news won't beat this story to death.

I think it's wrong. I agree with Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl and yes ... even Courtney Love on this one. Let the guy rest in peace. Don't make a mockery of him in death by using his likeness to perform in a way that Kurt never would have in real life. It's one thing for his character to sing Nirvana songs -- that's cool with me, but using him as an unlockable character? That just seems wrong. I was a big fan of Nirvana growing up, and it kind of bums me out to see this.

You know what? I'm no big Cobain fan, but I see where they're coming from. When it's someone who's dead and can't speak for themselves, the best solution is to have their character only appear for their songs. Also, I have to admit that I lol'ed at the header pic.

Well he sold his image they have the rights so this is what happens. It doesn't matter about what the issue is and I don't care if they decided to put him in a tutu and dance around candyland singing "Its raining men". It doesn't matter who he is or what he has done if they have rights to his image they have rights to his image. Either buy it back or quite whining.
(I'm not up to date on this issue so if they did not actually have the rights to his image then please disregard this)

On another note I find a lot of musician (not Kurt specifically)to be bs because they talk all the crap about sticking it to the man, hope, love, dreams for a better world but uh oh! They singed a contract with people that don't give a damn about what they say just that it sells. If I ever was offered piles of money for anything I produced I would require my consent with any and all things it is used for. I may never make it "big" because of that but thats just how I roll.

Who ever signed the contract needs a good kick in the head. I suggest they invest in a helmet. At least next time they'll have enough money to get someone to do some hugging research before they sign on the dotted line.

I guess we won't be seeing a Guitar hero: Nirvana or Foo Fighters any time soon.

Word.

Seriously I think it's pretty fuckin' cool and I don't really like Nirvana or Cobain but when I saw Kurt and the band come out for Smells Like Teen Spirit I got a bit excited.

Cobain's face is on something cool and successful for the first time in forever that isn't glamorizing his suicide (excuse me, murder). It's a fun track to play, the first fun GH in years, and a decent song to boot. C'mon! How is this negative in anyway!?

What about Hendrix and Cash? Nobody is freaking out there and they should be way bigger deals than this. The only reason people are in a tizzy is because Courtney blew this thing (haha, puns) and because of that everyone will whine and Courtney will use their collective groans to continue her Bitchfest '09.

I would trust the words of Dave and Krist any day over that of the cracked out crack whore Courtney Love. I can understand there arguments, because some of the stuff that in GH 5 are probably songs that Kurt would never play-due to his whole anti-established and anti-mainstream ideals. I just hope Activision treats his character with respect that's all.

As a huge Grateful Dead fan, I support Forest Green Lantern's motion to put Jerry Garcia in a video game. I'm also a Nirvana fan and I don't see the issue here. I guess that means I have "absolutely no idea what the situation is about" and I "should be taken off earth or put in a garbage disposal head first." Yeah.

Also, nobody is freaking out about John Lennon in The Beatles. Is it really just because there is a possibility that Kurt will be seen singing something other than a Nirvana song? Or is it because Nirvana fans (including Grohl, Novoselic and Love) are generally anti-establishment reactionary fucktards?

I find it disrespectful to his memory.. I don't want to see Kurt rappin' or whatever. Now, if he had gotten the money for it when he was alive, and if he had allowed his image jumping around with cartoon avatars singing some other shit, and if he had died after the game was published, I wouldn't be against it, or demand it to be patched somehow. But the situation is different here, he has no say in this matter, and he is put in a different light.

I think that because of the anti-establishment nature of Kurt Cobain's music, art, and general rock mythos - yes, Activision should leave well enough alone. It's not like Jerry Garcia was all "fuck "the man" " in just about every lyric he put to paper, nor was Jimi Hendrix, nor was anybody else that I'm aware that GH has in the game.

But, to be fair, I know rather little about it, because I refuse to play general rehash bullshit titles. Especially ones with dead rock stars that would have rather stayed dead if they had the choice...a choice which he already made for himself, I might add.

Oh, and to the guy who chose to quote "Rape Me" in his comment...nice one. Way to sound like someone who doesn't know better. I mean, I know I come off as ignorant on a regular basis, I'm sure, but that's a whole different level of foot-in-mouth.

Alas I agree having legendary musicians in game is pretty cool. I was upset with Hendrix mainly because it was a shitty game and also because I hadn't really opened up to the idea then.

I like Cobain in the game. In fact I almost like him moreso because of the game. It's a fun ass game whereas Cobain wasn't the funnest tool in the box. The game makes him look much happier than he was. :P Much like how The Beatles: Rock Band glamorizes their history but it's for the better.

I don't get it, if you are so worried about maintaining his "image" why the fuck did you let his likeness be used in a video game to begin with? You can't do that and then bitch that him singing other peoples songs is disrespectful to his image. So if you go by that logic, putting him in the video game in the first place would be disrespectful to his image.
